Snowing Again In The UK

Mon Mar 19, 2007 1:08 am

Well I missed the forecast but it didn't seem that cold when I was out earlier! Now though it's now snowing very heavily here in Birmingham, anyone else getting it too?

We had a flurry about 1.30 which lasted about 5 minutes then stopped. Now it's mixed cloudy and sunny and quite pleasant - if you don't go outside in the biting wind!! Big grin

Nice day in London apart from a snow shower that lasted an astonishing one minute.  Wink
The sun is shining but it's cold, funny seeing as last Monday it was very warm and people were going around in T-shirts and shorts.

Not here, it hailed a lot earlier though. Wink I'm surprised because it still feels so warm - just been outside in my usual shorts and T-shirt attire, and it's not even chilly  Confused

What I was out in was snow, it fell slowly and didn't bounce when it landed. It's been windy all day though!

Well I have a rather ugly pigeon clinging to a branch in my garden as the wind howls around it, other pigeons just fight it an end up going backwards lol.

Dammit, every time I go to Europe or even the north east USA in the winter to experience what a really bad winter is like...the sunshine comes with me. I'm actually jealous I was there in December and January and I just missed all of the storms.

In case you guys think I'm joking, I'm not... I want to experience the absolute worst.

You wont get any bad winter storms in southern England but in Scotland, that's a different story. I heard today that they had average winds of 74mph (but I think that was a mistake by the BBC presenter) and heavy snowfall! Ireland get a lot of storms but not really any snow just very strong winds and heavy rain.

Try going to Svalbard in Spitsbergen. There are direct flights there from Oslo all year around or from Tromso in Norway, and the winter temperature often dips down to 40 below, and that's without the wind chill factored in. Mind you, it's only -11 there at the moment which is very warm!

You got nothing in Poland! That's a shame I was there a few years ago and there was loads of snow. I have never been in Dublin when there has been snow but I know it's rare even though it happening more often in the past few years. In February we got a lot of snow, my school was shut for a day and there were minor delays at LHR.

I was just watching the Everton and Arsenal match and the amount of hailstones that have fallen is unbelievable they are about the size of a 5p coin. I know in America they can get to the size of golf balls but 5p sized ones in England is pretty big.

You need to go to the East Coast of Canada.

Anywho, is this snow hitting London at all? I'd hate for flights to be cancelled for a couple of inches of snow again Big grin

Hail here, with a met office weather warning for 'heavy snow'. The warning also appears to cover the entire UK!

We drove through some pretty heavy snow about midnight yesterday on the M1 between Milton Keynes and Daventry, and lighter snow on the M25 heading out of London last night. When we woke up this morning in Rugby there was snow on the road. It was snowing a few minutes ago in York, but it's not settling.

the cold weather HAS arrived yesterday evening with things right around to start snowing but upto now it is just rainy. The snow-"border" has come down to some 600 meters however, but most population-centres are between 200 meters (BSL) and 600 meters (higher parts of Zurich, and Berne) and so not (yet) affected.

Looks like a cold front is coming from the north atlantic. It's getting pretty cold here in Barcelona as well, some 9C now.

By the way, I just saw this picture on a news website:

It's from Tenerife, Canary Islands. Apparently, snow is normal at the very top of the Teide, but certainly not this low and specially not so late in winter...

I seem to recall we had a large snowfall in the UK last March as well, as we got a decent snowfall in Morecambe for the first time in 10 years or so!

At the end of the day this thread proves how obsessed we Brits are with the weather, it's unhealthy but we're a nation that can't help it, we'll moan about it being too hot or too cold, moan about how the weather changes too much and moan more about how it hasn't been sunny. silly

It's 15C here today, pretty damn cold for the time of year, dropped to about 5 or 6 last night, looks like there's been a lot of snow on the mountains over in Italy. It was really lovely last week, got up to 21 during the day, nice and sunny too. I blame George Bush.
