Your Country's Best Ever Leader?

Sat Mar 03, 2007 6:50 am

As there´s a thread about your worst ever leader , I thought maybe an opposite thread would be interesting
Your Country's Worst Ever Leader? (by Mbj-11 Feb 24 2007 in Non Aviation)

So in your opinion who was the best ever leader of your country ?

IMO in Germany it was Willy Brandt , he was a friend of my father so I know pretty much about him and I think he was an incredible person !

yours ?

I might be a little too young, but for me it would actually be Helmut Schmidt.... closely followed by Willy Brandt...

from a historical point of view Helmut Kohl would come to mind as well... the German as well as the European Unity are largely his merit... unfortunately he made some really bad decisions as well (especially when it comes to economy) so he doesn't really deserve this honor...

I'd have to say Konrad Adenauer when it comes to postwar Germany. As the first Federal Chancellor of Germany, he had a lot to do, and eventually accomplished a lot. He certainly had his flaws, but he has done a lot for our country, and made us respectable again.

However, looking back at when Germany was still a monarchy ruled by the Kingdom of Prussia, I'd have to say Emperor Wilhelm I. and Imperial Chancellor Otto Fürst von Bismarck (aka the Iron Chancellor) would be the best leaders of Imperial Germany. Bismarck was instrumental in convincing then King Wilhelm of Prussia to unite all other German states into one nation ruled under one Emperor for all Germans. They in a way laid the foundation for our current German nation, a nation which mostly held together despite having gone through The Great War and later abdication of Wilhelm II, the ups and downs of the Weimar Republic, the brutality and atrocities of the Third Reich, and the separation of East and West.

Fredrik Reinfeldt, did save Sweden from the evil Socialdemocrats.

In Cuba and Venezuela everybody has food , see for example "el mercal " in Venezuela food for everybody at low prices ...
In Cuba there´s no illiteracy and everyone has health care , many Europeans go to Cuba for operations ...

I see you have no clue.... El Mercal is just a joke that sells old and bad quality food (mostly just very basic food) and you have to wait hours in the line... really a great "shop"....

just a question, did you ever visit a mercal ?.... I assume not...

I have to agree. I would even go so far as to say that Adenauer was the best German leader of modern times. He had a huge impact on German politics which Brandt did not have. Maybe Brandt was the nicer fellow, but we are talking about leaders. Bismarck on the other site had also some negative impacts on German history like the fateful weak role of the imperial German parliament.

well quite a few Venezuelans live in GVA and others that actually live in VZL. Either because their parents work for the UN or have worked for the embassy. some people I know are also very fortunate such as the Figueredo's whose father was a close friend of Carlos Andrés Pérez.
Ok there may not be people in ranchos who like him but I'm sure people in ranchos are most of the 62% of the people that have voted for Chavez !

I remember the culture of charity in Germany... not. There may have been a welfare state once, but I'm sure glad I left the country before Hartz IV.

And anybody who suggested Kohl as a great leader.... ROFL. The man was lucky that he ruled West Germany, when the people in East Germany dared to get rid of their government. Apart from that, he laid the foundation for many of the social ills of post-unification Germany, and a new German capitalism that denies its responsibilities for society as a whole.

For me General PERON was the best ever leader in Argentina. But no doubt that EL CHE GUEVARA and EVA PERON were two nominated as well but the destiny was against them
Saludos LHStarAlliance and
Hasta la victoria siempre !

Yeah sure Please. Peron harmed this country more than it benefitted it. He created a generation of lazy ass bumps that want to live off the money of the Government, and therefore they can be used as political bait. Those were all sinister characters in Argentine History.

I'm in between two, Julio Argentino Roca and Carlos Pellegrini.

For Canada:

I think almost without question, Pierre Eliot Trudeau...

Good Work, Man, You Stole my Answer! Smile I agree with that. He was an excellent leader for our country, and personally I think his son will make another good leader in the future! Wink

I think Mackenzie King and Wilfrid Laurier deserve some real consideration. While Trudeau essentially made Canada what it is today, demographically, he neglected the economic details essential to running a modern nation, and slowly started us down the deficit road that 'Smilin Brian' accelerated (didn't want to use the other term...). The Constitution & Charter are very big, with the caveat that Quebec still has not signed on, and changing the Constitution is pretty difficult, so are we further ahead with the 1982 version vs. the original BNA Act ? With the Charter I think we are, btw.

I think Lester B. Pearson was, by far, the best Prime Minister of Canada.

I think he was a mediocre PM, but a very good Foreign Minister. He did get a Nobel Peace Prize after all. But as PM all I can remember basically was the flag & bilingualism -- which was gonig to happen anyway. Some pension reform as well. Overall a decent guy, though.

Abraham Lincoln...by a long shot. Reagan doesn't even come close.
