Guiness Question

Enjoyed a Guiness withn dinner tonight...in honor of St Patrick's day. Drank it from the bottle .Question: What's the white (I assume) plastic thingee that's still in the bottle?

It's some sort of device to mimick the effect of serving the beer from the tap... IIRC as you tilt the bottle to drink from it, the plastic thing releases gas to give the beer it's famous head...

its the guinness widget.

apparently quite the amount of money was spent on r and d to get the can pour the same as a pour from a tap. when the can is pressurized, it forces some of the black stuff inside, and then when the can is opened, the pressure in the can reaches atmospheric pressure quickly. The beer that was forced into the widget gets forced out through tiny holes and produces many many little bubbles similar to what a tap would do.

it short, it tries to help you pour the perfect pint of the black stuff.

The widget dispenses nitrogen bubbles into the beer. Guinness is carbonated with nitrogen instead of CO2. That's what gives it that velvety body and creamy head.
