I Love Grolsch. Thank You ANCflyer.

Tue Mar 06, 2007 4:02 pm

I went to Publix today to shop for grocieries.

I was very annoyed when not only did I get the usual "Is your bday in June?" trick ID question at checkout I got a nasty surprise that they were out of my $6.29 Staropramen 6 pack. Oh well...So I had to find a replacement. Czech Budvar and Pilsner Urquell were $7.99 both so I decided to roam into the "overhyped generic beer brand and sh**a*s American beer aisle"

But wait $6.99 for a 335ml 6 pack of Grolsch. So I said, that dirty Alaskan Walrus likes it, and its dutch so I will give it a try since I havent had it in a good year and forgot what it tastes like.

So now at 1:55AM and having my homework undone as of yet I popped a ice cold Grolsch open to only find my mouth longing for more. By 2:00AM, I am already on my 3rd bottle and I am drooling more than a St. Bernard (and its not because of Downs syndrome!)

So yes here it is to Grolsch!

P.S. I hate Publix, I only saved $1.04 on $40 of grocieries according to the checkout monitor...and those nazis asked me why I was buying such expensive beer.

Post here what fine brew you are drinking tonight!

Grolsch and Pilsner Urquell?? I could have told you that!!

A couple of times when we felt wealthy I had those under a tiki hut, along with my best friend, his friend and these two hot girls... talking for hours and hours through the muggy summer nights. Some of the best times I ever had.

Oh God, there is again football tonight and tomorrow, looks like a drunk week to me but that is good, I have to be in training for the next weekend.  Wink Big grin

And yes, Grolsch is quite ok, definitely better than Heineken.

Only Grolsch (pils/lager) and the occasional San Miguel make it to our 'fridges. And Grolsch has done for twenty odd years  snooty  Only bottles, no cans. None of that Heineken/Amstel/Bavaria/Hertog Jan muck here.

I am doing fridge maintenance tonight, because it is my night off. So I will be drinking 2 heinikens and 2 or so Shiner Bocks.. Even though Shiner gives me the shits. Thankfully I don't have to be anywhere until 5:00pm tomorow. Come to think of it.. I don't even like beer at all.. But I am too cheap to dump the shit out.

If you can ever get your hands on a Grolsch Kanon you must really try it. It is one of their special editions, and really nice. Might be a bit more expensive though, especially abroad.

The Publix I go to is miles better than the Kroger, the Food Depot and the Little Giant (Small Local chain) that are closer to me than the nearest Publix (They closed the Publix closest to me back in the Fall still miffed about that). Plus there's a branch of my bank inside of the Publix, so I can kill two birds with one stone. If I don't feel like driving the extra 5 miles (and fighting the Hwy 138 traffic) to the nearest liquor store, I'll buy my beer (and wine) at Publix. Very rarely are they out of Sam Adams Boston Lager or Sweetwater 420 when I go in there (Beer section has been freshly stocked that morning.).

I've never had any of the clerks at the Publix I go to ask that. Of course I've known some of the folks that work at that location for years, as I worked at that store for about three years back in the mid-to-late 90s. Some of them are surprised when I'm not buying any beer (There were nights back when I was working there when I was buying a six pack nearly every night I worked.).

It all started with Bouncers. When people started using friend's IDs because it became too hard to fake them, one of the ways people would try and catch a fake ID user would be to ask random questions like Zodiac sign, address, birthday, etc.

It really depends on where you're at, because the laws regarding beer vary from state to state.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol...laws_of_the_United_States_by_state

You have some states where the max % of alcohol allowed in beer is 3.2% (Might as well stick to water); others a more generous 6%, while some cap it at around 14-16%.

Here in Georgia, they finally upped the max % a couple years back from 6% to 14% and as a result a slew of new beers (some from breweries that already sold their sub-6% offerings and some from breweries that had never offered their products here [mainly because some of them wanted to offer their full range of beers, not just the handful that were under 6%]) have arrived here. One can go into a really good liquor store and find that the beer selection now makes up about half of the shelf space in the store (Used to be a quarter to a third of the space, and interestingly enough, the stores have ended up reducing the size of their wine section as a result.). Gone are the days when folks would travel to a state where some really good beers were sold (but not here due to the 6% law) and bring back a suitcase or a car trunkful of these beers that were illegal here (I've done it, but on a small scale, usually a few bottles).

One bad aspect of the alcohol laws here is that everything has to be distributed through a distributor (the only loophole is for wineries that run their own shops) so there really aren't any exclusive alcoholic beverages, nor can a brewery have on-premise sales (I'd love to live somewhere in which you can go down to the local microbrewer and pick up a growler to go). When Trader Joe's came to the Atlanta area, their famous Two Buck Chuck couldn't be sold until the company agreed to let it be distributed by one of the distributors (many of whom are buddies with the important lawmakers) and made the brand available to other stores. There's been several microbreweries that have gone under because their distributor was primarily a wine and spirits distributor and really didn't push the brewery to its' accounts. What's odd now is that the same company no distributes what is considered to be the predominant "microbrewery" in the US.

What's wrong with this alcohol content? Alcohol is measured m/m in the USA, 3.2 % m/m would translate somewhere to 4.8 % V/V. That happens to be the alcohol content of most European beers (except some specialty high-octane brews)

I'm not sure if you mean alcohol is measured by mass in the US....but I just went and looked at a bottle of Sierra Nevada, and it clearly says "Alcohol 5.6% by Volume"

I seem to remember seeing "by volume" on many American beers (or beers sold in the US).
