Wonderful One Hit Wonder?

Fri Mar 09, 2007 11:21 pm

So many good one hit wonders to chose from, can you name your favorite(s)?

(One hit can also be counted as one-album wonder, where they had 2-3 hits on the same album and were then never heard from again)

A few that I really liked:
Fine Young Cannibals ( had a good album, that was it)

Katrina and the Waves (Which, now that I think of it, sounds ironic considering Hurricane Katrina last year.) with hte one good song.

"Laid" by James.

"Heterosexual Man" by the Odds (actually, the whole album "Bedbugs" is listenable).

"Turning Japanese" by The Vapors.

"I Got You" by Split Enz.

"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell.

"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell.

Absolute classic. I love that song.

Quoting TSS (Reply 1):
"Laid" by James.

A fantastic song. This was only a one-hit wonder in the US. James had a long career in the UK with many hit singles and high-charting albums. One of my all-time favourite bands.

You know this isn't a parody thread, right?  biggrin

As for me, I'm going to go with 'Walking in Memphis' by Marc Cohn. Strictly not a one-hit wonder in the US, but he never had much chart presence in the UK other than this song. And it's a classic.

Talk Talk had a few songs that were good. They're not one hit wonders eventhough barely.
One Night In Bangkok was created for a play in the theaters. I thought the same once, but Murray Head are not a band.

In NA Eiffel 65 with "Blue" The only thing is they had much more success if Europe, and I am still able to get some Eiffel 65 songs from Europe its a shame really they did not do any better in the NA market, instead we have "crap" like rap and that hip hop stuff.  banghead

"I Got You" by Split Enz.

Split Enz were immensely popular in Oz and NZ. "I Got You" was mainstream, but the rest of their stuff was played on alternative stations (like 91X in San Diego (back in the early 80s)).

Their album is completely brilliant from start to finish, and I agree that the one-hit wonder isn't the best song on the album. Incidentally, Gregg Alexander (the guy who founded New Radicals and sang lead vocals) is now an acclaimed producer, but has vowed never to record any of his own stuff again. Perhaps he's just the kind of person that likes to be behind the scenes and not in the spotlight.

Great song, but at least in the UK it followed up with another single that did quite well - 'Singing In My Sleep'.
