Deoxyribonucleic Acid

Thu Feb 22, 2007 2:15 pm

DNA is the only known molecule in the universe that can replicate itself. In your body there are around 550 copies made every second. Each strand of DNA is unique to the person, plant or animal it belongs to.

Deoxyribonucleic Acid is my new favorite word. Just thought you should know.

My favourite long word is "enterohepatopulmonary migration". or "dostoprimyechatelnost" in russian lagnuage.

As for DNA, it actually doesnt have the ability to replicate itself, it needs a large complex of proteins for its replication, as well as RNA and other biopolymers. And theres one interesting group of proteins called prions (causing the CJD, BSE and other encephalopathies) where some of them are probably able to change other prions to their special shapem causing the disease.

All the DNA stuff, genetic coding issues and all the chemistry around is just amazing! I studied it a lot past few years and I must say I still dont understand how is it possible to work  Smile
there is no coincidence

Tell me about it... that's the part of Biochem that I love(d). Unfortunately, it was over much too fast. One thing I found very interesting is that reverse transcriptases are just as vital to humans as they are to viruses.

Not true. RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) can actually be replicated and function as enzymes (which was thought only proteins could) thus being called Ribozymes. Besides, you can always "replicate" RNA into cDNA (complementary DNA) using reverse-Transcriptase PCR. This is what RNA virus (such as HIV) use to infect host cells.

In 1999 I had a 2,5 hours oral exam in the USA about this topic, among others.  confused   bomb

No, that was just a part of what they called the "comprehensive examination" of the basic level to achieve the PhD "proficiency" and then be tested again on more specific subjects pertaining my thesis (the "viva").... It was all a big experiment on foltering students to see at which level they would start requiring the white long sleeved jacket....

The most amazing thing about DNA is that in all it's variations, it is only composed of four nucleobases - Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine.

The sci-fi film about genetic pre-determination used combinations of the letters used to represent these nucleobases (A, C, G, T) in its title - GATTACA.

Juggernaut was a terrorist who planted 6 bombs aboard of the Britannic cruise ship. Richard Harris, who was prior his involvement with Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry an ordnance disposal specialist, had to be transported to the ship in order to defuse the bombs.
