Chicago Mayor Wins 6th Term

Wed Feb 28, 2007 2:45 pm

Yes, a.net's most hated mayor has won re-election again...and Meigs Field will remain closed.  Wink

Daley re-elected
Mayor could become record holder in city's top office

February 27, 2007
BY DEANNA BELLANDI Associated Press

Mayor Richard M. Daley trounced two little-known challengers Tuesday in winning a sixth term that will allow him to surpass his legendary father and become Chicago's longest-serving mayor.

Daley's challengers in the nonpartisan election -- Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown and William ''Dock'' Walls, an aide to the late Mayor Harold Washington -- tried to make an issue of corruption and a federal investigation at City Hall that began with bribes paid to city officials for trucking work and expanded to city hiring practices.

...With 90 percent of precincts reporting, he had 72 percent of the vote amid low turnout. Daley had 290,626 votes, compared to 79,811 for Brown and 34,886 for Walls.

I thought I was reading a headline from the 1970s.

This is a surprise?

Daley and Chicago go together like Wine and Cheese.

Fortunately, the Wine and Cheese is usually much more palatable than Daley or Chicago.

Chicago has been a bastion of democrat/Daley Corruption for a half a century - even when there wasn't a Daley in office (Harold Washington/Jane Byrne) and that will never change. The influence is felt all the way tothe State Capitol. Gov. Blagojevich doesn't take a shit without getting Daley's permission. How do you think he got the job in the first place . . . .

Weird to think, I lived in Chicago when he won his first election.

That has sort of always been the feeling. Its not so much that he's beloved, but for the most part, he's effective, he's known and he's a true son of Chicago. "Better the devil you know. . . "

Gov. Blagojevich doesn't take a shit without getting Daley's permission

FYI, Gov. Blagojevich is the son-in-law of Alderman Richard Mell, a Daley ally. He currently serves as Chairman of the Committee on Committees, Rules and Ethics.

This is a surprise?

Nope. Daley has no challenger, even Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. refused to run against him although he entertained the thought briefly.

Yep, as long as the snow is plowed, garbage picked up and potholes filled...and that's Chicago's motto: The City That Works.

Daley won. There are no trumpets sounding at my house. But who opposed him? Who was big enough to take him down in an election?? *cricketts*

Daley indeed does a lot for Chicago depending what side of the street your standing on. Chicagoans love him. But this municipal election will have even lower voter turn out than the last mayor race!

How long does a mayor's term last in Chicago (or indeed any US city, if it's different)?

Chicago has a 4 year Mayoral term. Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and I think retty much any major city does a 4 year term. Any less than that and they just don't have time to be overly effective. Of course it varies from city to city. The small town I grew up in outside of Orlando had a 1 year term for the Mayor.

To the topic of Hizzoner getting this next term...fine by me since Chicago runs itself pretty good. Is there corruption in City Hall? Of course. Does Hizzoner have a hand in some of it? Most likely. Do I really care? No. The only really bad thing I can muster on him is his dislike of civil aviation cloaked in his anti-terror stance. And although I don't eat Foie Gras I think he and the city overstepped their boundaries by passing the ordinances to ban it in the city limits.

He is vehemently (sp) against the Foie Gras ban. Whats your point?

Anywho - i just paid Mr. Daley lots of money on my new property in Andersonville. But you know, after traveling to many many cities I can stil appreciate how great Chicago has become under his leadership.

Corrupt: sure, heavy handed: sure.. But with whatever he has left he does very very well for the city. Go ahead steal some money (all polititians do anyways) but with what you dont steal do something good!

Chicago definately has a love-hate relationship with this man.

On one hand, he makes the city look great and, as said earlier, the trash is always picked up.
Unfortunately that is all most Chicagoans care about....I can say that b.c I've lived there all my life!

On the other hand, there are few people more corrupt than him...hmmm, on that note - he'd be perfect as a Democrativ presidential candidate! ;-D
