Another College Thread

Wed Mar 28, 2007 9:47 am

I'm in my second semester of sophomore year, and my parents already want me to plan college visits. Whatever. Either way, I have a short list that I just looked up and I just want to know the general opinion of the places and aviation programs. Thanks.

Daniel Webster College
Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (AZ)
Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (FL)
FlightSafety Academy
Henderson State University
Kansas State University
Lewis University
Northwestern Michigan College
Quincy University
Rocky Mountain College
Saint Louis University
Southern Illinois University Carbondale
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of North Dakota
Western Michigan University
Westminster College
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Hey, did you see my thread here about UND? Loads of great info:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/1567502/

But don't just get caught up on one place. I'm looking at probably 20 different colleges right now. By the way, I'm the same age/in the same grade as you. Cheers!

You can add Dowling College in NYC and Delaware State University. Both offer aviation programs and DSU is dirt cheap

Well, I'm not gunna lie. I'm going there tomorrow. I'm a junior, and it is pretty much the college I'm going to attend. I've been there many, many times, and the campus is great, and the social life is excellent. Football games are the greatest, IMO. The Student Union there is very cool, and the entire city has everything you need, trust me. I've been there so many times that I know the city better than Albany. If you have any questions, please drop me an email. I'll be going there tomorrow flying on CO, but I can scan some info and send it in to you if you really are interested.

BTW, what got you interested in K-State?

Saint Louis University

SLU has produced at least one world class, well rounded individual: me. That's right, I justify SLU's existence. Damn I rock.

I thoroughly enjoyed SLU. Graduated with a BS in Aeronautics, majored in Aviation Management. Parks is a great college and McDonnell Douglas Hall, where almost all aviation classes were held at least a couple years ago, is still pretty darn shiny and new. I know a couple of flight instructors there still. The business school is also good, and there are some excellent history professors there as well, if you are into history at all.

SLU recently merged pretty much all technological programs into Parks College, so it is now Parks College of Engineering, Aviation, and Technology. The fleet should be renewed in a couple years (supposedly), although some of the Tampicos are currently mothballed in an effort to save on costs. If you are interested specifically in the flight program, the planes are based at CPS and SLU operates a shuttle bus from campus to the airport. If you decide to go to SLU and live on campus, Fusz Hall rocks. I still talk to probably a dozen people who lived on 5 Fusz with me Sophomore year.

Opportunities after school: again varies. I worked in corporate aviation for a couple years trying to work my way up the food chain. The company I was with didn't have much growth opportunity for me, so I'm now in law school. However, while working at that location, close to half a dozen guys I went to school with flew into the facility in planes in varying sizes from 152s to Citation X's. Send me a PM if you have any other questions.

Purdue is a pretty glaring omission, plus it is a fairly respectable school in its own right. I'd also add in SUNY Farmingdale is one that is less well known.

Remember that Flight Safety isn't a university.... just one huge training facility.

I have my opinion on aviation programs, but unless you ask I'll withhold it. Ultimately you'll need to choose a school that best fits you and your budget. No matter how well the program is regarded, no matter how fancy the planes are, if you are miserable where you're at it does you no good.

I can say in my two years in the flight program here I've never had a time where I wished I went somewhere else. The weather is usually pretty good when it comes to getting flight time and I've rarely had a problem with losing my flight block. The equiptment is great with the fleet of Cessna's we have. The airport is class D but does not see too much traffic besides the schools due to MWA being not more then 13mn to the east. If your into doing outdoor stuff there is plenty of that to do in Carbondale and the surrounding areas. We're in the middle of the Shawnee National Forest and are surround by good size lakes and rolling hills and bluffs for outdoor adventures.

I was to go here but opted for SIU instead. The area is the worst IMO where its local attractions are the oil refinery and a strip club down Rt. 53. There really isnt a whole lot to do out here. My best friend goes here and we started our flight with zero hours TT. I'm halfway towards getting my instrument rating, he's still trudging through his private. I know of other people who got their PPL faster then him but the way the weather is up there, and the way he's been treated with constanly getting his CFI switched on him I wouldnt recomend this school.

Plus I got an ex who was a pilot there, definatly was crazy and not in the good way.

Also to note, Piercey, is that if you ever change your mind about being in the aviation field, ERAU is not the place to be. You'll end up having to transfer, and that's not fun to think about.  no

Where to start? It is an amazing school, but its aviation program looked like cr*p compared to UND. I visited it in November and it was something like three planes in a rickety old hangar (but thats my opinion). I personally think that if you were to choose between UND and Purdue it would be a non-issue, Fighting Sioux all the way!
Anyway, I'm basically in the same situation as the thread starter, but a junior and I've already visited a few schools looking at an ATC major (doubling with Av. Management).
Anyway, hope it helps,
