"Vagina" - An Offensive Word?

Sat Feb 10, 2007 4:37 am

Another case of a ridiculous complaint triggering a change to suit the complainer:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6347649.stm

Fair use excerpt:

Quote:
the woman said she was "offended" when her niece asked her what a vagina was.

Sounds to me like this woman just needs to get her head out of the clouds and learn how to talk to her niece.

"Vagina isn't an offensive word -- it's a medical term you'd find in a text book.

Using 'HooHaa' is a bit less obvious regarding the meaning, but to use slang terminology in place of a proper term sounds a bit backwards to me.

Anyway, this kid was gonna ask the question someday. The aunt was unprepared to answer it and that's her own fault. RUFF!"

You've got to be kidding me?

What gets me is one woman who needs to really loosen up, complains-and they change the name of the play?

Unfortunately, this is also part of the wussification of America. One complaint, and people jump through hoops trying to soothe the complainer, instead of telling them to shove it, and just go on with the show.

And of course that word is offensive, especially in the Bible Belt, where they don't believe in being honest about sexuality to begin with.

That as far as I know is a medical term and I don't see how someone would be offended by that. There are a lot worse words out there to describe the female lower parts. I say she should get a life

To be fair, there's always been a puritanical streak when it comes to language in America. That's why tits (birds, by the way) were re-named chickadees, and the British "titbit" was changed to the American "tidbit".

Odd, but there you go.

beaver

Wynona's got herself a big brown beaver
and she shows it off to all her friends.
One day, you know, that beaver tried to leave her,
So she caged him up with cyclone fence.

Along came Lou with the old baboon
And said "Recognize that smell?"
"Smells like seven layers,
That beaver eats Taco Bell."

Now Rex he was a Texan out of New Orleans
And he travelled with the carnival shows.
He ran bumper cars, sucked cheap cigars
And he candied up his nose.

He got wind of the big brown beaver
So he though he'd take himself a peek,
But the beaver was quick
And grabbed him by the kiwis.
Now he ain't pissed for a week.
(And a half!)

Now Wynona took her big brown beaver,
And she stuck him up in the air.
Said "I sure do love this big brown beaver
And I wish I did have a pair."

Now the beaver onces slept for seven days
And it gave us all an awful fright.
So I tickled his chin and I gave him a pinch
And the bastard tried to bite me.

Wynona loved her big brown beaver
And she stroked him all the time.
She pricked her finger one day and it
Occurred to her she might have a porcupine

So this woman will explain the facts of life to her daughter and use the medically correct and p.c. terms "hoo haa"? What else? "Winky"?

I can see it now (fast forward with me, please)..."now honey, the man places his winky in the woman's hoo haa and they make nice nice so 9 months later a baby comes out of her tummy."

My parents hated "baby talk." Even in the early 1960's, they refused to use euphemisms of all types, even in public. Their teachings rubbed off... I hate terms like "passed away" instead of the saying the real word...DEAD. That's an example.

People who are this insecure about sexuality probably don't walk down the condom aisle at CVS. If they're behind the counter, she'll probably take her to Walgreen's instead. Unfortunately, my parents were incredibly repressed about sex, which, ironically, is probably why I'm so blatantly open about it. Even to a fault.

You obviously haven't seen the Vagina Monologues. When it was on here in Johannesburg there was an excerpt on TV and there is a section in the play dedicated to that word. The speaker bemoans the vilification of the C word and encourages its use.

As a woman I don't give a damn what people call my body parts. Vagine/Cunt/Pussy are all the same to me. BUT if I am called 'a cunt' that's difference. Like calling one of you guys 'a prick'. It's an insult but nowadays it's become fairly meaningless, like using the word 'fuck' as an adjective, adverb, or noun. Just the way that a person with a limited vocabulary makes up for not being able to find a more aposite alternative

I saw this on video, and I have to confess I would never force any man I cared about to sit through it. Call me a heretic--I don't care. The whole production just struck me as something that emerged from WAY too much time spent in therapy.

That said, Texan, if you *REALLY* want to get out of going, refer to the play as a 75-minute queeve.

I'm sure the word "pussy" would be less offensive..  sarcastic
