Yet we passed up 3 different Taco Bells
I was trying to be restrain myself on bashing Cancun but yes, the place SUCKS!
If I want to go to a beach resort with obnoxious screaming frat boys and sorority girls, I'll just go to Miami, Daytona or one of those other Florida MTV destinations. I'd save a few hundred dollars and not deal with US and Mexico Customs.
The only Mexican people I saw were working in the restaurants and hotel staff. It was like any other exclusive resort in Palm Strings, CA or Scottsdale, AZ. Hell, even Orange County, California has more Mexican culture than Cancun. I didn't see any cross-cultural pollination.
I never forget looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant. We couldn't find one! Yet we passed up 3 different Taco Bells, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chickens, Starbucks, Pizza Huts. We ended up settling for a Chevy's-like restaurant.
I shouldn't have any trouble finding a Mexican restaurant when I am in Mexico.
The hotel I stayed at was right next to the MTV Spring Break headquaters. There was huge speaker right next to our balcony and just below was the dance floor with all the obnoxious frat boys and sorority girls screaming and dancing to the sounds of Destiny's Child and Nstink.
The hotel charged me over $150.00 for a telephone call I never made. They wouldn't let us leave unless we paid for it at check out. The hotel I cancelled reservations at charged me $350 even though I cancelled well in advance.
It all ended up being settled a month later but that was money I could have used on the rest of my vacation.

Its a cheap rip off of Miami. I was their in August and the humidity was AWFUL! I will never go back.
OK, the area called 'Cancun' is also known as the 'Riviera Maya'. Cancun is but a part of this area. Where we went last year was Playa del Carmen, almost 45 minutes away. There are plenty of different types of hotels/resorts for about 100 miles. It is good to do the research, because the selection is enormous.
So, no, I would NOT visit Cancun again, but there are plenty of gems going South, and we would go back in a heartbeat. One thing to understand, there is so much international tourism, that most residents know English well and are well accustomed to international tastes.
