Louisiana Gov May Not Run For Re-election

Wed Mar 21, 2007 5:27 am

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco has asked for air time at 6:00pm local time this evening. Speculation is that she will announce that she is NOT running for reelection:
http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/wwl032007tpblancore.30745970.html

This would obviously be good news if she makes that official (everybody down here wants her out). However.....and bear with me on this.....it makes my announced candidate's run for the office quite a bit tougher. Here's why:

The ongoing speculation was that the governor's race would come down to Blanco and Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal. Recent polls showed that Jindal would take Blanco to the woodshed every time, which suits me well indeed, considering Jindal has done a superb job as my congressman, moreso since Katrina.

However, it had more recently been speculated that former US Senator John Breaux might make a run for the office. He has not announced either way yet, apparently waiting to see what Blanco did. Breaux was a popular senator here, still has quite a following, and even I had an appreciation for some of the stuff he did while in office, and even more so since he left office.

I'm thinking that perhaps the Democratic establishment/politicans statewide and perhaps in DC, got together with Blanco and advised her that the best thing was for her to get out, and put John Breaux as a candidate who would give the party a better shot at retaining the governor's job.

If the speculation holds true, the governor's race down here is about to become a lot more competitive.

I am not surprised and I don't blame her. I also suspect that she may have been pressured by state and national Demo party leaders to not run again to protect the Democratic party there.
She, along with many other politicians, is part of the why Katrina was the human and property disaster it was in her state. Gov. Blanco, as did her predecessors, did little to make the state better able to sustain, protect and properly evacuate parts of her state that could be subject to serious hurricane damage. She further made serious mistakes as to evacuation (including not having a good state plan). Questions have been raised as to her possible reluctance to let the regular military (not just the National Guard) to help after Katrina hit due to her not wanting to make Bush look like a hero. Add to that the serious problems as to lousy schools and related funding problems, corruption of politicians and high taxes, and she was in her own political storm she wasn't going to survive.

Well Sen. Breaux has sort of launched a website (www.Johnbreaux07.com - it says coming soon and you can register) and its pretty much a cert that hes running. Jindal would have cleaned up Blanco, it appears Breaux was the only credible Dem candidate who could win. Also, if Jindal were to lose it would likely hurt a possible run against Sen. Landrieu who, correct me if im wrong, sucks. Shes not very popular with the Dem base and judging by her approve/dissaprove numbers, doesnt seem to be popular with Louisana residents as a whole, but if Jindal doesnt run she may sneek re-election in 08.

Yeah I heard this. Seems the German Steel Plant that she was pushing hard to get them to open a plant in Louisiana, may now go to Alabama instead. She may already know they are not coming and this has factored into the decision. And no doubt, the Democratic Party would much rather have Breaux running against Jindal than Blanco so she may have been forced out. We'll see what she says in a few minutes.

Although she's prattling on about all the alledged "good" she's done as governor over the past three-odd years, it's official.....she ain't running.

Even though the heavily Democratic areas of New Orleans would no doubt vote for her, the rest of the state (including those of us in Jefferson Parish) would vote in Jindal.....as I mentioned before, a Jindal/Blanco matchup is a Jindal landslide, and the polls bear that out. Were the matchup to be Jindal/ Breaux or Jindal/Melancon, it would be a bit tighter race.

The Dems will have an interesting road ahead to put forth a viable candidate to face Jindal. Breaux will have a fight an upcoming residency battle, he moved to Maryland some time ago and is registered there. Melancon is apparently happy being a Congressman and noted yesterday that he has no designs on the governor's mansion. And for those familiar with other possiblilties, neither Foster Campbell nor Chris John stand a chance.

I'm sure the national Democratic leadership will be studying this race long and hard, and looking to put their stamp on it.....cause the way it looks now, the Dems stand a damn good chance of losing this state's governor's office back to the Republicans.

John Breaux is liked by many in Louisiana and was a very popular senator. A Breaux/Jindal race will be very interesting.

Just a year & a half ago. Not very long ago and it was required so he could have a drivers license in the state he works in. I doubt it would be a big deal to any Louisiana voter but I am sure the Republican spin doctors would love to make an issue out of it.

Then of course there would be only two reasons Breaux would be interested in the job: 1) the national Dems talked him into running or, 2) he's on a power kick. He's making hundreds of thousands of dollars as a lobbyist, while the LA governor's job pays roughly $140,000/year.

Just for you-know-whats and grins, I heard yesterday that the governor of (I believe it was) Utah has the authority to appoint something like 15 or 20 positions. The governor of Louisiana has the authority to appoint something over 2,000. The governor of our beloved state  sarcastic  has a bit more power as compared to other state governor's.....too bad the current one doesn't know how to use it.

He wouldn't be the first candidate asked by a major political party to run for office. It's no big deal.
If he were on a power kick, he would have ran for re-election in 2004. He would have won it easily.

Utah is not a good example to compare your state to.

BTW, The Jazz belongs in New Orleans, not Salt Lake City.  Smile

What are the chances of the Jindal camp and the GOP making the minor residency clause an issue?

Jindal's always been an above-board straight shooter....he'd probably leave it alone. Now the national and state GOP would probably run with it.

Louisiana politics has always been crazy and will continue to be crazy. If the GOP spin doctors want to make an issue out of his Maryland drivers license, they can go right ahead. It will make them look even more petty, lack of ideas and hurt Jindal even more. John Breaux is widely respected in Louisiana across the spectrum and will win easily if he decided to run.

You got me thinking there, Larry.....had to do a little research, the only thing I remembered about that game was that the Jazz won it late. Surfed around and found that the game was on Deember 26, 1978, and the Jazz won 125-123. The Jazz went 26-56 that year, the worst record in the league. The Lakers went 47-35 and got bounced in the Western Conference semis by Seattle.

Btw, two polls I heard this morning, one had Jindal beating Blanco in an election with Jindal at 59%, the other had Jindal beating Breaux with Jindal at 55%. I voted in an informal ABC-26 poll down here yesterday, it had Jindal with something like 70%, and Breaux with perhaps 25%.
