1st Place NJ Devils Fire Coach With A Week To Go

Tue Apr 03, 2007 6:03 am

I don't live on the east coast, but whats up here. Claude Julien has coached the New Jersey Devils to first place in their division with a week to go in the season despite injury and salary cap problems, and he gets fired just prior to the start of the playoffs. So much for the theory that if you are successful you will be rewarded. Perhaps the GM Lamoriello wants all the glory should the Devils do well in the playoffs.

You do realize this is April the 2nd not the 1st? If this is for real, this is definately a dumb move, perhaps a conflict existed between Julien and Lamoriello, who knows but if this is true, its definately not a smart move, whos replacing Julien.
Keep the shinny side up!

This marks the second time Lucky Lou has fired the coach just prior to the playoffs. Did it back in 2000 when he fired Robbie Ftorek with 8 games left and replaced him with Larry Robinson. That team ended up winning the Stanley Cup that year. Whether lightning can strike twice......

With the Pens and Devils locked in a tight race for the Atlantic Division, Lou probably did this to light a fire under the collective asses of the team (even though they've been playing well as of late). At one point, NJ was 10 points ahead of the Pens in the standings and looked to have the division sown up and looked to be giving Buffalo a run for the Eastern Conference lead as well. With the deals the Pens did at the deadline (something NJ couldn't do because they are hugging the salary cap) that set them in motion to either take the division or do some damage in the first round.

I live 3 miles west of the Meadowlands where the Devils play. The GM at the Devils has done this before and you know, it worked the Devils to get to and win the Stanley Cup. Lamoriello is one of the most respected GM's in the NHL and does a good job as the Devils GM. I don't like the issue of the lack of loyality to coaches, but one has to assume that he had his reasons.

Lou is the best GM in the NHL, I'm sure that if he made this call he's doing it for the right reasons.
It may be too early to drink scotch... But it is NEVER too early to think about it...
