Nascar Season Begins . . .

Sun Feb 11, 2007 12:29 pm

With Tony "SMOKE" Stewart winning the Budweiser Shootout!

Damn fine way to startthe year Smoke.

And of course, Kasey Kahne manages to crash with 1/4 mile to go . . . something about Kahne and walls at race tracks. . . .

Yeup, already been fun dealing with the traffic here in Daytona today. And it only gets worse as Sunday gets closer. Oh well. Great for the local economy, so I won't complain too much. Just a shame I don't get to enjoy the race because I'll either be A) working (fundraising) or B) in my dorm room, which means I'll pretty much get to watch the race like most other Americans: on my television set....minus the few hundred feet of track in Turns 1 and 2 that I can see into from my dorm.  Smile

Yeah, but the free surround-sound from simply opening up the dorm windows will make up for it. I know all about it..I had to do it for three years. Big grin

(By the way, you mean Turns 3 and 4. Turns 1 and 2 are on the opposite side.  Wink )

Glad to see Tony win...one of my favorite drivers, especially because he is so proficient in many racing venues, not just NASCAR. Thought it was a pretty good race even considering some of the mismoves and mishaps. Would ordinarily be down there helping setup for the IROC, but IROC is on hiatus because of Crown Royal comitting all their loons to NASCAR. For those of you who make it to Daytona, have a blast. I'll miss it. Regards...jack

No, I do mean Turns 1 and 2. Turns 3 and 4 are closest to the school, but you can't see the track because those turns slope away from the school. Turns 1 and 2 slope towards the school and you can see into them, and you can actually see the track and the cars racing on it.  Smile

I will be at Daytona sunday, but not at the race because it is too much to get in. I will be with my camera along side Runway 25R (at least hoping they use it instead of 7L) at DAB getting the hundreds of the planes coming in.

Send me a PM with what time(s) you'll be in town. I'll certainly be watching the race on tv but otherwise I shouldn't have anything planned on Sunday, other than hanging around my dorm room catching up on homework. Won't be driving anywhere because traffic will be a zoo (okay, that's an understatement). But I'd be interested in meeting up either to shoot some photosgo grab something to eat (or both) at one of the numerous restaurants along International Speedway Blvd.

I'm ex Riddle, so I think they will still let me in the lot there since I have I.D. I will be coming in from Orlando, so I am going to try to find some back ways into town to avoid the brunt of the traffic. I will be attempting to get to DAB early.

If this is your first year at Riddle and you are in one of the dorms facing the airfield, this is nothing like you have ever seen before at DAB. The ATC must be having a nightmare. Taxiway E is closed for helicopter operations on Race day, which are constantly in and out before the race. Runway 16/34 is closed to park corporate jets. Starting around 6am Race day the steady stream of traffic arrives up until the race starts. Then the military jets take off, fly over, and land back at DAB. Halfway thru the race, a lot of corporate sponsors start leaving, especially if their car gets in a wreck so there is a steady stream of departing jets about an hour or more before the race is done. After the race the airport is clogged for hours with jets taking off.

Last year, I was down right near the threshold of 7L on Sunday while waiting to find out where I would be working. Oh was that a treat, especially when one of the 707's came in  Smile

Anyway, let me know if you're interested in meeting up.

And it wouldn't have hurt my feelings at all if Kyle (Little Punk that he is) Busch woulda wound up in the wall . . .

A very good Bud Shootout this year. Smoke did a great job, and had a great car for most of the rwce. I wouldn't be surprised if he does that next Sunday in the 500. The Toyotas started off well, but faded back in a way later in the race. No idea on what this says for them today for qualifying, but hopefully theres a good amount to keep the confidence up.

And David Gilliland is on pole with the #38 M&M's Ford. What a great story this guy has given us. Won a Busch race, and then gets a Nextel Cup ride, wins Talladega pole, and almost wins the Shootout. Watch out for him in the 500.

And the Bud Shootout couldn't come soon enough. My favorite driver wasn't in it, so all I wanted to see was an exciting race, unfortunately we have restrictor plates....TAKE OFF THE PLATES!

Anyway, I'm all about the 2003 Winston Cup Champion, Matt Kenseth.

Didn't help, though, that Tony Schumacher got blown out in the first round of eliminations on Sunday...

Actually, IIRC correctly, it goes both ways. Harry says it earlier in the movie, than Cole says it later (I think in the final Daytona 500). Could be wrong though. Been a while since I've seen it.

Quoting KaiGywer (Reply 6):
What would be fun to watch....a NASCAR race going the wrong way. They're trained to make left turns...now let's make them do right turns for a race

In Australia we ran a series called AUSCAR - it's an oval race on the Calder Thunderdome (1.5 mile oval) in MEL using Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon-bodied cars (I think the actual specs are much like NASCAR, except they're right hand drive).

Whilst the "NASCAR" series turned left (yes we had a NASCAR series here too), the AUSCAR series ran the other way. It was quite silly to watch.

As a long-time fan of JPM in CART and in F1, I hope he does well. Doubtful he will win though.

And of course, as an Aussie am cheering on Marcos Ambrose in the Busch series this year (and selected Cup starts too).

That happened many times BEFORE the flaps too, and after the PLATES! Tumbling down the track or infield is NOT going up in the stands. The competitors know they are in a risky business. The plates were put in to keep the horsepower down and keep the cars out of the grandstands. After the plates, the flaps were deveoped and keep the cars down, (at least out of the stands) and the plates should be removed so the race, racecar drivers, and engine builders determine the winner, not the sanctioning body of the sport..

I'm glad to see him join NASCAR, but I think winning this year is a stretch. If he avoids the "big one" he should have a good finish.

Hey, remember what Villeneuve did in CART and the F1.

I haven't watched NASCAR for a while, and I was watching Qualifying on Sunday. It came as a real shock when i looked at the TV and saw a Toyota going around the track! I almost barfed.

Then I got used to the Idea and decided they actually looked kinda neat!  Wink

Cheers

I'm impressed with Gilliland & Rudd on the front row for the 500 for RYR. That said, that may not be an indicator as to how they run this season, as Jarrett won the pole for the 500 in 2005 & with the exception of the 'Dega win, was hardly heard from. I'm also looking forward to seeing what Toyota can do. I could see them getting a win this year from either Jarrett or Mayfield but I can't see them turning the world upside down this year by any means.

As always, go Jeff Gordon & Smoke! Big grin

The IRL cars never ran the (full) oval at Daytona... every test they've done has been on the road course (which uses the backstretch, turns 3 & 4 and the trioval)

Right, which is why I said...

IRL cars tested here in November and just a few weeks ago, and had to run the inside road course because they also got way too fast on the back and frontstretch

I don't see them getting even a sniff of a win.... they need better teams, first. If Penske or Ganassi had jumped on board, then you might have a leg to stand on. But the only two cars in the Toyota stable guaranteed to make the first 5 races are Dave Blaney (top 35 in 2006 owners points) and Dale Jarrett (past champion)

Mikey Waltrip, Reutimann, Vickers, Allmendinger, and Mayfield have to do it on speed.

And of course, Kasey Kahne manages to crash with 1/4 mile to go . . . something about Kahne and walls at race tracks. . . .

That's my boy, make it 99.9% of the way and lose it on the last lap. Oh well, we'll have to see how this season goes for him, I'd love to see him and Smoke contending for the championship.
