Tax Refund: What Are You Going To Spend It On?

Tue Mar 13, 2007 2:33 am

So it turns out that the missus and I will be getting a larger-than-expected refund this year (total, federal and state) - the biggest refund we've ever had and an indication that I need to get a new tax man as he clearly figured my estimated payments wrong for the year (although I'd rather pay too much than too little). The state refund hit the checking account today, so hopefully federal won't be too far behind...

The wife has been wanting a new car for a while, so this will make up a nice chunk of the down payment.

Who out there is getting a refund this year and what are you spending/saving/investing plans for it?

I got mine in early February or so, a whopping €108. Big grin I spent it on two very nice days in Hamburg.

When I get one, I'll tell you. This year, I'm shelling out more to the taxman (why they need more from me, I'll never know.. I only made pretty much the same I made last year)..

We sent 1/3 to the retirement fund, 1/3 to the mortgage, and 1/3 to charitable giving. Next year I will once again try and break even, no refunds, but no paying in either.

This year will be the first year I will be owing money to the Feds. I'll get a refund from the State of NM, but only $5, so I think I'll go ahead and get that ream of paper for my printer I've had my eye on lately.  Wink

I've never owed to the feds, but I owed $70 to the state last year. My father-in-law never calculates his tax right and ends up owing to both fed and state every year.

Well considering that after getting my refund from the Feds, I've got to turn right around and give nearly all of it to the State, not a thing. You really can't buy much for $1 these days. Actually coming out practically even is where you really want to be come tax time since a refund is really nothing more than money you loaned the gov't.

Tell him to use computer software. You can download some for free. That way he won't screw up!

Alternatively my wife will do them for him for a nominal fee!

Mine will go towards paying off at least one of my credit cards.

Well, it's not quite as simple as that. He has his own business and attempts the 'corporate tax' thing himself. Plus he's involved with various non-profit organizations and gets a bunch of complex write-offs for this and that associated with that, and he's a PD chaplain so gets some kind of break for doing that as well etc. I've told him to use my tax guy (the one I use for all my corporate tax dealings) as he'd cut him a good rate, but he's got more pride than he knows what to do with  biggrin

Now....that's something worth having. I had a CIJ Tele thinline for a while and it was very nice....the quietest pickups around but still nice and bright...I am not a fan of humbuckers. You just gotta stay away from the fluorescent lights and have a good shielded cable.

Frankly I am surprised at y'alls. You're all giving the government short term financing at no cost....why?

Here's what I learned about all this. I used to be like youse.

Then my ex grabbed my return, about $800, because I was behind in support. So after that the guy I had do my taxes asked me "why are you doing this? Take the money you were withholding, put it in the bank, and pay the feds when tax time comes around." So I dialed it back, and the next year I got back $15.

I have two part time jobs and two side businesses.. So here's what I do. I take every check I get, and toss it in a bank account that I never look at. Then when tax time comes around, I figure out what I owe and write out a check. The surplus goes to pay down consumer debt and student loan debt we've been carrying ever since I got out of school. In the past five years we've paid off pretty near thirty thousand in debt that way and made some money in interest, and we also funded a second business startup.

But you ask," gee, Sparky! What do you do about your quarterly estimated tax payments?"

I don't bother with them. This year the penalty for NOT doing them is $59.....that's right, fifty nine dollars. I'll pay that any time to avoid doing income tax returns every three months....I'd rather drive nails in my head with a hammer.

And that $59? It would get you about 35 minutes of my time if you was to pay me.

I use Tax Cut software and it's very easy to figure.

You'd best have a good amp to maximize that sucker. My usual go to amp is a silverface Princeton Reverb. It's ugly and nasty but I have plans for it....I'm planning making it into a Princeton Boogie but leaving the exterior just as it is.

Very true. Considering that I don't have a guitar amp, it'll probably be awhile before I actually get to play the thing on a regular basis. Maybe I'll just run it through my bass cab... yuck

Sometimes I run my '74 Fender Mustang through my bass rig (Gallien-Kreuger 700RB with a 4x10 and a 1x15 w/ coaxial tweeter), and with chorus it sounds OK. If you have a distortion pedal it helps.

I've never tried it with a distortion pedal before...that probably does help. It sounds pretty hideous if I do it right now.
