Boston lead singer Brad Delp dies at 55

03/09/2007 8:31 PM, AP

Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston, was found dead Friday in his home in southern New Hampshire. He was 55. Atkinson police responded to a call for help at 1:20 p.m. and found Delp dead. Police Lt. William Baldwin said in a statement the death was "untimely" and that there was no indication of foul play.

Delp apparently was alone at the time of his death, Baldwin said.

The cause of his death remained under investigation by the Atkinson police and the New Hampshire Medical Examiner's office. Police said an incident report would not be available until Monday.

Delp sang vocals on Boston's 1976 hits "More than a Feeling" and "Longtime." He also sang on Boston's most recent album, "Corporate America," released in 2002.

He joined the band in the early 1970s after meeting Tom Scholz, an MIT student interested in experimental methods of recording music, according to the group's official Web site. The band enjoyed its greatest success and influence during its first decade.

The band's last appearance was in November 2006 at Boston's Symphony Hall.

On Friday night, the Web site was taken down and replaced with the statement: "We just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll."

A call to the Swampscott, Mass., home of Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau was not immediately returned Friday night.

Very Sad. Boston was tied with Chicago for my favourite band of all time. That black screen over top their Website is deafening silent.

RIP Brad

PS I quite Love the Album Artwork of Boston's 6 released Albums

Very tragic news. An absolutely phenomenal vocalist, he defined the Boston sound along with the pipe organ and guitar riffs.

They have one of the best selling debut albums of all time and there was a time in '75 and '76 when you could find "More Than A Feeling" or "Longtime" playing on an FM station just about 24/7. They were huge....

RIP Brad, you will be missed...

I guess I slept through this one...

Well, we shall see.

I just downloaded their catalog on MP3.

I have mixed emotions. Boston is a 'mega' band, yet their body of work is remarkably small. I guess it could be argued that they did better whole albums then albums with mostly crap and a few hits. I still would have liked to have seen more then an album every 7 years or so. His death obviously ends any hope for Boston to get 'bigger' but I guess it's just as well.

Am I the only one who notices that many vegans and vegetarians don't generally look as healthy? Something about the skin maybe........?

His "balls-in-a-vise" voice has never been duplicated. No one's come close.

For me, Boston sort of defined growing up in the 70s.

It's hard to believe he was only in his mid 20s during that time.

RIP

This is a tragedy for old-time rock music. I liked his voice and their stuff. Like Ted remarked, their catalogue was rather small. In the 15 years after they put out their debut, they only had 3 albums. On the album Third Stage, the had this long drawn out explanation for why it took so long to get the 3rd album out. In the early 1990's, Brad and Barry did the RTZ project, (Return to Zero, which ironically summed up the sales of this album) without Tom Scholz while Boston was on hiatis. It is a day in music to lose another great voice.

Their concert in Baton Rouge back in the late 80's as a part of the Third Stage tour was probably the best concert I've ever been to.....that album is one of my favorites. It's one of the few that I first bought for my turntable, then scooped up a cassette tape for the car, finally a CD when I got really technologically advanced.

RIP, Brad...

I still have the record (i.e. vinyl) of their first album (in which 3 of the above-listed songs came from). It was one of the first rock-n-roll record albums I bought back in '76.

During a brief period in the 1980s, band member, Fran Sheehan owned a small restaurant in neighboring Marblehead called the Custom House. The restaurant lasted about 5 years. The building presently another restaurant; it was Jacob Marley's during the '90s.
