Host City Olympics 2016

Tue Mar 13, 2007 5:15 am

The question is: Choose 5 or 6 cities from different continents and countries that in your opinion should be candidate for the 2016 Olympics.

As far as I know now, the US will choose between Chicago and LA.It also seems that Rio is serious in being a candidate.

You don't have to pick these places, but please do give some arguments why your choices should be candidates and which one of the candidates will get the Olympics eventually and for what reason.

I would say:

Chicago (lovely city, one of america's finest cities)
Rio (most logical in South America, IMO)
Moscow (should try it again)
Istanbul (One of the best metropole's to bring cultures together)
Capetown (South Africa could use some positivity)
Hong Kong (maybe not very logical because of Beijing, although one of the great Asian cities)

Richard M. Daley will still be the mayor of Chicago.

Just out of interest has Dubai had/going to have a olympic games? They seem to like everything big, so i'd be surprised if they hadnt bid'd for it.

They could have the summer games a little later or earlier in the year, like they did for the Melbourne '56 games (although that was for different reasons, but still).

I would rather not see the Summer Olympics in the USA for many more years. The infrastructure and security costs, along with the terrible inconvenience to the city where it is held in far negates the long term financial benefits. Most people don't really care about most events, unless a USA athlete is a sure winner or a top contender, and only in certain events.
Unfortuntaly pride issues, the payoffs to politicans (for the Billions in construction of new infrastrucure), the USA Dollars we stupidly allow our commercial networks pay (meaning way too many bad commercials and delayed broadcast of events) all pay for the push for the Olympics at all. Worse is the serious conflicts of political ethics the games have far too often been includng in 1936 with both the winter and Summer in Nazi Germany, the USSR in 1980 and China next year being the worst examples (although the USA has also played the politics card with the Olympics). With those strikes against it, forgetaboutit, unless able to use a city with Olympic class available facilities, perhaps Atlanta being the most ready with the least new infrastrucure needed.

Doha had the Asian Games (second largest games after the Olympics) this year and that went fine. They just play a lot of the games/sports in the early evening. It gets dark there quite early and stays comfortably warm in to the night.

They have not hosted in the past, and the two host cities for 2008 and 2012 have already been awarded. 2016 is the next opportunity.

From an athlete's standpoint, Dubai is the last place I would want to compete. What a beating...

I'd narrow it down to Chicago, Rio, Capetown and Istanbul. LA and Moscow already had Olympic games, and although the US already had a few Olympic games done (I recall Lake Placid and Atlanta), Chicago could be a nice choice. Also, although Rio could be a great choice, I don't know if they might face the sames problems Brazil in general is currently facing with regard to their possible bid for the 2014 World Cup, so there are a few question marks there as well.

Personally, I hope it will be Capetown. Those could be the very first games held in Africa and be historic in a way. Only problem could be that the games would be held in the Southern winter, so perhaps the weather might not cooperate.

LOL, wouldn't put it past them....  Wink

As Oli88 mentions, you can always compete at night and in the evenings to keep temperatures reasonable. But the marathon and triathlon guys in particular must keep their fluids and electrolytes up several days before the event takes place. Trying to keep your pee clear in Dubai is easier said than done.

I think Dubai would be great. Since Olympics have turned into megalomaniac, obscenely commercialized event I can think of no better place for it. If they can have an indoor ski slope  Yeah sure they (those enslaved Indianas, Pakistanis and people Bangladesh to be exact) sure can build an airconditioned indoor marathon track or some other stupidity.

My choice would be Rio or Chicago, then I'd conveniently have the live TV picture in the evenings. Back in 2000, when the games were held in Sydney, I had to stay awake almost every night across three weeks. Not good for school or work.  Sad

More seriously though, I'd like to see Cape Town or Hong Kong hold the event.

My opinions on who should have it are...

North America:
Toronto, Canada (Cultrally diverse city that I think would be great for the games)

South America:
Rio de Jeniero, Brasil (Big city of South America and growing diversity)

Europe:
Lisbon, Portugal (Just because haha)

Asia:
Delhi, India (I dont know if the Monsunal Season is during this time or not?)

Middle East:
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Center point for the Middle East and big on world sports)

Africa:
Capetown, South Africa (Pretty much the San Fran of the United States. Has a lot there)

South Pacific:
Singapore (I do not know if there is enough room there but huge part of the world.

South Africa is hosting the World Cup in 2010, so I doubt they'd get the Olympics for just 6 years later. I'd bank on Istanbul or Chicago.

I'm hoping the USOC at least considers a bid from the San Francisco Bay Area. We went for the 2012 slot, but of course since that was the first selection after 9/11, NYC got a good deal of the sympathy vote. Not that our bid was that great anyway. Opening ceremonies at Stanford Stadium? Come on.

I think San Francisco would have just as much chance as Seattle. Cities like Seattle, San Francisco, and San Diego would do a good job in hosting the Olympics, but I don't think it would ever happen. Land is much too precious in these cities and much to expensive to waste on building an Olympic stadium where it's much too metopolitan and not much spare space. The people of Seattle wouldn't want it anyway. You have to go as far south as Tacoma or as north as Everett to build some of the event sites as too much of Seattle is taken. Portland might be a good place to host the Summer or Winter Games. I could see Miami as a host site for the summer Olympics

Chitown 2016. Boy that'd be interesting. An equestirian facility would be built just a few minutes north of where I grew up. Hard to imagine. And with road construction and congestion as it is now, I'd hate to see what the Olympics would do. Overall though I can see it being a positive.

Rio has been trying since 2004, at least. But they still got a way to go. The whole country in fact.

This year they will host the Pan-American games, so this time they'll have something big to show the IOC. The Pan-Am games are roughly 650% over-budget from what I hear, so who knows, they might not even want the Olympics anymore lol

Would be nice, though.

Odds are on North America, South America, Middle East or Africa. I doubt Asia with Beijin 8 years prior or Europe 4 year prior will get another so soon. I doubt Australia/Oceania will put in a bid.

If Brazil does get the 2014 World Cup, no way Rio will host the Olympics in 2016. They very well could perhaps if the world cup is not organized, however.

Who knows!

I think the choice for World Cup host is next year (there has to be six years time, 2008-2014), so that would be relevant I think.

Violence is a problem and the virtually certain Brazil/Argentina joint WC berth will hurt Rio.

Not until they get rid of their problems with racism.

Excellent choice, with good infrastructure. Would be the dark horse. They have been trying for years.

South Africa is the host of the 2010 World Cup.

Quoting Paneuropean (Thread starter):

HK may well be too compact to host the games in the size they are now and the Beijing connection does hurt.

Dubai is too hot and too compact. A general UAE bid would be better, though if the IOC is serious about being green, this could be a big problem.

You are completely wrong here. The US has been absolutely the best at hosting games from a profitability standpoint and does special event security very well and on the cheap.

hmmmmmm. Our infrastructure has a nasty tendency to jam up. However, with the slew of new projects starting up, then by 2016, hopefully getting around will be easy enough to make a bid successful. Until then, avoid I90/I94 like the plague, and use Metra over the CTA (El trains, the busses will be alright).
