Rant: Do You Use Your Indicators?

Tue Mar 13, 2007 4:18 am

I just got done running errands and was noticing that indicators (blinkers, turn signals, whatever you call them) must not be standard equipment, judging by how many people don't use them. WTF?? It was standard equipment on my truck, I assume they would be in other vehicles (note sarcasm).

I use them 100% of the time, because I don't want to be the "a**hole" that doesn't use them. Why not use them if they are standard (other than the fact you should be using them in the first place)?

Anyone else out there feel the same?

Same here... I use them 100% of the time but I feel like I'm the only one around using them - let alone knowing *how* to use them, especially in roundabouts (or rotaries, whatever you call them).

I grew up in Miami. I learned from an early age not to use turn indicators because it gives away your game plan!

I always use indicators. Given that I remember to use them that is. Some times I make a turn and pick up on the fact that there is no "click" noise of the switch thingy going back in place, turning the indicators off. At which point I realise I've forgotten to indicate.

But yeah, other people not indicating can be irritating.

It's against the law and dangerous not to use them here in the UK I believe. However, I find it equally annoying when people forget to turn them off after turning a corner, as you can never be quite sure if they are going to turn or not.

I always use my turn signals, even when changing lanes.

Even stranger, I actually look over my shoulder and check my blind spot before changing lanes. When was the last time you saw anyone do that?

I'm not perfect with my use of signals but I do my best. I'm probably around 95% which has got to be about 99% better than most people here in Atlanta.

Use of turn signals is pretty much automatic for me. Occasionally they will fail to automatically cancel if the roll out from the turn is not sharp enough. As for lane changes, I always make a point while driving to know what is going on behind me as well as ahead.

I noticed the same, it must be totally trendy among many drivers to use them not. I really hate it when people change lanes or when people enter or exit the Autobahn without a turn signal, it can't be that difficult to move your left forefinger for one centimeter up or down when you are on the acceleration lane, on the "Exit in 300 meters" sign, or when you want to change from one driving-lane to another.

Of course I always use my turn signals so that other drivers can see where I want to go, it gives additional safety.

checkmark  And it got me in to an accident a few years ago. I was waiting at a junction to pull out and turn right. There was a car approaching with his indicator on, indicating that he was turning in to the road I was pulling out of. He even slowed down as if doing that. I pulled out, he apparently changed his mind and sped up, and hit me side-on at a no-so-shabby speed.

Yeah. Tricky things those pesky indicators. Well at least for about 80% of all motorists in the Netherlands. And I have to laugh at those idiots who start to indicate once they are half way through the manoeuvre.

Driving techniques and road safety are things that I have very strong views on. I use my indicators at every opportunity.

This is especially true for motorbikes or so-called scooters (you know, the 50cc thingies kids drive). You need to be especially careful because a blinking indicator is probably blinking only because they forgot to turn it off. And there are many accidents happening like that... there's been a lawsuit recently because the scooter driver stated that "the car driver should have though that I might have forgotten to turn the indicator off" (yeah right)

I have found that the more expensive the vehicle, the less likely that a signal/indicator will be used.

The authorities talk about "road rage" but in all honesty, they should really be looking at what causes it. Not signaling really gets my blood boiling.

I have come to the conclusion that in the Toronto area, no-one can judge distance or speed. People just look to their left then switch lanes without considering that although the lane was empty, there was in fact someone screaming down that lane at twice the speed of them and they now have to take evasive action to prevent rear-ending them.

I use directionals in all situations but one: If I am in a lane that must turn right or left, I do not use them. As everyone in that type of lane should be following the signage, there is no need for signalling. Yes, I am a hard-headed SOB.

Interesting observation. And I must say, one that is dead on balls accurate as well. I don't know the true cause of driver's failure to use them. Laziness? Ego? Absentmindedness? But the typical response I get from a driver when I am preparing to cite them for failing to use their indicator is: "Are you sure? I could have sworn I had it on", followed by, "Oh, well I must have forgotten". One woman did surprise me a while back with her candid response of, "I never use those things". Pay at the window, ma'am.

I noticed the same, the bigger the car the less is the turn signal in use.

Perhaps he should just be glad that he's alive. I actually find lorries are also good at doing this, turn their indicators on to enter a motorway, and then just don't turn them off for whatever reason, meaning car drivers are quite understandably reluctant to use the middle lane in case the truck pulls out.

Oh yeah, definitely, and this BS has already caused me more close calls in the past 6 months or so than I would want. Now, I'll admit that I occasionally don't use the indicators myself, but only if I am sure that there are no other vehicles near me. But stuff like when somebody going 100 on the Autobahn decides to switch into the left lane without any signal while someone else is closing on the left lane with 150 or more, that's just retarded. Or those that just feel they need to get out of their parking spot asap and should have priority on the street. There's no swerve training in driver's ed that'll teach you to avoid such non-indicators.

What pisses me off most is when you're on a two lane (per direction) road, behind one car at a busy intersection. The light turns green, and only then does the f*cker furn on their left directional. Now you're stuck behind this guy who's waiting to make his turn, and all the traffic is flowing past you in the other lane so you can't go around him. Had he indicated his turn properly, before he came to the light, you would have been able to come to a stop in the right lane, thereby bypassing him.

This infuriates me. It's so thoughtless and it happens ALL the time.

If the car has an American licence plate, don't expect the operator to use the signals, in fact get away from the vehicle as quick as you can.

Always. The worst, though is people who hold you hostage by not using their signal to let you know they're turning into the place you're turning out of so you don't need to wait for them to pass. What makes someone so dumb and selfish that they feel they have the right to delay someone for no reason whatsoever when not doing so requires so little?  banghead

I signal on most turns and lane changes. Of course, I'm not perfect. And there are times that I knowingly won't use it, along the lines of CastleIsland's comment about turning lanes.

As for checking the blind spot, I do that religiously. I've been saved from changing lanes right into another car, because I couldn't see it in the mirror, but caught it when looking. You learn pretty quickly that if it works, keep doing it.

RE: Rant: Do You Use Your Indicators?

yes, oh yes, i hate people who don't signal.

In this city people stopping at reds then deciding to turn left on green are annoyingly common, you learn to give at least half a car length or go to the right lane and just gun it on green.

Highway isnt quite so bad, maybe because traffic tends to migrate to one lane and stay there unlike much of the rest of the world ive noticed (though we won't get into the middle lane slow pokes...).

The worst though are the old maniacs in their battlecruisers (aka big old Lincoln/Cadillac/etc) that don't signal, that don't get into turn lanes properly (if at all), that brake far too early and that don't check blind spots. I almost got creamed by one of these on Monday coming into the city. And then there are the streetracers, "what signal, whoa thats so not happenin dawg!"

What seriously irks me is the taxi cabs that signal a turn left at an intersection, then without warning go straight when the light changes... I don't know if this is a Tdot thing or what?

I think ill leave it at that.

If the car has an American licence plate, don't expect the operator to use the signals, in fact get away from the vehicle as quick as you can.

Funny, I think that when I see Quebec license plates.... I always wonder how they managed to get their car to Florida, because they sure as hell couldn't have driven it that far....

I always use it for turns. Using it for lane changes only became the law in Florida within the last year, so many people here still haven't caught on to that....

Anybody ever see anyone using the hand signals anymore? Do the one for right turn and most people would think you were flipping them off....
The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.

I use them 100% of the time, because I don't want to be the "a**hole" that doesn't use them.

Hell no. Turn signals are a sign of weakness where I come from.

Turning at intersections I signal out of habit, overall it's safer when other drivers can see exactly where you're going
Roundabouts I signal simply because I can't stand it when people don't signal (Works much better when they do, no signal = stop because they're coming, signal = go because their leaving)
Lane changes I do exactly what I was taught: SMSM. Shoulder, Mirror, Signal, Move.
