Taking My Cell Phone Apart (pics)

Sat Apr 07, 2007 1:39 am

ok, so, my cell phone died a week ago or so. I got the great idea of taking it apart...

Its a old nokia phone.

Anyways, I got everything ready to go, but found I didn't have the correct screw driver (some funky star shape). Ah well, get out the drill, and I drilled out the screws. Ok, only one. I severely messed up the drill bit in the process, and probably inhaled some metal fragments. Heres a picture of the drill bit (note the band of... something... that got added to the bit during the process):

About midway through the drilling-out-the-screw process, I realized I hadn't taken out the battery. I realized when I started smelling some foul smell... took the battery out (only slightly damaged from drill, just surfacy damage), and all was well.

Ok, so, no way to get the other screws out. Hmm. Maybe I'll just pry the whole thing open, or borrow my sister's soldering gun. Prying it open worked somewhat.

Next, I wiggled the screw driver around to get the LCD screen out, which was my main goal. Cracked in the process, but:

Some rather interesting backing to the LCD screen... translucent, but very bright white, and holographic. Interesting.

So, now my fingers smell like a photography shop, and I realized the LCD screen is leaking some junk. I washed my hands, but... eesh. I'm hoping it was just some gummy glue that got on my hands. Any idea is LCD fluid is bad on your skin??

Kai, you should setup some 800 number, and you could be the answer-any-question person. And charge like 2.50 a phone call. Then you could browse A.net all day, too!

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say "answer-any-question". His knowledge is mostly trivial. With some tidbits of it actually being useful  duck

Were you taking your cell phone apart just for kicks or was there a reason? I guess I wouldn't think that you'd be in a lot of trouble with the LCD junk. But then again, I work at a printing press place and don't use gloves when handling all of our chemicals... lol.
