Your Opinion Of Country Music?

Mon Feb 26, 2007 12:47 am

Three years ago I would have told you country is possibly the worst music on the face of the earth. But after I joined my fire department, I became bombarded by it, and eventually got hooked. In the back of my head I know it sounds bad to most people, but it's an addiction. So what's your opinion of it? It seems to me people either love or hate it.

Easy does it guys, I listened to country music for the past twenty-five or so years. Its the closest music type to folk that is this out there. But what I have noticed over the past several years, especially the newer male artists they all seem to sound the same at least the women are different with the types of songs they sing.

I have to agree, the new guys do sound the same.

Of course, the most annoying thing though is that since 9/11, all of the seasoned male country stars have gone ultra radical pro-war neo-conservative, while the seasoned females are maintaining middle of the road.

My opinion?

Ehhh..I can tolerate it for a little while. I'd rather listen to country than to something like pop. But its not my favorite, although I do respect the artists that sing country music.

It varies for me. It depends on what kind of mood I'm In, and on top of that, the quality in the written music itself!  Wink

Country is my all time favorite, I enjoy songs from nearly every artist, with the ranks of Kenny Chesney ( fav #1 male singer), and Shania Twain (fav #1 woman singer), with CD's owned by LeAnn Rimes, Tim Mcgraw, Faith Hill, Reba McEntire, Gretchen Wilson (my hometown girl, shes from my area!! ).

In fact mom is blaring LeAnn Rimes song "Probably wouldn't be this way"

LeAnn Rimes famous song hit, "Blue" is what got me into country music.

When it comes to what people call 'real' country my opinion is as follows:

vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit   vomit

No give me something more progressive like the Dixie Chicks and I'll gladly take my time to change the channel instead of running to the bathroom for a vomit fest.

no, it certainly does NOT sound bad. I always liked it and still do. I prefer Jazz, but for example when driving, Country-music is more "peaceful".

"We like both kinds of music, country and western. " One of my favoite quotes from the film Blues Brothers.

I love Hank Williams. He is top 10 for me overall in any genre. Incredible lyrics. After that it goes downhill pretty fast. There's a fair amount of decent new country music but it's so close to bluegrass that it really isn't country anymore.

well, various. Jazz, Country&Western, Arab music. Rock ? Yes, I always liked Chuck Berry and the Rolling Stones. Gave up on the Rolling Stones when they became "strange" in the late 60ies but still love things of Chuck Berry. I in their days loved Petula Clark and Cliff Richard and still find Mireille Matthieu nice. I in the late 50ies early 60ies found some songs of Harry Belafonte really great.

I think currently there is a lot more creativity in country music than in rock/pop. Also, the definition of what country is seems to be expanding. I like music that hasn't been produced and processed to death. A lot of pop music reminds me of Spam.

I love country music.

Currently, I am really enjoying Little Big Town. They made a phenomenal country album that any country fan who hasn't should check out.

Other faves: Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Shania Twain, SHeDAISY, Dixie Chicks, Toby Keith, Rodney Atkins, George Strait, Lucinda Williams, Kasey Chambers, Keith Urban, Emerson Drive, The Wreckers, Alison Kraus, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Chely Wright, and many more.
Prepare doors for departure and cross-check.

I used to think country music was for hicks and people who drive pick up trucks until this Thursday. My ipod's battery had died and I borrowed my friends iPod since we had the same class together. He likes country music so I decided to listen to a bit of it. I found it to be pretty good for the most part. The music was about real life and how it effects people. I still won't be a fan but my opinion and thoughts about it are changed. True, all the guy singers sound pretty much the same.

Shitcan the whiny steel guitars, the nasal twang, and the cowboy hats & boots and it MIGHT be OK. And stop recycling the same depressing themes over and over.

Bluegrass is kickass, however.  bigthumbsup

It depends. I hate pop country with a passion that borders on holy. It is just, for the most part, recycled crap by people with very little talent but who look good. Rascal Flatts is country? Bullshit.

If you want to talk about Conway Twitty, Tex Ritter, Willie, Waylon, Merle, Pat Green's first couple albums, Patsy Cline, Dave Dudley, Charlie Robison, Robert Earl Keen, and a few others like that, then I definitely like country music. Some songs in the past few years (since 2000 or so) have been alright, but there ain't just a whole lot of them. Anyone can make an overcommercialized piece of crap song about a generic topic and put no feeling into it. When a singer, regardless of genre, really makes me believe what they are singing about, that's when I really like the music. Unfortunately, music in general just seems to have taken a downward trend the past decade or so, maybe longer than that.

The commercial stuff (Toby Keith, et all) from the last twenty years is all crap IMHO. Virtually anything traditional (or anything I see in a random bar on a Tuesday night) is pretty cool. My only serious beef with country music is the abundancy of artists who aren't writing and playing their own songs.

I'm honestly surprised nobody posted this yet:

I'm not too much into Country Music. About as deep as a delve is Johnny Cash, Pasty Cline, some old George Jones, and some Hank Sr. Maybe some "outlaw" country (Waylon, Willie, Hank Jr, Merle, David Allen Coe) as well. Loretta Lynn's last album, "Van Lear Rose" was pretty good, of course having Jack White of the White Stripes produce the album and some other garage rock musicians playing with her helped as they have an appreciation for the legends of Country.

As the old joke goes:

I agree wholly. I love George Strait, George Jones, and traditional country. It's weird. I grew up listening to soft rock, and now I love steel guitars and fiddles. I listened to anything from Lionel Richie to Kenny Rogers (the pop stuff) and now I'm hooked on traditional country and bluegrass. I just saw George Strait and Ronnie Milsap at Mellon Arena in PIT two weekends ago.

I hate 98% of country.

Dixie Chicks are alright.

David Allen Coe is cool because he did the Rebel Meets Rebel project with Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, and of course who doesn't love Willie?

But this modern stuff is a pile of shit, especially Toby Keith who I can't stand for his chickenhawk lyrics.

I still remember to have driven, back in 1976, from New Orleans to Houston, and when turning on the radio in Louisiana it was all Jazz. But the nearer I came to the Texas border, the louder became the Texan stations who all were in the Country&Western sound !

Well folks.....just to get tuned into my sensibilities here I dragged out some Bob Wills sides and ran them through.....they seem to have absolutely nothing to do with current day country music...

So, yeah. Country music blows.

But Bob Wills is still the King. And Freddy Fender is his right hand man.

Are we talking about modern country, or classic country? If it's modern, then it's garbage. Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Chicks with Dicks, et al, can take their achy breaky big mistakeys and have their own private party - I don't wanna hear it.

However, if we're talking about classic...there's no denying the greatness of people like Johnny Cash and Chet Atkins. It's a different kind of country music; more of an emotive force of style than a twangy cacophony. While it's not my favourite type of music to listen to, I'm not opposed to putting on some Cash every now and then.

Thats because country now seems to be rock bands that just didn't have the talent to make the big time as rock bands.

Back when country actually was country I didn't really like it, but I at least recognized it as a valid form of music. Now it is like pop and lame rock got together and had a retarded child, and that child was named Country.
