I'm So Excited! The Police Are Going On Tour!

Tue Feb 13, 2007 4:42 pm

Wow! The Police are going on tour again! I can't wait! That's a must-go for me!

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/arti..._N12388626_RTRUKOC_0_UK-POLICE.xml

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Reunited rock trio the Police said on Monday they would launch a world tour in May, more than 20 years after frontman Sting angered his bandmates by leaving for a successful solo career.

Sting, 55, joked during a news conference that he was "certifiably insane" to resurrect the band for a tour that will begin in North America and take in Europe, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Long resistant to the idea of a reunion with his estranged bandmates, guitarist Andy Summers, 64, and drummer Stewart Copeland, 54, Sting said he woke up one day about three months ago and decided to call them up and suggest a tour.

"If you'd asked me the day before I made this decision, I would have said, 'You're out of your mind. My head is somewhere else,'" he said.

The Police ended their seven-year run following a 1984 world tour for the album "Synchronicity," which included the Grammy-winning song of the year "Every Breath You Take."

Sting, the group's primary songwriter, who once described the Police as "a marriage of convenience," wanted more creative freedom. Summers and Copeland wanted the group to carry on, even though tension within the band often led to fistfights.

And there, somewhere else, should his head stay. True artists should proceed and create new things.
That's why I'm happy Peter Gabriel does not want to tour with Genesis again, though I really like old Genesis.

Are you going to send an SOS to the world? Will Roxanne have to put on that dress tonight? Wherever they go, will you be watching them?

Exactly....once I adored Police, I still believe they are one of the best things that happened in popular music during the 20th century....this could go wrong...horribly wrong, a clap-along show with all those great songs adjusted to the 2007 mainstream audience. And Police was definitely NEVER intended to be mainstream.

btw: is there an album coming along?
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Probably a "new" live album. Why should they miss this obvious chance to sell a couple of thousand records?
At the same time, I don't believe they are doing it primarily for financial reasons. All three, and first and foremost Sting who had the original idea, are wealthy enough not to be tempted to make some easy money. At least they should not feel tempted to ...

I'll certainly pay my ticket to finally see them live !!!! Sting has always been a great source of inspiration when I learned (and I still learn) playing bass guitar. I certainly want to see Stewart Copeland doing his job for The Police. I've been very sceptic about thoses reash tours, but last time I saw a concert like this was The Who last year in a festival, and it was an incredible gig! I'm sure The Police's tour will be excellent.

I'm looking forward to this and will most likely purchase a ticket if they play PHX. In my mind the Police and GNR are the best bands of the 80's.

They've been a working band again for the past seven years now. Besides, they always were an extraodinary live act.

But I do agree with you, I think the Police will be excellent performers.

Ok, but as soon as you start compromising your reputation as an artist, this can backfire. And Sting would certainly face kind of a herculean task to spend all his money before disappears from this world anyway. That's ok in my book. He doesn't conduct sweatshops in the far east, he doesn't exploid the poor. His house his his sweatshop and the only one sweating is him. I just don't like reanimated musical zombies - first The Who, now The Police, and one day (but hopefully not) Genesis. And, frankly, the mere idea of seeing a 55-year-old singing De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da makes me cringe.
Rather than dwelling in the past, I'd rather want Sting to come with something fresh.

You can't say that just because they're older, that's ridiculous. No-one ever said that Beethoven should give up because he was over 30. In the case of the latter you mention, they have a new album out, critically acclaimed, which makes up a substantial proportion of their show. The question is, are they good. If they are, what's the problem?

But that's not the point. I don't care about the age of these three gentlemen, heck Gabriel is in his mid-fifties and balding, still I'd steal to get my hands on a ticket if he's on tour once in a decade. Thing is, I'd feel uncomfortable would he tour with Genesis and perform "The Lamb .." again. Great times, certainly, but they are over, and artists should proceed.

However, I did not know The Police recorded a new album with new sonsgs. One German newspaper said, they were undecided if they'd come with some new material.

Here's the offer for the Toronto show. I think I'll pass on this one.

http://www.ticketsnow.com/TicketsList.aspx?PID=466860

Correction: This page is way too expensive. Ticketmaster talks about $ 59.50-225 range. Anyway, I consider $ 45 for the YES 30-th anniversary tour show money way better spent.

$50 - $225 according to L.A. Times, Spiegel (or was it the Frankfurter?) reports.

Ahh not too bad.

I wouldn't shell out 225, but 50 seems about reasonable.

Then again, 50 would probably get you a ticket in the back, behind a big pillar...

Still, I'm excited to see them going back on tour. I saw Sting last summer at the Werchter Classics rock festival... he was great... such a captivating presence. Such a voice... such great music!

Well, if you happen to be in Europe in summer (or was it fall?): tickets are still a lot cheaper over here then in America.
I wouldn't go to a stadium to see Police anyway; three men and 12 lamps on a giant stage 200 yards away - pretty much pointless.
Best would be a club of course, but a normal venue (an audience of up to 8,000) would be ok. If I go, that is.

Glad to hear of the new tour.

Glad to hear that they are putting there past fights behind them. I know that it wont be the same as it was 25 years ago but at least it gives people the opportunity to see them live.
I wish I could have went with my older sister to see them perform Chicago's Soldier Field with Joan Jett back in 1983 on the Synchronicity tour.

Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland are outstanding musicians. I am sure it they recorded an album it would be outstanding.

I wonder if Andy Summers has discovered the bass and midrange knobs on his amplifier sometime over the past 22 years.

HAHA!
I believe he deliberately went for a light guitar sound. It sounds very artistic and he plays with a lot of finesse. Perhaps thats why he chose the Fender Telecaster which is supposed to sound twangy and light.
I hope he didn't find the bass and midrange knobs because then they'd sound like every rock group out there today.

Did Joan Jett open?

To think that was going to be my first rock concert only to be told that I couldn't go just hours before the show.  Sad
My sister and her friends had an extra ticket and if they couldn't find someone else to buy the ticket, I would have went.
I was 10 years old at the time.

Instead she took me to see Denise Williams a few months later. How lame is that?!?!?!?!

Here's hoping they come to Argentina!!! I mean they come to south america, they might as well stop in BA.

If they do, I'm going. I don't care how much I have to pay... the police is one of those FEW bands that I've always regretted not being able to see on tour... It's gonna be crazy!

I'm not a big fan of these reunions, but this one deserves an exception!!!
