Work For Circuit City?

Thu Mar 29, 2007 12:32 am

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Circuit City Stores Inc. said Wednesday it
plans to cut costs by laying off about 3,400 store workers and
hiring lower-paid employees to replace them, and by trimming about
130 corporate jobs.
Its shares rose 3 percent in morning trading.
Circuit City, the nation's No. 2 consumer electronics retailer
behind Best Buy Co. Inc., the store workers being laid off were
earning ''well above the market-based salary range for their
role.'' They will be replaced with employees who will be paid at
the current market range, the company said in a news release.

All Right! Even poorer and less attentive service now! I cant wait to try to buy something on a first day of their sale only to be told, we're all out, again. I hate circuit city.  sarcastic

In other news, CompUSA just decided to close half their stores because they said they couldn't make a profit even paying only $6.50/hour to their sales staff.

What a f--ked up company. So much for reward for hard work.

I worked at a Circuit City for TWO DAYS!
The shortest job I ever had. This was back in 1996. It only paid $7.50 an hour. The top paid people didn't make that much more.
I quit the job because it sucked. The funny thing is that it took me two weeks to get the job.
Yep two weeks wasted on background checks, drug test and 2nd. & 3rd. interviews.
Screw them!
I wont even buy batteries from them after reading this.

I was in one recently looking for a TV...not a big $$$ one but a 27" CRT as that's my need...with all those TV's there, they only had 3 employees in that area and they were busy...so I had to wait and wait and wait...and finally beg for help...and they basically ignored me...ended up buying set at Sears!

Their service sucks to begin with. It is like they tell their employees to be intentionally rude. I cannot imagine what will happen when they are replaced with even lower paid people. I said I would never shop there again a long time ago. So far I have lived up to that. Now I have all the more reason to keep it up.

Same thing happened with me two months ago.
A friend of mine who doesn't have a car asked me to take him to Circuit City to buy a TV and DVD/VHS player.
There were 4 employees goofing off in the portable electronics department and no one in the TV section. My friend told them that he wanted to buy a TV. All 4 of them just gave him a blank stare.
Then after 30 seconds of just starring at him, they told him that they weren't authorized to sell in that department. We ended up driving to another electronics store but I forgot the name of it already.

Let me reply with a couple things here...because you guys sound like the average idiot consumer who loses their brain when they walk into a retail store.

Having said that I used to work at BestBuy before CircuitCity and let me assure you the conditions at BestBuy are much worse.

Secondly Larry, $7.50 an hour is higher than CompUSA pays, and is the same as BestBuy up north if you dont work on the sales floor. I started at $9.50 at CircuitCity back when I when I just turned 17 (which was higher than I got paid when I quit BestBuy the week before that)

Thirdly, as far as not having products...you can walk into any retail store be it CCity, BBuy or Home Depot and they might not have something. Its out of the company's control if Sony only ships 10 PS3 units or if there are 10 laptops shipped to us during the week from Toshiba.

Let me say that every Electronics store retailer ad comes out on Sunday AFAIK. When people come in 6 days later on a Saturday and are surprised why there are no more of the $5.99 DVDs you really have to wonder how dumb they are. Customers wait until practically the end of the ad to pick up something on the front page then bitch and moan.

Fourthly, as far as rude people go....this is just a draw of straws, people are different and assholes do come along. Certain areas of the country are inhabited by idiots and people without class. Theres no comparison between going into a store in Daytona Beach and in Schaumburg.

If you want to see a place where its impossible to find anyone to help look no further than OfficeMax or OfficeDepot.

That being said, I get paid pretty good and I get monthly bonuses which I cant complain at my age and with school. Not only that but I get to go on leave for 4 months during the summer, and get paid time off whenever I want which includes Christmas/New Years vacation and spring break.

Its terrible that people are losing their jobs but these stores are in a very competitive market and most of the products they sell only generate 2 - 4 points. the only things that really generate a significant profit are items like cables.

Too much market saturation of big box brick and mortar stores attempting to compete with internet based.

Another company that is closing many stores is Tweeter. This may be a marker for a slowing economy, with worse times to come... we shall see.

There is a Best Buy on Camelback here in Phoenix where the manager is a tool.

Seems the labor cost alone is eating away at any possible profit. The manager, above, is really good at standing around and looking very busy talking to associates, who are also so far up his behind they only see the world from a hole this big: O

We have asked him a few times for assistance and he passes the buck to someone else. What kind of manager is that? S***, I am a manager and will always do the work. Every time.

Circuit City, CompUSA, Best Buy...they all need customer service makeovers. As someone in customer service, I hate bad service.

Thankfully there are other places I can spend my hard earned money.

I know where you are coming from. I have worked my fair share of retail, something I will NEVER work again. (not because the customers can be a pain, but because it was awful work.) I love working in the customer service industry. I think everyone deserves to be treated with respect no matter what my pay may be, or how bad my day is going. It gives me no right to treat anyone unfairly. The store you may have worked at was good, but as a company overall, CC sucks.

Maybe if they spent less time playing grab-ass and more time selling they would do better. Not that it matters, the CompUSA sales people went from knowing something to being totally useless in just a few short years. I think its insane the way some retailers blame the front line people for what is a failure in management.

How many of those employees that are let go would turn around and ask for their job back (at the lower salary) if they couldn't find work elsewhere. I've always had good customer service at CC. So much so, I usually tell them to go away. I refuse to shop at Best Buy, as I've had really bad service there.

I like Best Buy because they don't pull that hard-sell, car dealer bullshit on me. I tell them what I need and they direct me to what I'm looking for. They've actually talked me out of getting more expensive things because I didn't need them.

Thats a load of BS. Firstly, no one calls their customer an idiot to their face. There is a difference in being a customer and being an idiot.

Its not the companies responsibility when some yahoo spills coke on his laptop then tries to return it 6 months down the road and bitches and yells at the counter because he cannot read the return policy thats plastered on his receipt.

You really should walk into a Media Markt, Saturn, FNAC or any other electronics retailer in Europe and realize that there is another way to conducting a successful business without kissing every customers ass when they bitch and moan while still making bank. There is a difference in genuineley helping a customer out thru good customer service and between breaking return policies and spending 30 minutes with a customer whos yelling about why you dont have a $5 DVD on a Saturday night.

You know, I go and do small grocery shopping at Publix. Which is a nice, clean store (and a bit expensive). Do you know what ticks me off the most? The fact that 80 year old grandmas are cashiers and grandpa is doing the bagging. I dont give a flying shit if she says hello to me or not or if she knows UPCs by heart, but I do give a shit if she is taking 20 minutes to scan one god damn bottle of Coke I want to buy. Half the time I think I think they will die scanning stuff because they move so damn slow. This neighborhood friendly customer service is nice...if you drive a Grand Marquis and have time to chat around.

Its good to remember that not all customers want holly jolly customer service in the first place, some customers just want to go in and out and know exactly what they want without asking a million questions about a damn boombox. My hypothesis is supported by the fact that Wal-Mart and not BB or CCity is the biggest electronics retailer. Followed by CostCo where you can buy 32 inch LCDs that are out on bulkstacks next to the toaster ovens.

You would be surprised, there are alot of 18 year olds who know a crapload more about electronics that just got hired than 30 year old guys who only work there because they are good salesman. Thats not to say thats the norm but dishing out a bias because someones age is just as stupid as the original statement.

CircuitCity did this in 2003 when the company went from comission to hourly paid...The thing is, some cashiers have been making $18-20 per hour, you cant expect to make a profit as a retailer when your cashier makes $20 an hour in America in the year 2007.

CompUSA was the only brick and mortar electronics retailer that stayed on a spiff/comission system. Look at them now, they just closed HALF their stores.

No. Your statement can be said about BestBuy too, probably even worse there.

I always make suggestion on what a customer really needs. Mate, I have people that get a $500 Amp, and then drop another $500 on 2 Kicker L5 subwoofers and think that a $32 10 gauge power kit is going to suffice because they are too cheap to spend $40 on a 4 gauge kit. Then they come back the next day and their fuse is blown, half the cord caught on fire or they are bitching about getting 25% power.

I had one asshat last week who busted his alternator in his Honda Civic because he bought 2 amps worth $1000 and he didnt get the capacitor I specifically told him to get because he said "I dont need that."

By all means, if you want to connect your Sony XBR2 LCD with your DVD player with RCA cables from Wal-Mart go ahead but dont bitch if the sagging tits on National Geographic Channel arent clear and crisp.

It did seem that they had a lot of extra staff standing around with nothing to do.

Was wondering how long it would take for the lone employee of Circuit Chity to reply.  rotfl

I prefer Best Buy, any day.

Blown Circuit.

"They are many years behind [Best Buy]," says Bill Sims, a senior research analyst with Smith Barney. "I haven't seen a vision, a strategy out of Circuit City yet that would enable them to successfully compete with Best Buy."

Considering that I have worked for both?

And lets consider all things positive for you who work with FedEx, their package/delivery service is a joke compared to UPS.

In all honesty, BestBuy is not CircuitCitys problem...and neither is BestBuys problem CircuitCity. Everyone is chasing Wal-Mart and CostCo these days. Like I said, Walmart sells the most electronics now, and Wal-Mart is the one that bulkstacks LCDs next to Tonka Toys.

13 quarters running we've taken market share from them. We own them on Express service (25%+) and will be equal to ground in 3-4 years. DHL is even taking ms away from UPS.  rotfl

Fortune just rated FedEx 6th on their recent rankings. FX stock is consistently 35-40 points higher than 5X.

I'm failing to see your point.

Back to the thread at hand. I would never shop or work at a Circuit City. I'm not saying I've never had a bad experience with a Best Buy or a Radio Shack either. Didn't Circuit City try to buy a competitor a few years ago?

My point is that customer service in the end has little to do if you make a profit or not in the retail business...In the end its all about price.

This is why Wal-Mart rules, and not for behind is CostCo slowly creeping in most markets.

This is also why CCity, Sears (to a lesser extent) and CompUSA got their asses handed to them in electronics over the last decade.

Lovely. Nice to see that the company cares about their employees

Yeah that has to suck.

In other news, CompUSA just decided to close half their stores because they said they couldn't make a profit even paying only $6.50/hour to their sales staff.

Ouch... and they are a private company to. Guess Slim got tired of losing money.

Having said that I used to work at BestBuy before CircuitCity and let me assure you the conditions at BestBuy are much worse.

Doubtful... You have nothing to base that on as being you are not a current employee.

Quoting LOT767-300ER (Reply 25):
Your statement can be said about BestBuy too, probably even worse there.

Again... Doubtful. Funny how you have to bring in another companies to bash while yours is crapping on you.

Bestbuy is the largest specialty retailer of consumer electronics in the United States and Canada, accounting for 20% of the market.

All Right! Even poorer and less attentive service now! I cant wait to try to buy something on a first day of their sale only to be told, we're all out, again. I hate circuit city

I second that. I hate Circuit City. Such poor service. Best Buy is ten times better.

Quoting AsstChiefMark (Reply 23):
I like Best Buy because they don't pull that hard-sell, car dealer bullshit on me

They specifically advertise in their job openings that they are non-commission.

Another reason for our family to avoid CC. We started when we bought a radio/tape player for my daughter's car...and had it installed elsewhere. It didn't work two months later...CC agreed it was defective and replaced it..but wouldn't install it because we hadn't purchased their lifetime guarantee! So much for customer service...

Perhaps you shouldn't dish out crap you can't take in the first place.

Crap such as?

Are you upset about the fact that they did a random drug test? Or are you pissed off that you applied for a job position that you knew paid little?

I Love It!

LOT767-300ER still proud that he worked at Circuit City and wears it as a badge of honor.
I applied knowing it would be a B/S summer job yet found a better job shortly after I clocked in for the first time.  Smile

LOT767-300ER is reminding me a lot of the father on Married With Children. Big grin

Who cares if LOT is proud that he works at Circuit City? As long as he is happy who gives a crap? I bet he is real disappointed that you don't approve of his current job.  Yeah sure From reading his posts, it appears he has a good gig that gives him (as a college student) all the time off he needs/wants and he appears to be pulling in a good buck. Also, I'm willing to bet he isn't going to college to keep working at Circuit City. On top of all that, he actually appears to know what he is talking about when it comes to this thread. You should find another dead horse to kick, because this one is kicking back and smacking you right in the teeth.

As do about every retail joint in the US. It's getting really pitiful going into any store with a cash register.

Well aware of his current job. No one is knocking that. I know Piotr very well.
This is hardly a boxing match, but if you find it entertaining that's fine. Then again if I lived in Rochester, just about anything distraction would be entertaining.

Is that all you have? Tired Rochester smack? Its obvious you have never been here. Oh, and driving by on I-90 just doesn't count. We've got weed and bitches here just like everything else and thats about all you require to be down with a place.
