Advice With Overclocking

Wed Mar 07, 2007 6:22 am

I currently have a 1.7 AMD 2500+ Processer and I want to upgrade it somehow as Its not as high as it could be, I am considoring overclocking but I don't have a clue how to do it, I don't know the risks and weather or not my processer will allow me to do this.

Has anyone got any advice for me!?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, don't do it unless you have the money for and are willing to replace it without a second thought.

Overclocking is really for people with lots of money that want to make a really fast CPU or GPU go faster, and know the risks.

It's not an alternative to upgrading. You'll find the difference in performance is tiny anyway (you can only overclock by a certain %, maybe 30 max).

So the thing to do Is a whole new processer?

I am good with hardware, I can fit RAM , install ROM Drives etc but overclocking sounds a bit risky as you said.

I saw a vid of someone overclocking a 2.2GHz to 5Ghz using Nitrogen as a coolent! Don't know if its real or not though

Thanks for your help !

The value of your CPU is such that it's probably more trouble than what it's worth. You may want to trade in your mainboard, video card and CPU as a tested working combo, and install a later generation set altogether.

If you have an older AMD, your motherboard is probably a socket A. I'd recommend just getting an Athlon 3200+ CPU on ebay or other such site, I have an old motherboard with socket A and I didnt' want to spend $$ getting a whole new mobo and dealing with all those issues, so I just upgraded from a 1.2 ghz AMD chip to a 2.2 ghz 3200+, I got it for $80 on Ebay a few months ago, and I literally just had to take out the old chip, put the new one in, put on some thermal paste, reattach the heatsink, and it works like a charm. MUCH faster in the various games that I play, and I don't ever really do enough CPU intensive work to need anything more like a dual core or a single core at 3 ghz+. Here's a 3200+ I found on Ebay, it seems prices have gone up since I got mine for some reason, but you can hopefully find one for a reasonable price...
