Tuskegee Airman Get Their Due.

Fri Mar 30, 2007 12:37 pm

A story in American History, that inspired a favourite movie of mine, the Tuskegee Airman are getting finally getting the official respect they so long deserved. They were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal on Thursday. If this was posted elsewhere, my apologies.
Tuskegee Airmen receive congressional honors
First all-black aviation unit in WWII awarded Congressional Gold Medal

WASHINGTON - President Bush saluted the Tuskegee Airmen on Thursday, six decades after they completed their World War II mission and returned home to a country that discriminated against them because they were black.

“Even the Nazis asked why African American men would fight for a country that treated them so unfairly,” President Bush told the group of legendary black aviators, who received a Congressional Gold Medal — the most prestigious Congress has to offer.

It is about time that these men receive their long overdue respect and admiration for what they did for our country.

While I have immense respect for them and all that. I'm pretty sure they've been getting the respect they deserve for many many years now. Don't take that as me saying they don't deserve anymore, just that it's not like they have been getting NOTHING for many years already. Hopefully that all makes sense.

It is about f#cking time. The same should be done to the blokes of the Red Ball Express. A few months ago I watched a programme on ARTE TV (a German/French cultural channel) about black US soldiers being based in Australia during WW2. The treatment was so bad that actually the diggers were jumping in to support the black soldiers against their white comrades. Lynching justice was not unknown.

I used to spend most of my weekends at Moton Field back in the late 80s and one of the greatest treats was the chance to occasionally meet some of these men, particularly when they would have their reunions.

In any case, great news and congratulations to the few who are left to enjoy the honor and to the families of all.

Respect they have been getting for the last 20-30 years, maybe longer. You can't swing a dead cat at any WWII or USAF memorial/ROTC and not hit either a statue, wall plaque, something to do with the Tuskegee Airmen. True respect would be to stop throwing awards at them and treat them like every other fighter squadron.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

Every other fighter squadron? The Tuskegee guys never lost a bomber they escorted. Forget the fact they happened to be black and they STILL deserve the recognition. I'm just disappointed that this didn't happen under the Clinton Administration. Talk about a squandered opportunity.

Very well said ted. Just to add. It doesnt matter that there are plaques and monuments to their names. Its the fact that years after the war when white soldiers got their MoH the Tuskegee Airman finally get theirs.

They did NOT get a Medal Of Honor. They got a congressional gold medal which is not a military decoration. CaptOveur hit the nail right on the head. You guys are acting like they have been shunned, disrespected, forgot about, etc... every day since the war up until receiving this "medal". That is nowhere near true. They have received immense honors and the respect they deserve as well as being very well decorated during the war (maybe not as much as they should but decorated none the less). We are not saying they should not be receiving any of this, just that it's nothing new.

You're right Ted, you weren't saying it like I implied. But for the 3 guys I quoted, you're clearly not staying even remotely current with these airmen if you think they're "finally" getting their respect.

Once again your right and I don't dispute that at all. However, it can also be walking a fine line. You go over the top to honor someone all the time while forgetting there were others doing the exact same thing. Fighting, dying, etc...

I believe that this was disproved last year. However, it's still certainly true that their record was damn near perfect.

Not exactly, but some things aren't at all up to snuff at this point. For example, the NPS "facility" honoring them in Tuskegee is literally a double wide trailer. I do think that we can do better there.
