Question For Uni/College Students

Fri Mar 09, 2007 7:59 am

Hey all,

I'm a 2nd year uni student studying German and Management. I'm just interested to see if other uni/college students here are doing a helluva lot of work at the moment, in the run up to the exam period. I've just finished one 1,500 word essay which was done in German, am currently working on a 2,500 word Marketing essay, then need to do 2x 2,000 German literature essays (about Goethe and Kafka) and also one more 2,000 word Strategic management essay. All this for the next 3 weeks (with at least 1 deadline each week).

Anybody else got a large amount of essays/exams to get through at the moment? Everybody at my uni is having the same problem (we couldn't have started earlier as we've only just been given the essay titles).

Ben

Right now, I have 3 essays running,

2 English papers, both a minimum or 6 pages (for a minimum grade), 8-10 pages reasonable.

1 Air Traffic Control Paper, a minimum of 4 pages.

Two are due next week, one is due in a month.

...2 exams next week, one for a computer class, the other for ground school,

...in addition, I have a Practical and Oral exam "midterm" for my Flight Course.

In approximately 2 weeks, when I am one month away from the end of the semester, all hell will break loose.

Yep, crap loads of work piling up. What's worse is that time seems to have suddenly sped up 10x and weeks are flying by,

Spring break in my American program here in Germany, but the work load to get me to April will make me sweat.

It appears I have it easy compared to you guys, but being a first year student helps in that regard.

I have an 8-10 page English paper due in 3 weeks, a Materials Science test tomorrow, a Calc 2 test in a week and a half, and a presentation about the Engineering College in 4 weeks. And I haven't started anything yet. Guess what I'm doing over spring break? Some of that, not all.

I have an 8-10 page paper due at the end of month, along with some database and spreadsheet projects. In April, I have a 2-page paper and 2 final exams then I'm done with my B.A. on May 6th. Almost over.....

I'm doing both better and worse than everyone here I think:
I have just finished my Bac blanc and I am preparing for the math and physics Concours Général.

Well....
Nice.... I had to write a 3000 word paper for journal publication which had to be re-written over and over again so the word count is actually so very misleading. Plus I fumbled up so badly that my immediate colleague has taken over it now! Sad

Then I had an exam in Fracture Mechanics today afternoon, which by the looks of it went through my system without causing any apparent damage.

Coming up next though is a presentation next week, submission of two homework assignment on Monday and Thursday respectively, another set of experiments, an exam two weeks later! Life sucks!! Sad

But then the lab group is going to go to a trip to Washington DC for a conference during spring break... that ummm... might be fun... I guess!

I've still got 6 weeks till exams, but I've got projects every week. Usually at least 3 projects assigned and due every week, along with usual book wook in 2 other classes. I know what you mean, man. Racketball, hockey, and poker night is what gets me through it.

Not especially. I go to the Degree Factory of Texas At San Antonio, where actual college work is unheard of, much like actual learning. But there are apparently a few people here overnight studying, I wrote 60 parking tickets last night out of boredom and I wasn't even being a hardass.

Its a good thing midterms haven't been that bad, we have been swamped with BS at work so I have been pulling a lot of overtime.. It is nice to have a little money.

I have quite a few papers myself. For the next 2 weeks I have:

- 7 page Psychology paper
- 5 page Ethics Philosophy paper
- 14 page Privatization of Air Traffic Control paper
- 7-11 page paper on any Aviation topic

Apart from that, I have an exam in Psychology. An exam in Ethics.

Then I have a written Stage exam for Private Pilot, followed by a Flight Stage Exam.

And a 30+ hour work week on top of all that. Yeah, college isn't all that great...

My students are zombies right now from being overloaded. I make all the final class work due a week early on purpose, because I know next week (final exam week), they're going to be struggling even worse.

These 11-week terms (we're on a quarter system) are rough that way.

Currently kicking out a paper on U.S.-Iraqi relations in the Saddam Hussein era for my U.S. Foreign Policy class. Should be a miserable weekend.

I suppose the beer will taste that much better come Tuesday night...

Press on, scholars!  Wink

Rather than tallying words and pages, the university culture here in Finland places emphasis on disposition and clarity. Your work will receive good marks if it is a well-conceived one that keeps to its thesis, and meets the technical criteria on citing and similar.

And that is why it amazes me we have so many international students at colleges in the US. Our educational experience consists of memorizing crap from lecture notes and textbooks only to puke them back onto a test, or into a paper in condensed form. Any creative thinking is punished, severely.

Environmental consulting I only have a group (which is the entire class as one group) environmental assessment due as our final (no test), My instructional design in aviation class (for those of us that don't want to be CFI's) have 1 more test and the final, all have been take home right out of the FOI book so I have 100% on all those (final will be take home too). Weather for aircrews I have 1 or 2 more tests and an international weather brief as our final (once again no final test). So as of right now, my finals week will consist of NO finals! HOORAY for being a senior flight student!!!

I just finished my doctoral thesis, containing 20000 words and 93 pages! Congrats to me!

Seriously, I have to spend a few days off the computer right now. I hate my keyboard, my dysfunctional mouse, my fingers, my laboratory, etc.

Kafka

Good luck with that. I studied Kafka in high school, and it nearly killed me. I draw the line where literature causes more stress and anxiety than it alleviates.

Anyways, I have exams every five weeks or so, in the form of papers with essay questions, and we get four days to complete them at home. The next one is coming up in another two weeks or so, and I got done with my previous one at the end of February. It's usually pretty heavy stuff, but the course I'm taking now, Human Rights 101, is pretty weird and easy. The last exam was on international law and humanitarian law, and the questions for the paper were pretty much regular test questions, for example: "When did the Vienna Convention on Treaty Law come into effect for Finland if the country signed the convention in 1978?" Well, the convention did not come into effect at all until 1980, so there's your answer. Silly, just silly.

So I don't believe I'll be working very hard at all this semester, which suits me perfectly.  silly

Cheers
Mats

Good on you bud, hope to join you later in the year but at the moment I have just finished the latest editions of a 59 slide presentation and 57 page (13621 word) final report for the people who fund my project.

In my last few months of an Engineering degree, it's so much much work!

I'm working up to 10 hrs a day 7 days a week and still not keeping up with the work.

I got 3 exams at the end of all this too in may! At least I'll be free for the summer, as most graduate jobs start in october or November, I'll only work part time probably then just to have money to buy some stuff.
