Killer Frogs In San Francisco Golden Gate Park

Tue Mar 13, 2007 2:56 pm

On the news tonight they were talking about some killer frogs in San Fransisco's Golden Gate Park. The frogs are called African Clawed Frogs and were found in the lilly pond there at Golden Gate Park. They (Fox 26 News Fresno) also said that these frogs have eaten everything in the pond! They are thinking that someone took the frogs from a lab and put them into the pond to "save them" from anything that would happen in the lab. The City of San Francisco is trying to figure out a way to get rid of these frogs without having to deal with Animal Rights Activists. They thought of 3 things and number 3 seems to be the way they will go.

1) Put in African alligators that eat these African Clawed Frogs.
- Problem: "We do not want African alligators around in San Francisco if things went bad."

2) Let people come to the pond and take them in as pets.
- Problem: "People might end up putting them in other ponds and make the problem worse!"

3) Drain the pond and sift the mud to get all the frogs to the top and kill them.
- Problem: "Animal Rights Activists will hate this one. Oh well, it will need to be done"

***All the quotes were from a man from San Francisco who is working on the problem and was on Fox 26 News in Fresno, CA.

I live right next to this park. This is the first I've heard of this and I doubt any of the above three quotes have been given any serious thought other than draining the lake.
I can't stand these eco-terrorist that introduce a non-native species to a new habitat.
Find these bastards and throw them in the lake!

I am with you on this one. If the frogs needed to be there they would have been there from the beginning. It is just like people putting their boa constricters in the everglades and are giving a problem to the crocodiles there. (At least was 2 years ago)

Need me to make a quick trip over there to help you out?  Wink

Well it was on the news tonight. It has been going on for a few years I guess but now there are no more fish in this pond. And the quotes are from a guy that was on the news being interviewed.

Drain the pond and exterminate the frogs. If you want to fight for them to live...move to Africa where there are plenty.

QXatFAT:
The guy being interviewed was being sarcastic. He knows darn well that the city isn't going to bring in alligators, nor allow people to come and collect them.
Draining a lake is an extreme measure that has to be taken and many people need to understand why it's being done when they take a jog around the lake.

It's a bigger problem today than it was two years ago.

Kill the frogs. Unless someone wants to put up the cash to fly them back to Africa.

A friend of mine works on the Galapagos Islands. She can tell you stories about species not native to the islands endangering the survival of the local, native flora and fauna!

It's pythons vs. alligators... But you're close... And the pythons are getting worse....

Drain the pond and kill all the damn frogs...

It's a bigger problem here in Florida than some other places because of the climate. Hawaiian snails in South Florida; giant Monitor Lizards in Cape Coral... Plus all sorts of non-native plants that in many ways are worse than the animals....
The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.

Yeah I didnt remember the right animals haha. Oh well I guess. So how is that turning out though? Anything being done to try to weed the pythons out of there?

Yeah not me. Kill them and call it good. It is not like they are indangered or anything like that.

I saw this story on a Bay Area news channel a couple of nights ago. They are eating everything in the pond and turning on each other now.

I didn't hear any solution regarding African alligators  Wink, but someone noted that it would be quite expensive and time consuming to "drain the swamp," as it were.....

They actually interviewed a "African frog expert" from Steinhart Aquarium who brought up a good point....nothing in Golden Gate Park is truly native. It was all sand dunes in a past life! So what would we actually be "saving" here?

John
