Montoya Wins First Nascar Race!

Mon Mar 05, 2007 9:20 am

Juan Pablo Montoya captured his first NASCAR victory in the Busch Series, at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City today.....

"Montoya spins teammate, wins Busch race"

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Juan Pablo Montoya spun teammate Scott Pruett to take the lead with eight laps left, then held off Denny Hamlin to win the Telcel-Motorola 200 for his first NASCAR Busch Series victory.
Montoya, the Colombian star who jumped from Formula One to NASCAR late last season, recovered from a bad pit stop to aggressively move from 19th to first, taking the lead when he sent Pruett's car spinning on the 72nd lap.

"I'm very sorry about what happened with Scott," Montoya said. "I thought he saw me and when he came across I had no room to go."

Pruett was clearly upset.

"Of all the people to take out - your teammate," Pruett said. "That was just lowdown, nasty, dirty driving."

Hamlin, right behind the two Chip Ganassi Racing drivers at the time, said it was a tough call.

"I wouldn't call it dirty driving, but it was a bit aggressive," Hamlin said. "Juan had the fastest car and he would have taken the lead sooner or later. He was overzealous."

Hamlin, the winner last year, pressured Monotoya in the closing laps, but couldn't pass on the 2.518-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course's s-curves.

Boris Said finished third in the race that ended with a green-white-checker finish after a late caution. Carl Edwards was fourth, and Pruett finished fifth.

"I'm really glad we won, but really upset that we took out a teammate," said Brad Parrott, Montoya's crew chief.

Montoya, who had the dominant car for the entire race, made a green-flag stop on the 45th lap, but a fuel malfunction forced him to return to the pits about 10 laps later. After a caution, he started 19th and quickly moved his way back to the front of the field.

He pretty much dominated. Congrats to him!!

I don't mean to rain on your thread here, but he won a BUSCH race. . . . hell, I could do that.

Get back to me when he wins a NEXTEL CUP race . . . in 2010 . . .

Don't mean to take back anything you say, I in part agree. Yes, it's a Busch race. But it's important in many ways for NASCAR. This guy is going to expand the sport into the Latin American community in the U.S and around the world. Did anyone think he was going to win a Busch race this early in his career? I didnt at all.

And really, most of the guys out there have done Nextel Cup, or are in it right now. He beat some great competition in this race. I give him a lot of credit.

That would also make sense if you switched that around:

"Busch spins teamate, Montoya wins race"

The Busch Series is basically like the Minor League in baseball.

You don't know what the difference between the Busch Series and Nextel Cup is, but yet you know enough to predict the champion?  Wink

I dont know, to me alot of american "sports" do not interest alot of people around the world. No insults intended, its just I see Nascar as a boring driving sport. There are way to many cars so no one has freedom, you turn left, left and left again (OK I am aware there are a very select few road courses). To me I just dont see Nascar really leaving the US, I guess people like watching crashes, because thats honestly all that really happens in those races. Nascar is not the only sport from the US that doesn't gain lots of popularity else where, such as american football (a bit of a following in Canada), and baseball. OK I am aware there is a big following in latin america, but lets face it alot of those countries really try and follow america. I guess we will see if Nascar gets a big following outside the states with JP now driving, we will see. This post was not meant to be disrespectfully in anyway to american sports, but just an observation.
Keep the shinny side up!

I knew Montoya would do well in NASCAR.. He always was good at hitting stuff, and he will have a harder time blowing motors in NASCAR... Those old antiques aren't wound quite as tight as the engines in F1.

In a way, I agree with your post. Depending on the track, I couldn't sit and watch it for four hours. If there is nothing going on, its a dry sport, if you understand what I mean. You look at F1, its fun to watch somehow, just because you dont see it a lot I guess.

As I said in my last post, I think this will influence the sport. He has a great future driving in NASCAR. I guess it just depends on if the people catch on.

Montoya qualified very near the top, he was on a road course he has raced on before (including at 15 years old!) he was aggressive, he is a very experienced road course driver and has done well on ovals too. Yes, one should be critical of his shove of his team mate and that may get the NASCAR bosses on his butt with some discipline this week. Despite a problem in the pits and losing places, he fought back with aggressiveness, experience, skills and like a man possessed and ended up beating some pretty good drivers. That he won his first NASCAR race in Mexico and on a road track is a great accomplishment and hope he continues to be competitive.

And for the most part you are right. It's my opinion, of course, but NASCAR just doesn't have the same level of international interest and flair as Formula 1. I wish Montoya success, but I'd take a seat in F1 any day over NASCAR. Now, folks often forget that he was underperforming in F1 (particularly when compared to Kimi, his teammate with the same equipment). His decision to leave F1 was partly because he knew McLaren wouldn't employ him for much longer. In any case, his presence in NASCAR will probably help the sport gain popularity in the Americas, but the more traditional racing fans (like myself) will stick to F1, Le Mans, and WRC.

Regards,

Charlie

Take the money you were saving for new servers and a new search engine and put it into sponsorship of the Airliners.Net race car. Pep will be your driver.  silly

On a side note Johan, do not let Pep run a race in LAS, I can promise you he will find something other to do in that town instead of making left turns all day.

Hitting your teammate...whether on purpose or by accident he did that in F1 a number of times!

Don''t flatter yourself. Just because the Mexico City race was lacking the big names that Busch races traditionally attract...eg. Smoke, Jr, Busch boys, etc.

I love to see controversy, glad Montoya spun his own teammate to win.

Go Hamlin!!!

NASCAR is just like any other sport in the sense that you can't just sit down and watch it for 5 minutes and understand every detail (which makes it very interesting). People start to really enjoy NASCAR generally when they start to understand the sport in detail and love one driver and want follow his progress, just as a hardcore exclusive Los Angeles Dodgers fan could not sit down and be really excited by San Francisco Giants vs Chicago Cubs game. Another excitement in NASCAR is the possibility of the "big one" especially at tracks like Talladega and Daytona where the cars are three or sometimes four wide into a corner at 190MPH when one car loses control and might take out 20 more in a wreck.

I'm happy for JPM, a win is a win. It's not 'the end of the world'. He will never be #3, but if he can get to the point of trading paint with the 20 and 24 and walking away victorious and not look like a bad guy, that will be nice.

PS. I got $5 (virtual) that he does VERY well @ Indy  Wink

Well, I don't know if he wants to take on the big dogs like that quite yet . . . wrecking your own team-mate is bad enough, but pouncing on the likes of Gordon and Stewart (and Harvick and . . . ) would be tantamount to career suicide.

Not to mention the potential ass-kickin' from Tony. Not from Gordon as he's a wuss, but Stewart wouldn't sit still for something intentional.

Now, come Bristol - everyone trades paint . . . that's a different story.

Well Montoya is no stranger to a few collisions - witness his F1 career (here on the right in the first photo)

He also memorably took out his own team mate Raikkonen at the US Grand Prix too.....

and when he was team mate to Ralf Schumacher....

I guarantee you that the first time JP pulls that "spin-and-win" shit in the Nextel Cup Series will be the last. Until he wins a race fair and square, he gets very limited props.

Even though he may be familiar with the track at Indy, he is not familiar with driving a much heavier stock car on the flat turns at Indy. If he even finishes on the lead lap, it will be outside the top 20.

Did anyone see the same race that I did?

Montoya had the inside line and did not deviate from being as tight as possible in the corner.

Pruett, it seemed to me, was on the outside of the corner and saw that he was being taken on the inside. He pulled in on Montoya's line and ultimately caused the accident. Montoya had nowhere to go as Pruett banged into him.

As for his tactics in F1, it wasn't the case yesterday.

I agree with you, but he was going to pass him anyway - got a little quick, typical for a rookie in the minor leagues.  Wink ALMOST a "racing's-racing" incident. It was just with a team mate, from a high visibility rookie, running NASCAR outside of the south, out of the country, on a weekend without the NEXTEL boys running, yada, yada, yada.... more press than substance if you ask me, feces occurs.

Yea I totally agree. I think that he had a great line going into the corner, and Scott got too far inside. Technically, it was both their faults, and luckily they both didnt get taken out. I do give a hand to Pruett though. He started back in 17th with 10 laps to go or so and got back to the top five.
