SFO Or LAX, Which City Is Better?

Mon Feb 26, 2007 4:40 am

I personally prefer San Francisco to LA any day. It is a much better city.
Did you ever read on your birth certificate that life is fair? Thats cause its not there.

I've lived in both places. San Francisco is a City. Los Angeles is a Basin. Choose accordingly.

Give me LA! I was only once in San Franciso and never had the desire to go back. As a gay man I found it TOO gay. You could live, play, work and die in a gay world and never step out of it. Also, I was surprised to see a surprising amount of anti-gay graffiti. And, the weather isn't as good as LA!

On the other hand, I've been to LA probably about ten times and loved it each time. It happens to be my favourite (or should that be "favorite") American city. It is America as it should be: big, brash and extreme in everthing. Yet it has its surprising side: I just love the low-rise of places like West Hollywood and Santa Monica. Most cities have an era which defines them, usually a period when they were at their peak and which their best architecture comes from (eg New York 1930s, Paris 19th century) and LA is the only city I can think of which evokes the 1950s.

And there are some fit men! The only thing that disapponted me about LA was the dearth of good late-night bars/clubs for a city of its size. Someone explained to me that it's because of the film (sorry, "movie") industry, where everone rises early for shoots.

I guess the question is to visit or to live in?

For living...

Quoting Braybuddy (Reply 2):
Give me LA!

...while costs can be high compared to living outside of CA, and I feel like there's a dearth of culture when I'm actually in LA (I can't explain why -- they have musuems, live theater, orchestra, etc... it's just my perception) I would much rather take the LA area. Then again I was raised in Southern California, so it natrually feels more at home to me.

San Francisco/the Bay Area is cool to visit (and BART rocks) -- I feel like I'm in a city, I feel like I'm surrounded by culture and history, but I wouldn't want to live there -- the cost of living is out of control, and just about everthing the city does is over the top... The city is way too liberal for my tastes (as in taxation and government telling me how to run my life/business not so much that the city is socially liberal)

Quoting Braybuddy (Reply 2):
And, the weather isn't as good as LA!

"The coldest winter of my life was a summer in San Francisco" -- credited to Mark Twain, but no record that he ever said that. Regardless, each time I've been in San Francisco I couldn't help but think whomever actually uttered those words couldn't be more spot on.

I see LA as one big strip mall on the beach.

San Francisco has every kind of craziness that can be imagined on one small peninusula. I prefer SF.

San Francisco is the only California city I'd like to live in. LA is a ticking timebomb of fanatic social diversity.

San Francisco by a lap or eight. I have very little tolerance for anything that requires me to visit that brown, smoggy sh*thole to the south.

SFO and LAX are airports....  Wink

I've never been to San Franscisco, but having made a shed load of visits to Los Angeles I would like to think that both of the cities offer totally different things.

Me personally though...

I absolutely love and adore LA for many different reasons. I've visited nearly 10 times in the past 3 years and I want to go back more each time. I love just how extreme things are in this damn city. I love driving down to Santa Monica and just hanging out with friends. I love driving towards Ventura and hanging out. I miss the 405 when I'm not there and I miss the 101 just as much. I can't explain why I like the (dangerous and busy) roads but I'm starting to love the freakin' 'California Sweep'!  Wink

I have a lot of connection with LA and surrounding areas due to most of my friends on the West Coast being from up in the hills in Calabasas (Which is a pretty little town). It's one place that I'll never tire of visiting. I don't go down to the South that much but it's just as nice there.

LA has this great vibe that I feel everytime I'm there. Perhaps it's a drug that I'll never stop being addicted to?!

My vote goes to LA..... Btw!  Wink

In my experience, I had a fantastic week in San Francisco staying with a good friend of mine, therefore meaning that I had a much more plesant experience in San Francisco than I did in Los Angeles. I'm not saying I didn't like Los Angeles though. Los Angeles has a helluva lot to see, do, visit and so on (with my favourite being Venice).

This is almost like comparing apples and oranges...they are so different. LA is a vast area to me, not just a city, extending all the way through the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, and down through Orange County. I love visiting SoCal, and go about everywhere when I do. San Francisco is more of an actual city where many attractions are right there in the city...Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, long list. I love to visit San Francisco, and go up to Muir Woods and hike through the Redwoods.

I love both areas about equally...I can't really choose one over the other, since each has such different attractions. When I lived in San Bernardino, I took numerous trips up to San Francisco for visits. So...no vote here.
Those who want to do something will find a way; those who don't will find an excuse.

El Lay is a great place to be a tourist. It has a lot of places to go, things to do, people to see. It's a culture of its own.

Ess Eff is more cosmopolitan, and has more of what you're used to in Europe, in many ways. I could see how it'd be looked upon as "so what?" by many--you really have to live there to see that the quality of life is much better than it is in the Southland for a number of reasons. I like both for their own features, but I was born and raised in Ess Eff, and that's where my preference lies.

Is this a trick question, like asking us which one is better, a 1986 Yugo or a 1982 Chevy Chevette?

Personally, I wouldn't live in either.

Too many people
Too many taxes
Too many laws and regulations

Cool place's to fly in and out of... but thats more than enough for me..

I choose SD, it's probably one of the more "normal" places in the state. LA is too congested crowded and big... If you love cars, and you like yours a lot, Live in LA, you'll spend most of your time in traffic. SF is a cool city, but only if you can afford to live there. California is notorious for being extremely expensive... Be ready to shell around 800 000 dollars for a three bedroom condo, and if you want to live in a house, expect more than a million.

LA better weather
SF more of city

SD = smaller mixture of the two.

San Diego is significantly larger than San Francisco on a city-city comparison.

I prefer Los Angeles, always have and always will and I will tell you why. It is by far the best city in the world to LIVE in. While it has the major fault of a crap public transit system (though it isn't as bad as most think), it is a true center of world culture that attracts all kinds of food, festival, party, etc. The decentralized nature of the city leads to it having many smaller centers which means you can go to a new one each day and have a totally different experience. The weather is better and there are always at least 5 ways to go somewhere so you can avoid the traffic everyone hears about.

San Francisco is a pretty place with some cool people, but I always find that the attitude of people there tends to be a bit of a shell that ends up looking a lot more ugly once you break through while L.A. is the opposite, a place of generally warm and friendly people once you get past the "everyone wants to be an actor" mystique.

Maybe that's the reason. There really is nowhere else like LA that it is such a novelty, even going back again and again. It's a kind of glimpse into the future. San Francisco is just another city.

My friend moved to San Fran a year ago and I've been out to visit him a few times. I kept hearing about the cost of living being so high, but to be honest, I didn't find it bad at all!

My friend agrees.

I pick SFO.

SFO is much more beautiful, IMHO...the fog, the building styles, the ocean (the bay in particular), the way there is less smog, and the vegetation make it a lot prettier than LAX...also, there the sea and air traffic, plus the huge bridges all make it seem like a great international city. It's a much more stylish city than LAX.

LAX is too sprawling, for me, but it does have a lot of attractions. The landscape is also not that nice.

If one has to go by US Census statistics, people are moving out of SF - city had -5% population growth in last five years while California in general had +7% gain. So all complaints about being "pricey" is very much true.

Also compared to other "big" cities, SF is really small city - 46 square miles vs 498 sq miles of LA.

That said having lived in SF Bay Area for more than 10 years, I won't trade this for LA. The scenery, ability to go to beach or ski or Sierra in 2-3 hours is just great. Not to mention being right in the center of tech innovation, home of Apple etc - I guess Silicon valley vs Silicone valley  Wink

I would have to choose LA over SF any day. SF has some pretty vile areas and it is very hard to get around. If you dont make $500K a year you are going to have to commute from Pleasanton or Stockton...ouch...

But,

I live about 75 miles from both LA and San Diego. Im lucky to visit SF, LA, and SD several times a year. I have to agree that San Diego beats both LA and SF by a long margin. Its a big city that is also very beautiful. The weather is even better than LA. I love the Gaslamp.

That was another point I meant to make. When it became known that I had accepted a position outside of the university, a company that I had worked and is based in San Francisco counteroffered with basically the same package but "you get to stay in California". I figured out that for a similar standard of living they would have to had to offer somewhere around $40k a year -more- in real salary $$$ for it to be close to a wash -- and I got a better vibe from the company I'm working for now.

I grew up in LA but also lived many years in the bay area. Frankly, they both have pluses but I wouldn't want to live in either.

RE: S.F.:

Quoting 767Lover (Reply 26):

Yeah, I kind of agree. I think that SF is the most overrated city around. It's got some great parts but a serious attitude problem--i.e. it thinks it is the center of the world and the most cosmopolitan place and all that, yet it doesn't hold a candle to NY or London and ends up feeling all the more provincial for its pretense. Plus, while the vistas of the bay and bridges are spectacular, outside of downtown the architecture is pretty ugly (pastel stucco and rotting wood--barf!). Finally, hills get old, fast, when you have to bike them or walk them all the time. Every city should have a few good hills for looking down from, and then some flat places...S.F. has not enough of the latter (the Sunset just doesn't count...)

Then again, I like the city's progressive poilitics, and its foggy weather.

LA, on the other hand, drives me nuts with its hot, sunny weather (yes I hate that), its car culture, and its sprawl. It's not my kind of city, which is one where you can walk around and not have a car and feel that you really are in the center of things.

But LA has WAY more going on culturally, and any bay area snob who tries to deny that has just been drinking the SF boosterism kool-aid. In LA the diversity of people, music, restaurants, art, is much higher, and I ultimately find it a more interesting place.

So I see plusses in both, but don't really like either that much.

PS: They are both equally earthquake-prone!

I have been to both many times (I live in Santa Barbara (SBA) 90 mi north of LAX and about 200 mi south of SFO) and I just LOVE going down south to the LA area . While I would love to have an apt in Downtown Los Angeles, I would much rather live in a sourrounding city like ONT, BUR.

SFO is a great city to visit or go to school for a semester, but I could not handle it every day of my life.

Most of the residential land mass of San Francisco is covered with single-family homes or duplexes, so there's a lot of room to grow. Noe Valley, The Richmond, The Sunset, all have a high proportion of single unit dwellings.

LA and SFO are totally different cities, it is not even fair to try to compare the two of them. This is a perfect example of comparing apples and oranges.

There are many things that you can do in LA that you can't do in SFO and viceversa, but they both offer plenty of entertainment opportunity for those willing to look for all these cities have to offer.

Living in SMF, we get to visit both cities all the time, since we have family living in both places. Our family car has a great GPS system, therefore we have an easy time finding something to do. Both cities offer plenty of opportunities to NEVER be bored.

From a Native Californian....
Is there not a third choice?

In my older years, I have come to the conclusion that SF and LA are like going out with the greatest looking lady in town. (Or man depending on your preference.) But when the initial spark of attraction is over, one finds that there is really nothing there. (I can't help but think of Jillian from "Family Guy"....)
SF: In a battle it cannot win over civic pride and ego with LA.
LA: The grand experiment failed, but no one can admit it, afterall, this is the land of fantasy.

When it is all said and done, the better girl (or boy) would have been the one not so attractive, not ugly, but pleasant, loyal and grounded, like a Cleveland, or Kansas City.

Nowadays, living in SF, more than likely means living in San Lorenzo, or Vallejo, or Modesto, or someplace as dreary as SF is dazzling....Meaning, SF is just a very small part of the Metropolitan experience, like some aging tourist attraction getting on in years.

In all my years of living on the fringe of the Bay, in Modesto and San Jose , I came to know, love, and leave many San Franciscans; the one thing I could never figure out about them was their blind allegiance to their city...it almost struck me as tragic.
While on the other hand, the Angelenos that came and went through my life were all, to some point, youthful optimists, lost in a sea swimming towards an unknown future. It didn't matter because they were living the dream...The sun, the surf, the sunsets, the sunday drives, the selebrity in thy midst.
SF is a place of brutal honesty, while LA gets lost on and in itself.

I have no use for either.

Either new cities such as Vacaville or Fairfield are now considered the Bay Area, or you are one damn speed racer.  Smile Honestly, that 2-3 hour figure from SF-Tahoe is non existant. I live in Sacramento and it can often take a good two hours to get up there. Not to mention two hours to get down to SF. So wouldn't you be looking at more of a 4-5 hour figure?

With regards to the thread, I believe both are excellent tourist spots. Highly recommended. However, I could never live in SF or LA for all the said reasons. Plus, why leave Sacramento? SF and Tahoe are both two hours away, lower population resulting in lower amounts of traffic, the cost of living is lower, plus it is more conservative in general - something I grew up with.

Huh, where are you? I was raised in Temecula and it sounds like basically the same situation. San Diego is a fantastic city, but (and SANfan will kill me if he hears me say ths) they seem way too indecisive and the recent political stuff can't have helped.

I live a little further north in the IE. Yes, im a 909er....

I actually measured the distance today and I live about 100 miles from SD and 60 miles from LA...

Quoting PSA53 (Reply 35):
San Diego has always been underrated like that

Visited San Diego in 2005. Great city. Underrated probably because of LA being 'close', but it is not really that close.

Quoting PSA53 (Reply 35):
But the top five are LA,SD,San Jose,SF and Long Beach.

But the metro area goes LA, SF, SD.

Quoting JetsGo (Reply 34):
Plus, why leave Sacramento? SF and Tahoe are both two hours away

But there is so much more than that. You have the Gold Country, Napa Valley, Yosemite, etc. Heck, we just spent a w/e in Calistoga, swimming in the hotsprings at night with the temperature outside just above freezing!

As a native of SoCal (and current resident of LA), I definitely am in the "pro-LA" camp. But I do love to visit San Francisco.

As others have said, apples and oranges. But...

In April, I will be visiting universities in both LA and San Francisco (in the process of applying for PhD courses in craniofacial medical research).

In Los Angeles, I have an interview scheduled April 3 at USC. During the same trip (the first week of April) I will fly up to SJC to visit Stanford and UCSF.

So, in the first week of April, I'll be flying over from London to visit both Los Angeles and San Francisco to visit these three universities. (My trip is BA LHR-LAX, WN LAX-SJC-LAX, and BA LAX-LHR).

The choice of which city to live in will be down to which (if any) of the three universities accept me for a PhD course.

Which is better to study in and live in as a PhD student?

By the way, I've never been in California before, so I'm excited about my upcoming April trip!

Whichever one takes you!

Be very careful about California, because as the song says 'you can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave!'. (Hotel California) Applies to all the family members I have in the state.

I don't really think USC is in the best part of town. I'd live away (far away) from campus if I attended school there.

Hey... you've described just the type of woman and city I'm looking for... And I love Cleveland. It's all of the good things about Southern California (except In-N-Out burger) with none of the crap... It also feels like there's so much culture and history here.

Sure this is a city that has a self-esteem issue and could do with some heavy duty psychological help and/or antidepresants but all in all I much prefer Cleveland to either LA or San Francisco.

(Cleveland also has the advantage that things rarely sell out unlike popular events in LA or SF -- I can decide 10 minutes before an event (theater, dance, music, whatever) that I want to go and virtually never have a problem getting a ticket.

I like SFO alot more, SFO is more of a city to me. LA is very spread out, I just dont like that much. San Fran is very nice and has great areas around it too, The area near Stanford University and Berkley are pretty nice places too. I spent a month in the Berkley area and had a great time very nice place.

Is the question unfinished?

Better to visit?
or
Better to live in?

I just thought of that...makes a big difference.

Gimme LA ! I love going there,I went there for a week last Summer, and enjoyed it immensely. It's funny,I told people @ work I was going to LA for a week on vacation, and almost everyone thought I was nuts . They thought it was all gang bangers and thugs. There is so much to see and do. I went to the Reagan museum, the Leno show, out to VCV,the beaches, and LAX . Everyone i encountered was friendly, too.

LA scored a bit more favorably than SF for parks and recreational opportunities, according to a study by EarthDay Network.

I asked that question way back in reply 3...

I guess the question is to visit or to live in?

...and unless I skimmed over it, the original poster has not clarified.

Not terribly fair, LA isn't a city it's one large strip mall after another development, just so happens they all fall into the Los Angeles City boundaries. SFO is a much better city, for one it's cleaner (not by the largest or margins, but crisp none the less), SFO has heard of Mass Transit that is actually useful (B.A.R.T. is one of the most convient transportation system in the US, get's ya where ya need to go, quickly cleanly, and cheaply). In SFO there is so much more to do, LA well is just LA. I personally adore SD overall for it's beauty, sights and lifestyle, sadly I cannot say the same for their government and their poor managment of controlling the developers seeping down from LA. SD is still SD, but everywhere North is just becoming more LA. But sadly someday SD's outerlimit will share the same line as LA's outer limit.

I'd choose San Francisco any day. I don't want to live in a place where you can't see the hills because of all the smog in the way.
