Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:01 am

OK it's time for us to plan our Honeymoon (We have been married since September but haven't really been able to get the 2 weeks we want to travel.

I would prefer to go to Fiji, the wife wants to go to South Africa.

Who has been to either place?? What is their to do in Fiji and what is their to do in Cape Town?

Thanks folks.

When are you wanting to go? Fiji is temperate - you can pretty much guarantee the temperature year round. Cape Town can get quite cool in their winter.

What is you want to do on your honeymoon? Cape Town is beautiful with some scenery that cannot be beat anywhere in the world. Fiji has some amazing scenery too. If you are wanting to spend time exploring go to Cape Town. If you are wanting to spend time exploring (wink wink) go to Fiji.

Cheers!

I think we want to go in January of 2008.

I would prefer the relaxation and "exploring" in Fiji. Are there any places in Cape Town to relax? How are the beaches there. What can be done in Fiji to keep the lady occupied when she gest tired of the beach? How far are the safari areas.

Cape Town, Fiji isn't the most stable nation to take a honeymoon, i was in Cape Town a few months ago...its beautiful, the beaches are especially beautiful around the camps bay area, there is the beautiful V&A waterfront area, the Garden route which is phenomenally beautiful.

There are safari parks in Cape Town region...though they're not as good as those closer to Johannesburg...nevertheless they are worth a visit. Robben Is is a fantastic excursion, Table Mt is not to be missed...I'd choose Cape Town any day over Fiji. It's also a very safe and cheap city for a holiday.

Since I don't know you well enough I cannot make a good recommendation. January is summer and gorgous in Cape Town. The game parks that are nice to venture to are quite a ways east - but there may be some closer that I am not aware of.

Personally - I would suggest Fiji. Cape Town is fantastic but you would be busy exploring the sites and sounds. Fiji is secluded and romantic and beautiful. Go there and forget about the world and things to do. Make it a time for just the 2 of you. Use Fiji as a chance to escape the world and the business of it - treat her to her. She may want to do Africa but tell her you just want to sweep her off her feet, dazzle her on a beautiful beach and treat her to what is natural about her being a woman. That you want to be able to stand at the shores of the ocean and look her in the eyes and tell her that your love is deeper than the ocean and you would go to the ends of the earth for her and that her beauty goes far beyond the palm trees and the white sand and the blue waters. Sweep her off her feet.

Blah, blah, blah...nice words, but newly married at the beach still means one thing and one thing only. You get to rest, a lot, after some required 'exercise'. Did the beach during my honeymoon and it was great. Talking about the room, now... Wink

I've been to Cape Town numerous times and love it. I also just got back from Fiji last week. For a honeymoon, there's really no comparison... Go to Fiji. The Cape Region is a fantastic destination. Cape Town is a great vibrant city, with much to do in relatively small distances. If you go up to the winelands or along the Garden Route it can also be very romantic. But, that said... its a long way to go, and it won't be the "Africa" of animals and game parks. For that, you'll have to go up to the Kruger area (east of Johannesburg).

Fiji on the other hand is the classic honeymoon destination of beautiful beaches, swaying palm trees, and lovely people. Forget what anyone tells you about stable governments or recent coups. Unless you plan to spend your time in Suva, the capital, you won't hear anything about politics whatsoever. Suva has no redeeming tourist value. Spend your time on one of the outer islands. The Fijians are absolutely lovely people. I would go back there in a second. It is also a fantastic dive destination if you're interested in scuba diving. We stayed on Taveuni, which is very remote and picturesque. I wouldn't recommend the place we stayed for honeymooners, since it caters primarily to scuba divers, but there are several beautiful hotels on/near Taveuni that do cater especially for honeymooners.

Please feel free to check out the pictures my partner and I took:

You'd have to. After that stomach churning tirade she'd be running away from you as fast as she could.

Goto Cape Town. You'll probably come accross large groups of rambunctious young Australians and New Zealanders in Fiji. Not to mention the crusted over remains of Jon Stevens career after hosting the hopeless reality TV Show "The Resort".

You're so sweet, I'm getting dental cavities  duck

Jokes besides ... it's a matter of personal preference: I'm one who would be bored to death in Fiji, I need action on a vacation (visiting cities etc), be it a honeymoon or just a regular one. Sitting on a beach relaxing? Forget it  Smile but if this is something you like, probably Fiji will be a better choice.

I would pick Cape Town...

January ? Definitely NOT Fiji then .

firstly , Australians and New Zealanders have their school holidays Dec/Jan so demand is high even though they ought to know better ( see point two )

secondly , during the Southern Summer the Pacific Islands are humid and prone to tropical storms

Not too sure on the weather in Cape Town in January , but it is a stunning city and would be my preferred choice of the two (at pretty much any time of the year )

Go to Cape Town. The weather will be warm and nice in January, besides Fiji will be full of drunk Australians and Kiwis during that time.

I vote for Fiji, it's where my wife and I spent our honeymoon (in August). We took the Blue Lagoon cruise - 6 days / 5 nights cruise up a small chain of islands, stopping at a different one every day. Bored? not a chance.

We loved it so much we went back for our 11th anniversary - and did the cruise again.

The beaches are lovely to look at in Cape Town but the water is frigid at all times of the year, if this makes a difference to either of you.

I read this in the guidebooks. I saw it on message boards. Yet I rationalized it away ("..well the water isn't exactly warm in Southern California either...").

I was hoping beyond hope that somehow those beautiful inviting beaches were swimmable.

Nope. After several seconds in the water (foot only), I realized the only way I would get in was if I had flippers and a LOT more blubber (and this was in mid-January).

Great area to explore though!

Nope - not Hallmark - just someone who is a romantic at heart.

Again - it depends on what your goal is. What is the purpose of your holiday? Think about that then make your decision.

No advice or anything, but from a woman's point of view, this:

 crazy  would only result in:

:D So... don't do that. Please.  Silly

Cape Town...it is an amazing place. I absolutely love it. It really is hard to go wrong almost anywhere along the coast of South Africa...you can also split it up between Cape Town and someplace a little further east and quieter, like Arniston. Never been to Fiji though.

Not so much at the "honeymoon" resorts or the outer islands. Honeymooners tend not to have to worry about school holidays Smile and the outer island can get expensive for families. Avoid the NAN area however.

Quoting Kiwiandrew (Reply 12):

This is true, but you ARE on a tropical island and the cooling sea breeze is never very far away. At that time of year IT WILL RAIN, but rarely all day. My experience is in the outer islands of PapuaNewGuniea, but we basically just ignored the rain on most days, it would stop soon enough and you were warm and probabley in your swimmers anyway so the rain is only a minor nuisance. Some days though you WILL get a real storm, that does tend to keep you indoors, but hey its a honeymoon!

ANothers suggestion of a inter island cruise is a good one!
