Sony Vaio: Which One?

Sun Feb 18, 2007 5:39 pm

Ok, I need some advice on this one. I'm undecided between the SZ430 and the SZ450.

It seems as though all the hardware is the same and that the only differences are that the 430 has WAN whereas the 450 doesn't, and the 450 weighs less and has an LED back light on the screen.

So should I shell the extra $100 for the lighter version and for the LED light?

Cheers,
Coal

These days I didn't know you could get a laptop without WAN. That being said, I would go with the 430. Or get a MacBook pro, you will be a lot happier.  smirk

WAN is not the same as Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi)

I'm actually getting rid of a MacBook

How so?

But is it a Pro?
If so, are you ok?

Thanks

I don't like Macs. Period.

Now if anyone would be kind enough to answer the question and not suggest a Mac that'd be great Big grin

Well, it simply depends on if you need the WAN part or not. If you don't need WAN and you're sure that you won't need it in the next couple of years, go for the 450. If WAN is an important feature for you, get the 430... it would be the key point for me.

For example, I currently own a Vaio VGN-FE11S (without WAN - I didn't even know a laptop with integrated WAN existed when I bought it). I would have bought a MacBook, but my mobile carrier's GPRS/EDGE/UMTS data card isn't compatible with Macs, and having this WAN function is a basic need for me.

There, now it's up to you ... decide on whether you need that integrated WAN or not.

Apart from the built-in EDGE adapter it's a comprehensive downgrade from a MacBook in many respects - weaker port specs (slower LAN and WLAN, crippled FireWire, no digital audio, no digital video et cetera) and a much higher price - unless you compare with a MacBook Pro, but that one is still farther ahead than a normal MacBook.

Even a MacBook just running Windows is cheaper and ahead of the Vaio in many respects.

I know I won't need the WAN for the next 3-4 years. So in that case I guess I'll go for the 450.

A computer name with too many vowels in the title to pronounce, Vaio - Sounds like the noise a cat would make if you fed it through a mango! - Jeremy Clackson

a) I'm certainly not as rude as you are.

b) It's your decision - but others may still benefit from a closer look at the options they've got.

Quite rude. I take that back.

Well, then maybe they can start their own threads.

I guess in the end I'm gonna go with the 450.

Can't help you much, but I got an SRX-87, it's aged, but still going strong, and has been through a heck of a lot, unless I have to, I'm reluctant to replace it...

Vaio....
