Switzerland Is The Top Railway User In The World

Sat Mar 03, 2007 11:23 am

It's Switzerland week on the Non-Aviation forum, so here is my thread about this beautiful nation and one of its many accomplishments.  Smile

The Swiss are the #1 users of railways in terms of average distances traveled and #2 in the world after Japan in terms of average number of trips taken.

http://www.swissinfo.org/eng/front/d...105&sid=7534759&cKey=1171615385000

I think the Swiss Federal Railways, SBB CFF FFS, is the best railway company in Europe and certainly the best that I've traveled on!

This would undoubtedly be because their railways are quick, competitively priced and very, very easy to use. It literally seems to run like clockwork! They have a great network as well, which is still expanding - in comparison with other countries such as the UK; where the total length of the railway network has, until a few years ago, been in a steady decline since the middle of the last century.

Always a pleasure to ride on and photograph Swiss trains.

checkmark  Agreed! I dare say I prefer it to air travel by a wide margin.  biggrin

And as far as I'm concerned, the Re 460 is still just as modern and beautiful as the day it was debuted.  Smile

Yes they are definitely. They are so good that people get pissed off when they just have 5 minute delay

It is true. Between big cities I prefer by fare the trains instead of going by car. You don't have the stress with the traffic and stupid car drivers and it is much less dangerous (although Switzerland is one of the countries in the world with the fewest car accidents and causalities in the world). Between Zurich and Bern for example the train takes 58 min and runs every half an hour. The ride by car takes at least 75 min.

It's based on averages which is then put in proportion with other countries; both the average total distance travelled by a Swiss person in one year, and the average numbers of journeys they make. Whilst there might be a huge population in India, the majority of them will not travel anywhere due to various reasons, so hence the averages are lower.

SBB has just announced to raise ticket prices again (I already find it very expensive). They will raise ticket prices more than 3% on average and up to 7% on the top routes such as Zurich-Bern/Basel/Geneva.  Sad

of course ! it is PER CAPITA and not in total. Otherwise every inhabitant of Switzerland had to be enroute per train 22 hours per day.  rotfl

Back in the 60's ,traveling with a group of college students, I was given the job of buying rr tickets for the group for a trip from Geneva to Ingleheim (SP?) . I had a little trouble communicating...trying my French and German..but the railroad
ended up giving us an observation car of our own! Will never forget the trip down the lake at sunset..

sure, sure --- but that would NOT be "near the Lake of Geneva", not even by US-American standards !  rotfl
and similar places in the Alsace and in Baden-Wuerttemberg and elsewhere, but my guess is Interlaken !

Third time I've typed this..the site "ate" the other two...
The village I was thinking of..and I had to drag out an atlas and magnifying glass to find it..is Villeneuve..Ingleheim was the village in Germany where we had an apartment and some of us stayed. The aunt of the professor who was leading the trip
lived there in what I call a villa...bronze doors from rome..indoor fountains..and flags of the various Swiss Cantons dating
back, we were told, to the time of Swiss confederation. The 22 of us slept....in the barn. We were starving..wandered around and found a restaurant which had a one price all-you-can-eat fresh fried fish, french fries, and salad meal. They lost a lot of money on us!! Only time I've heard of Villneuve since was watching Swiss Railroad Journies on PBS..a train passed through thge village. Good times, back in '63..think of them often...

(Now lets see if this post gets through..third time's the charm..

Pls don't rub it in! I missed the Annecy-Geneva train by 2 minutes last Thursday! I was in line buying a ticket but there were too many people before us so by the time it was my turn it had disappeared from the screens.

So we took a bus, scenic route but I get so nauseous in buses while I love trains  Cool better luck next time

well, Swiss Confederation is the official name of the country NOW. Suppose what is meant is the PRE-FrenchRevolution "old" union, possibly those days when the Vaud of today was a kind of Bernese colony still.

I absolutely love the Re 460 locomotives. Especially when they are coupled with some nice IC 2000 double deck cars.  Smile

I ate at that restaurant a few years ago. I think it was pretty good. I remember I ate fish.

It is quite close to the CGN dock, so it was nice seeing beautiful classic CGN paddle steamers such as La Suisse pulling in.

Infact, I have a photo I took somewhere...

Villeneuve is a cute town. I always make day trips to there from Montreux taking the VMCV trolleybus line (line #1).
