The most beautiful place I've visited is definitely the Lake Tahoe area. A friend and me spent last week there for snowboarding but we've also been there in the summer a few years ago.

Summer:

Winter:

And yes, the snow is really one of the best I've ever boarded on!

Sorry, I forgot to mention!

It is in the USA, the border of California and Nevada leads directly through the lake. Gambling is allowed in Nevada so there is also a very good nightlife thanks to the casinos, bars and clubs. The perfect mix of sport activities and partying. Big grin

Here is a map:

Closest airports are Reno and Sacramento.

The harbour and beach area of Puntarenas: apart from all the tourists walking around, the traffic jams on the highway to Puntarenas (there are no motorways to the city unless you're like 20 km/12 mi away from town, and being with your parents there, it's a great place to be. Only downside: in this time of year, it gets very hot (my guess is that when I went there two weeks ago, it must have been close to 40°C/104°F). But you can really smell the salty waters of the Pacific and have a beautiful view out when the sky is clear.

The Island of Sylt: it's very beautiful, especially when you walk on the dunes near the sea. The cities of Westerland and Lyst aren't that boring as well, there's lots to see there. You can even go on a small barge and do a small tour of the Wattenmeer. It's very amazing to see how the tide works there, because the shores of the Wattenmeer are so shallow, that during high tide, it's flooded and during low tide, you can walk through great part of what is a flooded shore line. From what I've seen, it's also a great place to go surfing, especially during the autumn. Just watch out for jellyfish there, I got stung by one of them once and the burning sensation didn't stop for hours.

Were you renting out a whole resort?? That is crazy. Are you sure you were not looking at the local currency amounts? When we went we did not spend anything like that and we stayed in one of the over the water bungalows at either the Sheraton or Inter-Continental (mixing the islands up in my mind). Food is expensive, but not that expensive.

Syria had some of the most beautiful ruins and remains I have ever seen, but overall the most beautiful would be Svalbard. Such an amazing landscape, beautiful but desolate, isolated and yet industrial. I would love to go back in the Autumn or Spring for the snow.

I very much enjoyed walking out of the Underound Station in London and having our band director say, "Now everyone look behind you" and there stood Big Ben all lit up. It was great to have read about it all my life, and then to finally see it. London at night in December was amazing. One of the best weeks of my life.

Many places in my travels are among the most beautiful places I have been.
In the USA, that would include many of the National Parks in the western USA, including Glacier (MT), Yellowstone-Grand Teaton (MT/WY) Grand Canyon (AZ), Yosemite (CA), Rocky Mountain (CO), Bryce Canyon (UT), Canyonlands (UT), Arches (UT), Crater Lake (OR), Sequoia/Kings Canyon (CO), Olympic (WA), Mt. Rainier (WA), Zion (UT). Outside of National Parks, it would include various areas of California, especially the Coastal Big Sur area; Much of Utah; the coastal, Mt. Hood and Columbia River area of Oregon, parts of northern New Mexico, Much of Colorado.
Outside of the USA, has to include most of New Zealand, especially the South Island including the Queenstown and Milford Sound areas. In Australia, when I snorkeled at the Great Barrier Reef northeast of Cains, Queenland.

I have to split my decision between several places:

1. Frasier Island (off the coast of southern Queensland, Australia). It's a world heritage site and it's just absolutely pure and beautiful.

2. Standing at the foot of the Great Teton Range in Wyoming, USA. I've never seen anything as beautiful as the mountains backlit by a full moon. It was almost spiritual.

3. Tobacco Bay, Bermuda - The sand was soft, the water was warm and there was nobody else there for an entire afternoon. My wife and I got to snorkel and lay on the beach in complete seclusion.

4. Lastly, Curacao. I went in October 2006 for my Honeymoon. I was stunned by the view from our suite every time I looked out the door. See here:

Big version: Width: 1014 Height: 768 File size: 156kb

I have no idea where I'm going next, but I hope I can add to this list.

Nassau Bahamas. Also I like the Corning, Elmira area in New York. Elmira is the perfect place for Soaring in gliders. Finally, the finger lakes region sums it up. Lots of vineyards and beautiful scenery.

A very very difficult question!

I'll pick two, one for natures buety and one for man's:

Nature: Lord Howe Island(LHI), 400 nm off the east coast of Australia, about 650nm of the west coast of NZ. Now that is isolated!!! World Hertiage listed, most southern coral reef in the world ( which possibley makes it the most unique coral reef in the world) two giant over sized mountains and wild and plant like no wherelse.

http://www.lordhoweisland.info/gallery/skeoch5.jpg

Man: Venice! From the bed of the lagoon to top of St Marks a tribute to mankinds stubbness and sheer artistic genius! (It also cheaped for most of you to visit than LHI!!!)
