McCain: American Lives "Wasted" In Iraq

Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:19 am

When Sen. Obama said lives had been "wasted" in Iraq, the entire right-wing machine flared up and forced the senator to apologize for his remarks. Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin had some fairly harsh words for him:

Quoting http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006858.htm:

it would be a waste of breath trying to get Sen. Obama to acknowledge the existence of countless soldiers and their families who reject his patronizing, infantilizing, and insulting view of all American troops as dupes/victims who have squandered their lives.

Fast forward to February 28th, and Sen. McCain announces his candidacy for president on Letterman, saying Americans "are very frustrated, and they have every right to be. We've wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives, over there."

What does Michelle say?

http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006968.htm

Nothing.  scratchchin

The right-wing machine? Veritable crickets.

Where's our apology?

Well, Obama, today was trying to clarify McCain's statement. I think he's referring to lack of troop strengths in the Iraq war. I mean, he is one of the hawks on the war, so I think we can infer it was a poor choice of words, like Obama. But, McCain numbers are trailing Guiliani by 14 pts. He needs to tread lightly and choose better words to get his point across.

Not quite.

Even FOX - the uber-right wing news - called him on it.

Quoting AeroWesty (Thread starter):

Screw that.

Obama's context was entirely different, you know and anyone with any sense knows it.

I disagree with the term used in EITHER context, because we haven't WASTED any lives.

Were you going to mention the part where Sen. McCain retracted and apologized, or were you only going to mention HALF the story. Of course, we wouldn't want to post it all now would we . . . . might make the point moot, eh.  wink

See all I've seen so far is a correction, no one demanding an apology. It was the same word used in the same context, but no apology.

What does Michelle say?

Of course its a double standard..I remember flipping channels a couple of years ago, still remember Ann Coulter call Rumsfield the best SOD this country ever had, and just last week Sen. McCain stated he thought Rumsfield was one of if not the worst SOD. Where was the right regarding this comment?

Should be fun to watch McCain get a round of the Flip-Flop machine, provided any of the candidates are up for it. And this ain't the first time he was against something before he was for it - had a list somewhere that had been compiled on a Liberal forum, but I kinda lost it Big grin

Even though I don't agree with him on everything, I've liked McCain, and certainly have to respect his contribution to the nation. I'm a bit concerned that we're not going to be holding him to the same standards as all the other candidates. When these kinds of statements come up, it shouldn't matter who said it, it should be dealt with equally.

Colmes is Hannity's whipping boy, gives the appearance of Fair and Balanced. Greta is obnoxiously ignorant, couldn't hack it at CNN so she bailed out. Ever met her, I have. Not as bad as that nancy grace twit, but bad enough. Geraldo is a has been - perhaps a "never was" - couldn't find a secret compartment and couldn't keep his trap shut in a combat zone.

He wears tight jeans when reporting in the field. Then puts some object below the waist line so the camera has to pan down.

Can you dispute Colmes is not Hannity's lackey?

Can you dispute Greta couldn't report her way out of the ladie's room? She only has this job because of the OJ trial.

And Jeraldo, you're kidding, right? He blew it in Iraq while being imbedded. Did he not?

Dispute any of the above three points.

ANC, my original point was that FOX is NOT "uber-right wing." I could care less if Geraldo is a retard or Greta is a failure, or that Colmes can't defend himself. That's besides the point, and does not make them any less LIBERAL. I am saying that FOX has many liberal Democrats on every single day and each one gets a fair chance to present their viewpoint. FOX is not the "uber-right wing news" source that some make it out to be.

Wrong, STLGph.

The same words were spoken, but with completely different contexts. McCain screwed up his words - not exactly a rare thing with him. He's since retracted his statement and apologized.

Obama said his words with intention, and he stands by them.

Quoting http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2007/03/sweet_blog_special_mccain_join.html:

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator John McCain today released the following
statement regarding U.S.troops in Iraq:

"Last evening, I referred to American casualties in Iraq as wasted. I
should have used the word, sacrificed, as I have in the past. No one
appreciates and honors more than I do the selfless patriotism of
American servicemen and women in the Iraq War. We owe them a debt we
can never fully repay. And America's leaders owe them, as well as the
American people, our best judgment and honest appraisal of the progress
of the war, in which they continue to sacrifice.

Do you see an apology in there? I don't. I see a correction.

Isn't my states senator such great man............no.....not now...still waiting....yeah no. He enjoys flip flopping on so many subjects like abortion, the war in Iraq which I remember just a few days ago as being something like just and just needs some minor kinks worked out, and now it is wasting Americans. This man just ignores what he said before and will say whatever necessary to win more votes. He just watches what we say, and then goes on TV and says what we want him to. I don't think any of us really know his own views because they change so much.

Correct, however you seem to be missing the fact that things get a little different with speech on live TV in front of everyone.

Not everyone may be so quick to realize their mistakes, others may realize they screwed up but choose to continue speaking with hopes that nobody caught their error, and when you say so many words in front of so many people, you're bound to make more mistakes unless you're completely comfortable with it, and I'd say that the vast majority of people are not.

Letterman is taped around 6pm, if I'm not mistaken. The Tonight Show used to be taped at 5:30pm on the dot during the Carson years. His handlers should have caught it, and a statement could have been issued prior to the broadcast.

There's simply no excuse for no apology to have been issued by now.

Correct, however you seem to be missing the fact that things get a little different with speech on live TV in front of everyone.

Letterman is not live tv.

i work in television. i know about flubbing up on the air. live.

Quoting NWA742 (Reply 40):
Not everyone may be so quick to realize their mistakes, others may realize they screwed up but choose to continue speaking with hopes that nobody caught their error, and when you say so many words in front of so many people, you're bound to make more mistakes unless you're completely comfortable with it, and I'd say that the vast majority of people are not.

yeah, sure, but as i said, it's ok for McCain to apologize later and still be a savior but it doesn't apply to anybody else. dont worry, we understand your logic here.

Quoting NWA742 (Reply 40):
I really don't understand what you just said, but...........okay.

Well, live if you count the audience.  Wink

The point still stands, however.

When did I say such a thing, or are you tossing words into my mouth?

And you'd be wrong.

It seems that both Obama and McCain screwed the pooch on their use of words - I saw right wingers attack Obama and I saw them attack McCain for it. No big deal here.

Obama said his words with intention, and he stands by them.

Oops.

Obama continued to explain, "It is not at all what I intended to say, and I would absolutely apologize if any (military families) felt that in some ways it had diminished the enormous courage and sacrifice that they'd shown."

It seems that Obama retracted his statement as well, I didn't know that either.

Oops.
