Why Are So Many Shops Closed On Carnival Monday?

Tue Feb 20, 2007 1:42 am

I just came back from the city center where I had to do a few things and I simply can't believe how many shops are closed today:

- Post office: closed
- Bank: closed
- Gas station: closed
- Beverage shop: closed
- Dry-cleaner: closed

There were only a few supermarkets open, nothing else.  Angry Fortunately I found an open gas station after driving a bit around town.

This is getting out of hand! Last time I checked I saw that Carnival Monday isn't a public holiday here in Germany, especially not here in the Ruhr-Area. I wouldn't complain when I would live a few kilometers westward in Dusseldorf or Cologne where people are Carnival crazy.

How is it in other parts of Germany and in other countries? Business as usual or everything closed?

Perhaps all of the employees have gone to the carnival? Wink

It might as well be here.....it's Lundi Gras in New Orleans, Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday is tomorrow.....crowds are already camping out on St. Charles Ave for the Rex/Zulu parades tomorrow.....no school until Thursday.

It's also President's Day here in the US, so no mail delivery, Wall Street is closed.....however the airport never rests, so I'm here doing my thing, keeping my contractors in line, etc, etc.

Move to northern Germany (or Berlin). Rose Monday is a perfectly normal working day here.

Normal business day in my neck of the woods... In fact, Carnival is no biggie here; you just have schoolkids dressed up in costumes, breaking eggshells on each other's heads (quite fun Big grin ). I think some communities in the countryside celebrate it, though.
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

One of the countless advantages of Hamburg: no carnival.
We don't need Pappnasen and Kölsch (for those who don't know it - that's kind of horse pee) to feel happy for 4 days. We are happy being ourselves 365 days a year... Big grin

Carnival and Mardi Gras (and certainly Presidents Day, you upstart rebel colonials  snooty  ) means as much to us as Guy Fawkes night does to you. Thus, normal working day.

My wife and me are sometimes having breakfast at the Marche Restaurant at the airport on sundays, when the weather is nice. Afterwards some spotting, depending on where they land at that time.

Been spotting last sunday at Flughafenstrasse bridge, next to Rwy 23. Missed the Iran Air flight though, which arrived early  Sad ...

Just came home after 6 days of non-stop drinking. I cannot understand why some people do not like Karneval. It was so great this year.

Fortunately, in cologne there is a kiosk every 500 metres where you get Kölsch Beer...

I never said that I don't like Karneval, it is fun to party in Dusseldorf or Cologne, I just complained about the closed shops here in the Ruhr-Area on Carnival Monday.

You'd honestly think it would appeal to Americans, especially since celebrations include fireworks and bonfires. We love any excuse to shoot off fireworks here, legally or illegally.
