Trader Joes,

That is a lovely little store!

In Arizona, I buy from Fry's and Walmart, in that order. I also buy candy from the World Trade Market.

In Montana, it's from Safeway, Harvest Foods, McGowan's, and Walmart.

I can't tell you how friendly the staff is at Trader Joe's. I buy organic and don't mind paying a premium to shop at Trader Joes. I asked when they are building a store in Austin and they said currently, they have no plans to expand in Texas.  Sad

That and the layout and the feel of the store overall. I'll never forget when I first went in one. They really plan those to appeal to your senses...the prices are higher, but as long as you don't buy every item from there you can come out quite good. (Although I have a friend who buys there exclusively almost and I swear he'll run out of money soon...mainly because he treats it like Costco or something.) I don't think that there are any in MT, so we're in the same boat right now. Muh.

Right across the street is a 24 hour King Soopers supermarket (aka King Stupids to some here), so I do most grocery shopping there...

I do most of my shopping at a Wild Oats that is only a few minutes away from my place. Occasionally I'll go to Safeway to find something that Wild Oats doesn't have. I try to eat organic when I am home, since my eating habits suck while I'm on trips.

I would say mostly Bel Air and Albertsons since they closest. Nugget just opened a new store that I will have to check out sometime as I hear great things about them.

Safeway and Trader Joes are around here as well, but their prices tend to keep me away.

Usually Shaw's in West Leb, but have been going to the South Royalton Co-op more frequently, especially since I learned that on a lot of Mondays they have someone come in and cook some damn good Southern Fried Chicken!

I can get almost all of my groceries within walking distance, which I find extremely convenient.

On occasion I go to the city center by bicycle which is much more convenient than doing it by car.

Big shopping centers are unnecessary if you're not constrained by car access...

I buy grocercies in the same store I work. Fruit Fair. Smallest grocery in my city, and been around for 70 years... Best produce in the city  Wink But If we're closed or I need it asap I'll go to the *sigh* Big Y or Stop and Shop... Both dismal stores full of whining unionized clerks in the case of S&S who bitch about every little job they have to do, and god forbid you ask them to double bag... Chains.. pff.
Doors open, right hand side, next stop is Springfield.

In the Northern New Jersey area where I live, A&P, Food Basics (part of A&P, limited items, cheap prices, both part of the German Tegelman group), Stop & Shop (part of the Royal Dutch Ahold group) and Shop-Rite (big in NJ, with stores locally owned by individuals or groups, but the brand and purchase as members from one of the largest co-operative businesses in the USA, Wakefaren food). All have stores within 2 miles from my house. I tend to do most at Shop-Rite as has the best day to day prices, using the other stores when more convenient or have a sale on some product I need.

Personally I hate large shopping centers, a lot of people in the same place going around like crazy for "super discounts" (and low quality stuff) make me feel sick.

For me there is nothing better than a short walk to the nearby bakery for some bread (still warm), butcher for some steaks and grocery for fruits and vegetables. For the rest there is the local supermarket.

for groceries, i go to Super Target, actually.

as strange as it sounds, i live close to the best Super Target i've ever seen in my life. hella great grocery selection, meat department is *WONDERFUL,* the deli section would make a New Yorker proud, and there's produce a Californian would love.

i love it so much, that if i could make love to it, i would.

That can be in outlets of the chains like Migros, Coop, Spar, Aldi, -- but also in small Italian, Turkish, Lebanese, Maghrebin, Indian grocery shops. those small "niche"-traders often have some specials, and there prices are not higher than those of the "discounters".

Here on the east side of Milwaukee I go to the old Jewel over on Humboldt and North. However almost all the Jewels (including mine) in the area were bought out by Pick 'N Save. Troublesome, because it was already the largest chain in the area, and so many of the others are shutting down. Less competition is never a good thing.

To do them justice, I might mention that some Swiss retailer chains like Migros and Coop in recent years have added heaps of Arab, Indian, Latin American products. You for example can buy Harissa everywhere, and Migros even launched Beef Salami, a real treat ! It is imported from Milano where I have seen it almost a decade ago. Spar has a good Cola from Bergamo -- San Carlo Cola which I prefer since Mecca Cola here around has virtually disappeared, not least as those small groceries now have a wide variety of COCA COLA on their shelves. What a coincidence !

Safeway, QFC are the two mainstays. Safeway is a little cheaper but I like the QFC on Capitol Hill better, it's more like a high end Fred Meyer (owned by the same company and actually replaced the Fred Meyer that was up here).
We get most of our meat at Costco, make a trip about every three weeks and freeze a bunch of it.
