Favourite Bands?

Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:43 am

I'm just looking to survey the favourite Bands of some of the other users of a.net, just to get to know you guys better and to get a few more ideas to enlarge my (and yours) media libraries  Smile

Leave some info on your favourite bands, singers, etc, or leave a link to their official site. Wink

My Favourite Band is Chicago! Many of you older users will probably know about them. They started in 1967 and are still releasing albums, though less than before; they have released over 30 albums in 40 years! They are a very good band playing a variety of music. Mostly Rock Ballads, Jazz and some random other stuff! Most of their music incorporates a small yet powerful horn section.

Best songs:
Feelin' Stonger Every Day
25 or 6 to 4
Questions 67 & 68
Make Me Smile
Dialogue (Parts 1 & 2)
Old Days

I mainly like Symphonic/Goth metal music at the moment, don't knock it till you have tried it, but depending on my mood I will go from that, to opera or classical music.

After Forever
Apocalyptica
Chris de Burgh
Darkwell
Edenbridge
Epica
Evanescence
FlyLeaf
Iron Maiden
Kamelot
Lacuna Coil
Leaves Eyes
Metallica
Nickelback
Nightwish
Pink Floyd
REM
Rhapsody
Sins of Thy Beloved
Sirenia
Sonata Arctica
Stratovarious
Susperia
Theatre of Tragedy
Therion
Trail of Tears
Tristania
Within Temptation

Afraid I don't have al of the websites to hand currently as I'm not on my own laptop. I can suggest using YouTube to search for examples of the bands music, most of it seems to have escaped the recent binge of pulls recently.

Queen
H.I.M
Evanescance (Can never spell it...)
Green Day
Blink 182
Bowling for Soup
Feeder
Iron Maiden
My Chemical Romance
Rammstein
Tenacious D
The Who

Quite a mix, although my music library is pretty varied too. I've got Dido, Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärtze, Juli, Hawthorne Heights. I'll listen to pretty much anything, but I hate rap, r'n'b, classical and jazz.

Edit: Oh, and obviously my own  Silly *Warning: selfpug alert  Silly* My Band....Yeah, It's a shameful selfplug!!

Tristania's Illumination sound better each time I hear it. I'm really starting to like it.
Therion's Gothic Kaballah on the other hand seems rather dull. The very american female voice doesn't help either... I prefer listening to Sirius B and Lemuria...

Wow! Lots of metal dudes on this forum! Excellent!

I basically like most of what Thom@s and NASCARAirforce already said. My absolute favorite is and will always be King Diamond, as well as his other band Mercyful Fate. Another old favorites are

Manilla Road
Savatage
My Dying Bride
Candlemass
Solitude Aeturnus
Old Tiamat (Wildhoney and before...)
Therion
Symphony X

Things I've been listening to recently:

Nocturnal Rites
Mystic Prophecy
Agalloch
Evergray (even though the last one was a bit subpar)
Savage Circus

Yeah but they don't have Liv Kristine anymore. I am not too crazy about the new singer. I forgot what that electronic album was called but it was terrible, and actually Liv Kristine was on it. The videos on youtube are pretty cheezy for that album too. I picked it up hoping it would be as good as the first couple only to hear the male singer sounding like a buffoon when he sang and the music to be as far from metal as possible.

Old Tiamat (Wildhoney and before...)

You are talking about the days of "Sumerian Cry" and stuff? I lost interest in Tiamat around 1997 when they got all slow and not very metal.

There are a couple great bands from Greece too:

Rotting Christ
Septic Flesh...

Other bands I forgot to mention:

Atheist
Aghora
Morbid Angel
Death
Obituary
Thought Industry
Voivod
Depeche Mode (yeah this is a little different, though a lot of their songs have been covered by bands I like)
Atomic Opera
Testament
Emperor
Enslaved
3rd and the Mortal
The Gathering
Satyricon

There were at least two electronic albums... the first was Musique, a few catchy tunes, but it just wasn't ToT...
The new singer sounded quite good to my ears, but not as good as Liv Kristine on Velvet darkness and Aegis. The male vocal still needs some work on Storm, but at least it isn't as bad as the electronic albums. (If only he could give up the "queens english" accent, and growl a bit more...)

I forgot what the name of the album I have, but it has the song "Machine" and "Image" on it. I liked like maybe one song on the album, I sort of like "Machiine" at least where Liv sings. Yeah the Queens English in his singing makes them sound like they are trying to be some 80's British new wave one hit wonder band. Velvet Darkness was by far their best album.

ToT album releases are:
Theatre of Tragedy (1995)
Velvet darkness they fear (1996)
Aegis (1998)
Musiquie (2000)
Machine (CD single 2001)
Assembly (2002)
Storm (2006)

The 3 first are great, Musique was a turn in the wrong direction, Assembly I never heard, and Storm was good.

I have Velvet, Aegis and Assembly (I think Assembly was the crap album, I forgot what I did with it).

Velvet is by far their best. Still singing with the growl, and Liv was great.

Aegis - Liv probably singing at her best, but the male singer strayed away from the growl to more gothic vocals, but at least not that "British queer" voice he has on Assembly.

I only heard one song from the first TOT, it was on a Beauty in Darkness compilation

If you like VDtF, they you should really try the first one. I think you'll love that too.

When did that come out? Around 1995? I have never seen it at music stores and I wonder how hard it would be to find it these days. Probably have to go to amazon.

"A Hamlet for a Slothful Vassal" was the song that they had from that album on my Beauty in Darkness compilation.

There was a band similar to Theater of Tragedy back in the 1990s with the growling male voice and angelic female vocals that I get mixed up with them. I even have a couple of CDs of theirs in my storage unit, just forgot the name of the band at the moment, but they did a cover of Rush's "Witch Hunt"

It was indeed 1995

(the review is a bit less negative compared to my opinion of the album though...)

The Sins Of Thy Beloved or Tristania?

Neither of those. Isn't Tristania much newer like 2002/03 and later? I have a couple Tristania CDs I listen to a lot, and the band I am thinking of is nowhere near as talented.

I often get Tristania and Sirenia mixed up. I have actual Tristania Cds, while the music I have from Sirenia is downloaded.

First Tristania CD (Widow's Weeds) came out in 1998 (same for The Sins Of Thy Beloved).

Therion have had "beauty and the beast" vocals for some time (Theli, maybe their best album so far, came out in 1997). But I don't think it's them you are referring to, as they are bloody talented!  Smile

BTW, I feel a little bit bad for hijacking this thread with metal talk (even though I'm really enjoying it!). Shall we move the conversation to a dedicated metal thread?

Same guy that started both bands...  Smile Morten Veland. Split with Tristania after the 2nd album, Beyond the veil, due to different interests. Founded Sirenia, and produced a fantastic debut album, At sixes and sevens. Still Sirenias best album in my mind.
