Flag Desecration Not Allowed In SFO?

Fri Feb 09, 2007 6:30 am

Interesting read, would love to hear opinions.

- This story starts with an "anti-terrorism rally" held last October on campus by the College Republicans. To emphasize their point, students stomped on Hezbollah and Hamas flags.

In November, the Associated Students board passed a unanimous resolution, which the (X)Press reported, denounced the California Republicans for "hateful religious intolerance" and criticized those who "pre-meditated the stomping of the flags knowing it would offend some people and possibly incite violence."

The university's response? Spokesperson Ellen Griffin told me, "The university stands behind this process."

And: "I don't believe the complaint is about the desecration of the flag. I believe that the complaint is the desecration of Allah." -

Except that Hezbollah and Hamas are both linked to terrorism, and arent legitimate states so I sont really see what the problem is. I dont think its right to stomp on any flag but the Nazi flag, but this isnt like burning the Norwegian flag or anything like that. And its not like Hamas and Hezbollah dont take every chance they get to burn our flag.

Cheers,
Kyle

I would have to agree if it is the "desecration of Allah" then the actions of the students was showing an intolerance of others and could have incited a riot. How many of us would approve the desecration of symbols of the Roman Catholic or Jewish faiths? So in the end the Associated Students board of San Francisco State (not the local government of San Francisco therefore the topic title is misleading) passed a resolution denouncing the actions of a few. No harm came to the students education career. Time for everyone to move on.

Hezbollah has a flag?

Who knew?

Where does a college Republican get a hold of one of those?

And if they wanna make a point, why don't they join the military and fight against Islamic loons, instead of burning a flag outside some Haight Ashbury coffee shop? How 1968 is that? It's even worse than those smarmy brats who descend on DC every few years in their designer shabby chic and lip piercings and protest against the World Bank.

Seriously, these people are no better than those beards out in Kabul or Teheran who burn an American flag every chance they get.

Well said!

This is my Alma Mater. I wonder if these college Republicans even attend SFSU. When I went there, there was no such animal. I doubt there population is over 10.
There sole purpose we to agitate the large Palestinian student population at that school. Most just go about there business getting there education. No US flag burning or Israeli flag burning going on at all. These brats need to take there areses back to USC or where ever the hell they come from.

If the flags of Hezbollah and Hamas are religious symbols, is Islam the religion of peace some say it is? If the students did do this in opposition to Islam, then they were doing wrong by insulting another religion. The article says "anti-terrorism rally" though, so burning symbols of terrorist organizations would be expected. American flags are burned at anti-war rallies, so why can't flags of terrorist organizations be burned at anti-terrorism rallies?

I agree.

People should be allowed to burn flags, bras, their hair.

People should also be allowed to burn people wrapped in flags.

That's one greenhouse gas effect I can live with.

I attended San Francisco State University for 4 years and have never seen a ANY flags being burned of ANY kind.
I've been living here in San Francisco for almost 12 years and have gone to many peace rallys and have NEVER seen a US flag burned.
Yet if you watch Fox news, they show liberals burning flags all the time.

Lets stop for a minute and think now. Islam is 1,400 years old. Hezbollah/Hamas are both less than 50 years ago. Tell me, does it seem possible that the flags of these two organizations are symbols of Islam? Stop trying to pick at every little thing you read.

The flags are not symbols, they have Islamic symbols on them - namely the name of Allah, which is not something a Muslim would want to see someone step on, and in the case of the Hamas flag, there is the shahada - the proclamation that there is no God but God, and Mohammed is messenger - again, very holy to Muslims, and not something we would like to see someone step on.

If they want to have an anti-terrorism rally, its up to them, but when it comes to flags which have religious symbols on them, no matter who they belong to, you are bound to stir up trouble and piss people off.

That's interesting, thank you for the point.

I wonder though, why aren't many moslems outraged when these groups commit acts which kill people while flying the flags with Allah's name on it?

I think I might know. Smile

Hey, if AS wanted to pass a resolution denouncing it, they can do it all they want. They didn't say they couldn't do it.

Bra burning would be though. Especially if they remove it at the rally.

They actually dominate the vast majority of the state (when looking at it geographically). The reason our state always goes to the Democrats is because of San Diego, LA, and San Fransisco. Huge democratic populations in the big cities. When you look at the red/blue maps on election day, if you see a California one broken down by districts, a huge portion of the state is red(repubicans correct?) while relatively small areas around the big cities are blue.

Yep, the part where hardly anyone lives or wants to live tends to be Republican
The reason our state always goes to the Democrats is because most of the voters favor the Democratic candidates.
