Share A Bookmarked Website.

Sun Mar 11, 2007 1:06 am

With every member having other interests outside of aviation and visit a variety of websites (All Airliners.net and nowhere else makes Johnny a dull boy), I thought I'd start a thread where we'd each post a website we have bookmarked in our browser. Some of us may find a new favorite site as a result. A few rules before we start:

1. No personal websites. No need to be an attention whore. Same goes for MySpace/Facebook/etc.
2. No NSFW websites. Besides most of the A.net pervs have their favorite NSFW sites...
3. Non-Aviation please. If you want to post a thread on favorite aviation sites, start a thread over in Polls/Preferences.
4. Do not post just a link. Give a brief description of the site and why it's one of your favorite sites.

I'll start with Atlanta Time Machine It's mainly a then and now photo site where this guy has gone through old photos in the archives @ Georgia State University and has then gone and taken a photo of the same spot as it presently stands. There are also with some of the locations, old ads associated with businesses that once occupied that building. As a lifelong Atlantan, I found the site interesting not only because of my interest in history, but also because in quite a few cases, some of these old buildings are either gone or are threatened with demolition. Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone (Probably the only time you'll ever see me paraphrasing Joni Mitchell).

So, this is the summer camp I went to in Northern Michigan, at the time it was co-ed, now it's all girls.

We are having an "all year" reunion in September.

Now that's a great site  thumbsup

Wish we had something like that for the greater Miami / Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area.

That would be correct. NSFW=Not Safe For Work.

Quoting KFLLCFII (Reply 3):

That's quite an interesting site there. When I get a chance, I really spend some time delving deeper (I took a look around a few of the sections).

I'm trying to rack my brain on how I discovered Atlanta Time Machine. I think it was off of the forums of a local scooter club. There's some very interesting sites listed in the links section of the site that do a similar type then and now in Birmingham, Chicago, NYC, Paris, and scenes in S.F. from the film "Vertigo".

CAP is the official civilian auxiliary to the United States Air Force with over 64,000 members. It performs 95% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief, and counter-drug missions. Members take a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the almost 27,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP has been performing missions for America for more than 60 years.

It's like a weather forecast, only instead of weather it forecasts the Aurora Borealis. My experience has been it's not super accurate, but for the most part it gives you a pretty good idea of whether or not it's worth staying up and looking.

The page shows a long term forecast (for the next 30 days or so), a short term forecast (the next hour), a map of where it should be visible from (weather permitting), and a rating on a scale from 0-9 of how active it should be.

Other than my own website (which is a specialized chat room), I've been spending at least two hours a day at http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/index.php, which is the forum for a piece of software that I've fallen in love with since I found it, and have become the second most frequent poster there...I was a mainframe programmer in COBOL for 20+ yrs and it's quite rare to find an application that I am able to have an impact on just by participating in their forum...I have NO financial interest whatsoever in this product/site, but have spend hundreds of hours there helping out others and assisting in beta testing, and such.

The request was for bookmarked sites that we use, and given that I spend more time there now than here, I thought I'd post it...and as I vaguely recall, it may have been an A.net post that pointed me to that software.

http://www.smartcomputing.com/

For all you computer nerds (yours truly included). For around $12 a year, you can subscribe to this excellent computer magazine (web version only - $29 for the print and web version). My main reason for subscribing is their Q&A board. This chat board alone has saved me easily hundres of dollars in computer repairs and/or tech support charges. Most recently, it saved me about $150 when I was prepared to have the Geek Squad come out and troubleshoot a problem I was having with my router. Just prior to scheduling a home visit with them, I posted my problem on the Smart Computing Q&A board. Within 45 minutes, I had a very detailed response from another subscriber with the solution to the problem I was having. It's a give and take scenario where subscribers are encouraged to respond to questions posted as well as post any questions they have have about computers or technology. More times than not, you can find the answer you're looking for just by doing a search on previous questions asked. One thing I especially like is the board is very well policed by the magazine editors and personal attacks (ie: "what a stupid question"), rude language, and sarcastic responses are not tolerated.

It's a collection of butchered English translations, mostly from Asia. You'd think that the translators might be a little better educated, but I don't mind, as long as it stays this funny.

I always like www.boatnerd.com It has all the info you need about shipping on the great lakes. It is a lot like a.net but not as big. Great info about ships, shipping, and news about the great lakes. For those of you not familiar they are Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Michigan.

Many of the ships on these lakes are rather old. The international ships (salties) are cool, but some of the US ships are from the 1950s back to the 1920s. A new laker would be from the 1970s. The oldest on the lakes is the St. Marys Challenger, which has been steaming, yes steaming, since 1906. The first to make it 100 years on the lakes. The fresh water keeps them clean. Technology catches up with the ships before time. I used to give tours on the S.S. Willis B. Boyer which was in service for 69 years.
