Reports: AUS, NZ, SA, ARG Reach Agreement On 3N

Fri Mar 30, 2007 2:39 am

According to wire reports and breaking news by the sports networks in Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have for the first time all agreed to invite Argentina into the Tri-Nations. Furthermore, the UAR (the Argentine rugby body), has made progress to revamp it's own practices and is close to agreements both with the player's union, the IRB, and officials from the 3N to make the necessary changes and improvements to pave the way for a brand new, expanded, Four Nations of the Southern Hemisphere. The only hurdle is SANZAR's television agreement and other rugby leagues within Argentina, those two issue are still to be worked out.

More details to come soon, but needless to say, this might be a historic day not only for Argentine sport, but for the sport of rugby! It would be a huge boost to it's claim as the world's 2nd most important outdoor team sport in the world.

Is this just for the Tri Nations to become the Quad nations, or will the Super 14 comp be expanded as well to include Argentine teams?

Good news. With such regular competition against these nations, it will only be a matter of time before Argentina will reach that extra level where they regularly knock off the top nations.

If they do join, it would be good for Argentine and Southern Hemisphere rugby. It would be nice to see a team or two in the Super 14 from Argentina first, however I know alot of their players are on contract to European clubs

Yes, part of the discussions included a ne roster in the Super-14. That's where the hard part of negotiations with the several provincial rugby leagues in Argentina comes in, since they still act rather independently, that is a problem in creating a trully competitive team for that tournament (not that Tucuman Province can't field a good team, mind you). But such things must be hammered out before this whole thing can proceed.

The 3 nations itself would be expanded, to either four of course, or as many are suggesting 5 to include a 'Pacific Island' Oceania team.
