National Hockey League Going To The UK?

Tue Feb 13, 2007 1:44 am

The NHL can't even sell itself in the US.....and here they're going to drop in a few regular season games in the UK:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2762817

Don't get me wrong.....I love the NHL, but a league that can't get itself a decent US TV package, and is now trying to introduce itself worldwide (and yes, I know about Tokyo) has got some seriously missplaced priorities.

Why the UK?

It's not like there's a great interest in the sport dying to find some expression. Same with the American football teams coming over here.

I can understand it the other way around - the US is a vast potential market for football (soccer) teams to tap into, but not this way.

Why the UK? Why not countries where NHL players come from like Sweden, Russia, Czech Rep etc? The only NHL players from that region that I can think of are Owen Nolan (from Ireland) and Steve Thomas (retired).

I would have thought that these were better choices as well. But hey, I'm not complaining. It's been a long time since I last saw an NHL game.

Their owner, Phillip Anschutz, also owns the arena in the UK where they would play the games...

Exactly what i thought, even Switzerland would be a better choice than the UK.

Or even Germany. In Germany there is quite an interest in Hockey as well (at least it's much bigger than with American Football).

To those of you saying we don't have much of a Hockey following in the UK,
we have one main "premier" league of Hockey and several smaller leagues.
Teams are dotted about the country, and there's actually a surprising niche market here, with my local teams arena being filled up to capacity often.
So to those of you saying there isn't much of a Hockey fanbase here, I think you'd find its bigger than American Football.
Mind you, I will comment that out of all the visitors to my Hockey fansite (http://www.powerplaygoal.com) its really neck and neck USA and Canada for visitors.
I'll leave you with a photo that I took from a game here recently.

Thanks for the site comment btw, means a lot.

I happen to be a member of the PowerPlayGoal.com team as well. If you're the type who obsesses over team logos, you'll like my blog 'Behind the Logo'.

Anyway, onto the topic of this thread. It's great news that the NHL will be getting some real recognition over here at last. If my Ducks can accompany the Kings on their trip to the Dome I'll be there straightaway! Big grin

Well, my next Behind the Logo blog will be about the Red Wings. Also if you have a high quality photo of their arena from the outside, I can make a desktop wallpaper as part of a series I have done.  Smile

Hell no! What we can do is take some of the dying teams out of the US and add them to areas in Canada which would die for a team!

Absolutely - it's high time these teams which aren't drawing well at all are moved. So...where should we move the Blackhawks and the Blues?

That's not going to happen soon I feel.

Though I would like to see the Winnipeg Jets return. Perhaps Airliners.net should have a little look around for money and we could buy them. Its aviation themed isnt it... well sort of.

I'm against moving the Blackhawks just because they were an original six team.

St. Louis could go to Winnipeg.
Hamilton or even Toronto could easily sustain another team.
Quebec City could handle one again I bet.
Halifax maybe?
London, Ontario, the London Knights are huge there, I'm sure NHL would follow suit.

Keep Dallas, Tampa, LA and Phoenix. I visit those places and normally catch a game. You would also have to leave NYR, Detroit, Chicago and Boston. Other than the original six and the cities that I visit, sure, pull them all up here.

I would love it if they all succeeded and all did well. But, if they need to move, forget the likes of Oklahoma or Las Vegas, there's plenty of markets that would love a team in Canada.
