Have fun and bring binoculars.

Its the only place I have been where you can see topless women that SHOULD be topless.

Love the place.

It's Miami west. Try to get out to Tulum or some of the other Mayan ruins..breathtaking. Drink lots of bottled water, and use some effective sunscreen  Cool

I went there in 2001 and loved it, would go back tomorrow if I could. Check out the Mayan pyramid at Chichen Itza if you can drag yourseld off the beach, it's amazing.

There's some great bars in Cancun, I seem to remember some great drunk nights in a club called La Boom which had an old London bus outside.

We went to Cancun a couple of years ago for my brother's wedding; it was at this resort called Bahia Principe and it was gorgeous. We went quad biking, looked at caves, went to a nature reserve, etc. Cancun and the surrounding areas are GREAT, you'll have a blast.

Any shopping in Cancun?

I may need a pair of shorts there because I have not got them yet!

I was in Cancun in 2001. My experience wasn't good as the others above. Perhaps you'll have a good time. I was only in Cancun because it was the cheapest way in to Cuba.
Be sure to get a photo of the Cubana IL-62 that services CUN.

Try to get out to the Mayan ruins if you can. Cancun is just another US resort. I didn't feel like I was in Mexico.

IMO, Cancun sucks. I visited in 1998 and I thought it was awful. Sure it has nice hotels and topless women but like Superfly said, It doesent feel like Mexico. Its a cheap rip off of Miami. I was their in August and the humidity was AWFUL! I will never go back.

I was trying to be restrain myself on bashing Cancun but yes, the place SUCKS!
If I want to go to a beach resort with obnoxious screaming frat boys and sorority girls, I'll just go to Miami, Daytona or one of those other Florida MTV destinations. I'd save a few hundred dollars and not deal with US and Mexico Customs.

The only Mexican people I saw were working in the restaurants and hotel staff. It was like any other exclusive resort in Palm Strings, CA or Scottsdale, AZ. Hell, even Orange County, California has more Mexican culture than Cancun. I didn't see any cross-cultural pollination.

I never forget looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant. We couldn't find one! Yet we passed up 3 different Taco Bells, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chickens, Starbucks, Pizza Huts. We ended up settling for a Chevy's-like restaurant.
I shouldn't have any trouble finding a Mexican restaurant when I am in Mexico.

The hotel I stayed at was right next to the MTV Spring Break headquaters. There was huge speaker right next to our balcony and just below was the dance floor with all the obnoxious frat boys and sorority girls screaming and dancing to the sounds of Destiny's Child and Nstink.  mad
The hotel charged me over $150.00 for a telephone call I never made. They wouldn't let us leave unless we paid for it at check out. The hotel I cancelled reservations at charged me $350 even though I cancelled well in advance.
It all ended up being settled a month later but that was money I could have used on the rest of my vacation.

Taco Bell in Mexico. Now that is funny. i didn't know there were Taco Bells here, as Mexican tacos are nothing like what they sell at Taco Bell.

Have anyone been to other Mexican Resorts? Cabo, Vallarta, Mazatlan etc?

Md90fan I am sure you will have fun. What some of the guys didn't like about CUN, is what you like. I know you. LOL

The frat boys and sorority girls are a pain in the ass. They act very immature and immoral. The Mexican people I saw were also hotel employees or road crew employees. I agree that Southern California (and other parts of the southwest) have more Mexican culture than Cancun.

Did you stay in the Oasis Hotel? I know numerous high school seniors stay there and I have always heard bad reviews. I stayed at the Marriott Casa Magne Hotel and it was very nice but Cancun just plain out sucks.

I missed seeing any IL-62s but that would be a Hell of a site.

Yeah I have been a to a few cities in Mexico all rather interesting some colonial with alot of history, others more modern. But I am yet to visit the popular beach destinations. I have been to Acapulco but it is dying though partying there can be fun. I mean what do you we really need to party other than music and alcohol.

'Hotwaters' is a nice, pretty, clean city, but it is a typical modern Mexican city. Doesn't have the old colonial charm as some others may have.

I stay at Isla Mujeres, a small, quiet island off the cost of Cancun. This way I can enjoy the same beach environment without all the crazies. It is close enough to take a short ferry ride downtown if you want to party and check out that scenery...

Xcaret is a cool water theme park / show near Cancun but plan for a full day considering the bus to and from. Also in Cancun there is great snorkeling and some dolphin shows to check out.

I am going again in May and plan to check out the ruins this time.

Isla is very nice, quaint, easy to get around (on foot), and most of all... quiet. Is YaYa's still there? I had an awesome pizza at Rolandi's. It was a great day trip from Cancun.

OK, the area called 'Cancun' is also known as the 'Riviera Maya'. Cancun is but a part of this area. Where we went last year was Playa del Carmen, almost 45 minutes away. There are plenty of different types of hotels/resorts for about 100 miles. It is good to do the research, because the selection is enormous.

So, no, I would NOT visit Cancun again, but there are plenty of gems going South, and we would go back in a heartbeat. One thing to understand, there is so much international tourism, that most residents know English well and are well accustomed to international tastes.

Thank You for the info. I will have to check into that. I didnt realize their were gems south of Cancun. I dont speak a lick of Spanish but never had a problem in Cancun. Everyone I encountered spoke English. I had some great conversations with some of the Mexican people practicing Spanish and helping them with their English.

Recalling the way Cancun, Quintana Roo state and the Yucatan in general were well into the 80s, it is sort of difficult to stomach Cancun now.

If you wish to experience Mexico, Cancun is not the way to do it.

Devan,

Have you gone yet?

I forgot to mention you must try the Rocket at Aquaworld. It's situated in the Cancun Hotel Zone in front of Melia Cancun. Try it in the evening after a beer or two.  Wink

The people of that area take pride of what they have. When we went the forests were burning, as a result of the 2005 hurricane. It was amazing to see the denuded vegetation where the hurricane had hit, but the resident population had quickly rebuilt and the airport seemed busier than the first time we went in 2001. And the evidence of damage was almost invisible.

To repeat (wife is from Mexico): Cancun is NOT my favorite place and I would not recommend it. The gems are located south of Cancun. We would go back to the same place again in a heartbeat.

Have you guys realized that Devan is a teenager? Cancun is precisely what he is looking for. I am almost certain is not looking to experience true Mexican culture. It is Spring Break.
