With the exception of Nutro, Iams/Eukanuba, and Hill's (maker of Science Diet), most of that food is the "grocery-store" garbage, stuff that my animals will never get.

Wheat Gluten is believed to be the cause...and it is not surprising. Wheat Gluten is what also killed several dogs last year, after eating Greenies, an edible dog treat.

If one company makes all these brands, is their much difference between the "vet reccomended" brands and the "grocery store garbage" ?

Menu Foods announced Saturday it was recalling dog food sold
under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands. The food was
distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico by
major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.
The recall is limited to ''cuts and gravy'' style pet food that
was sold in cans and pouches.
Two other companies _ Nestle Purina PetCare Co. and Hill's Pet
Nutrition Inc. _ also voluntarily recalled some products made by
Menu Foods as a precaution.

The recalled brands are:

Yes, I'll take an example, Nestle Purina Pet Care.

There is the low-priced, low-nutritional value stuff, like Dog-Chow, Meow Mix, etc.

Then there is a step above, like Purina One and Beneful.

Up the line is the Purina Pro-Plan,

And up top is the high-dollar veterinary exclusive stuff (usually only for special diets)

As you notice, there are different "grades" of food. The mid and high grade food is the best for pets, but I emphasize to stay away from the "discount garbage."

I will bet anyone to compare an animal on junk to six months of being on the better stuff. You will notice less stool, a better coat, and overall a healthier animal.

As I like to say, put it in human terms. Do you want to be fed fast food your entire life, or eat a much healthier meal (and subsequently live a better life)...for just a fraction more?
