I Just Got Conscripted

Thu Apr 05, 2007 1:37 am

So here I am, living happily ever after in the US...then my mom calls me. "You have a letter from the military".

Appears I am supposed to go join the Norwegian army in August.

Looks like I'll have to make some phonecalls...

They want me to do this:

But I wanna do this:

Aren't you an American Citizen or Permenant Legal Resident? Did you ever have to fill out the card for Draft registraion in the USA?
You could look at the bright side, you might have a good time, you get paid, food and a free home for a while.

NOT a stupid question, but a highly justified one, as that is so in case of Swiss citizens with permanent residence abroad. I know somebody who emigrated to Melbourne at age 20, and never returned until age 28, and has been living in Australia ever since, whenever being on visit to Switzerland 1 to 3 times per year.

Well, I've done a few training exercises with our military out in the field (as an infantryman and radioman too), and the army isn't too bad, as long as you just do as you're told hehe, then life gets hard.
The radioman job can be quite fun, but it's kinda annoying at the same time, lugging around extra weight, however, it means you're mostly with the officers and that can be a safer place to be than standard infantryman, and since I've done both roles, I've concluded that in general, radioman is better. When calling in medivacs, helicopters armoured support etc, it really is quite cool, knowing help is on its way before your fellow squaddies. It helps build your confidence, and as long as you stick with a 'can do' attitude, time will go by well, always remember, no matter how rubbish things get, you'll be back at base before you know it. Who knows, if you show potential, there's nothing stopping you climbing the ranks if you stay long enough.

You'll do things that you will like, love and hate. Knee deep in mud and soaked through, but it's worth it for the good times.
I remember, I had to lay absolutely still in full battle gear with camo-cream on for hours while we were being hunted down at the crack of dawn, after having been woken up, done the full morning procedure and done boring 'poncho set up' which wasn't great, but next thing we did was patrolling, which was quite cool. The morning procedure out 'in the field' can be frustrating, but it's all about how your attitude is ! Once you've done training, you can be out in the field with a gun running round calling in helicopters, tanks, everything......and trust me...that's the bees knees.

I myself actually was looking at being a Military Policeman with our army, but I'm looking at the Air force now.

How old was he when he moved back? In Switzerland there's a maximum age for conscription (I don't remember it, was it 26?), maybe Norway has something similar...

Of course it would... well, it depends on the country  Smile

My assumption was also based on the fact that many people in Switzerland would like to find a way to avoid conscription. It's mandatory after all... and it doesn't really make a difference on a CV in this country.

Of course, the US is completely different, the Army also has a different purpose in your country, and I'm convinced that your Army helps keeping the world safe from some of the "bad guys" - Europe should be thankful. Definitely a different image.

Anyway, I don't know enough about Norway to know how it is up there...

Been there, done that...

Actually, I have only good memories from the 15 months I spent as an Air Force MP in Norway.
( but that was 35 years ago -time flies )

After totally 6 months of training I got posted to Gardermoen AB, -a sleepy airport that now has become OSL-

The food was great, the pay was lousy, but I learned to deal responsibly with situations that developed and that has also helped me later in life.

I think you should go for it, for your own benefit.

Police officers with a military background have one-up on those without. It wouldn't really matter in which western NATO country it was served.

You're right if we're talking about MP. But I sort of understood that KaiGywer might have to do his plain-vanilla mandatory military service (not in MP) - which might not be as useful on a CV, depending on the country.

Dude, you wanna be a redcap? Major kudos to you sir. My dad was a redcap.

Redcap to a Brit is the Paras. That picture seems to show a couple wet behind the ears MPs.

KaiGwyer, I have on more than one occasion read posts of yours telling other A.netters that they weren't really Norwegian. So if you find a way to get out of this service (it's not hard to do, I know 3 guys who have) can we expect an end to these types of comments? Just curious...

Nope, the British Royal Military Police wear red berets respectively the old Service Dress cap (left over from the WW1 uniform) with a red cover over the top with the dress uniform.
See http://www.army.mod.uk/rmp/

Hence the name "Red Caps".
The Paras wear maroon berets, a more purplish shade of red.

Would joining a US Military branch exempt you from service to the Norwegian Armed Services?

Just living abroad might be enough...as long as they KNOW I live abroad  Wink

Quoting FlyDeltaJets87 (Reply 30):
If so, you should join the US Air Force.

With a picture from the UK?  Wink

Hehe, I've seen that before. Definately funny Big grin

Everyone who gets deployed turns into a combat role.

Norwegian military? Deployed? Big grin In Norway you have to volunteer to be sent abroad, otherwise you are homeland defense  Smile

Maybe he wants to go. It would look good on a CV.

Not so much on a CV over there because it is mandatory, but some places have "fulfilled military duty" as a requirement for job, school, etc.

Quoting ManuCH (Reply 37):
Could be ... probably I wrongly assumed that he didn't want to go because of what he said in his original post ("They want me to do this" vs "But I wanna do this").

Nah, I just wanna do something more worthwhile  Smile I believe I put down radio when I went for my physical back in 1999 or 2000, but my interests have changed since then.
