Who Still Got Messed Up By New Daylight Savings?

Mon Mar 12, 2007 1:37 am

Yeah, I blew it this morning. Had my clocks all set. That lack of an extra hour did it for me. I usually go to services in the A.M., and I missed the first part (S.S.). Who else felt it this morning?

I was right hung over this morning, but, when I did eventually wake up, I noticed that my BlackBerry is all screwed up, I guess I'll have to fix that later. I felt like crap from the hangover, not the DST.
It may be too early to drink scotch... But it is NEVER too early to think about it...

Boy did I ever!  tired  One hour makes a lot of difference when one, such as myself, doesn't get much sleep during a normal night.
I lift things up and put them down.

The US Congress decided that they should try moving the switch to Daylight Savings earlier this year, so that people would have less need to use their lights later in the day, and thus saving energy (or so they think). I do think it has a chance to actually work, but we'll have to see. Anyways, Daylight Savings starts early in the US this year and ends late.

Since I had nothing to do today, I didn't get screwed over.

Yeah. This sucked.

Took the wife for a drive last night and ended up taking her to work in my car which meant I had to pick her up @ 0700 this morning. Now if I had gone to sleep shortly after dropping her off, this would have been fine, but I ended up staying up until midnight last night re-doing my computer because of two 'failed' hard drives that were perfectly fine. So I was up till midnight, then awake at the equilivent of 0500. After we got home I took a 3 hour nap and am better.

Yes Hannah but the Americans decided to change it this year. There is apparently a survey being done to determine the effect, if any, on energy usage of this earlier time change.

Oh and people, the correct term is daylight saving time.

Thanks for the info ! As I have to take it into account when doing phone-calls to the USA. But overhere it looks as this :
-
Umstellung auf die Sommerzeit: Sonntag 25. Mrz 2007 von 02.00 Uhr MEZ auf 03.00 Uhr MESZ
-
so that there still are 14 days to go !

never forget the Atlantic Ocean ! In Europe it IS 25th March ! All planners at airlines love this discrepancy. Why NOT unify the change onto 18th March ??  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Confused  scratchchin

the term is acceptable in English whenever "Summer-Time" is shorter ! But in German the translation would be
"Tageslicht-Ersparnis-Zeit" or in French "le temps a epargner de clarte du jour" !  Big grin

I woke up and the clock said 11:49am. Which was late to begin with. Then I realized I forgot to change the time and it was really 12:49pm. It ruined my whole day.

and that's Pula-SKEYE not Pula-ski. ;p

it really was screwed up there. i love Central Time and was all for it, but so the county is quite divided ... as many work down in Lafayette or in Monticello and those towns were all on Eastern Time.

it was really kind of crazy trying to arrange gatherings with friends and what not, etc. anything posted had to have central or eastern behind it to clarify for the locals.

there were several school districts that lied in two time zones.

it was quite nice because when we wanted to venture up from the lake to go play 18 holes, we could be lazy and leave later in the day and hit up the twilight golf special.

i can't imagine changing times two hours though ... that just really sucks. they should have done one hour one week and then the next rather than all at once.

I know but that don't make it right now does it?  Wink

Just to be pedantic.....

The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Similar examples would be a mind expanding book or a man eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, but it is not as politically desirable.

Went to bed last night knowing I did not have to do squat with any of our clocks. One of the reasons I live in Arizona. No Daylight Saving Time. Ever. That and everything worked. No tech problems that so many thought would happen. At least not here.

Ok here's a question for you, I fly to the states next week.

I arrive at my "gateway" airport at 13:55 from MAN, will I now in fact arrive at 14:55??

This is confusing.

You should arrive at the time it says. 1355. Your flight should be leaving an hour earlier from MAN.

correct IF the airline is a US airline. If it is a European airline, it will depart on the same time in MAN and arrive an hour "later" in the USA which would be 1 4 . 55 . But even this has to be checked, as some flights of European air carriers are adopted to the destination-country for a variety of reasons.

OK cheers, the airline actually needs to tell me this then, and as yet they havent.

The reason I ask is that I have an onward connection at 1615. I dont want an hour wiped off my transit time, lol  Wink

OK, here we go, found my answer, the flight schedules are already adjusted to the new time zone.

Until yesterday my flight departed the UK at 11am (5am US), from today it leaves at 10am - (6am US).

Add 8 hours to that and I get 2pm, lol. So my flight scherdule IS correct after all.

I need to wake up, lol.

No need to wake up, you were just trying to stay ahead of the govenment (the ones that control DST) game. No one ever wins in that one. Glad you found the right times, though. Better to be an hour early, than an hour late.

As for the five fights that I am flight following today, I have been planning the change for the last month.

I was in instrument groundschool awhile back in OAK and the instructor was talking about time zones. I casually let him know that Arizona does not change their times because he didn't mention it. He then told me that that would be ridiculous and that I was wrong. He proceeded to laugh at me. I am still traumatized to this day.  Wink
