Apple Delays Leopard To Bring Out IPhone

Fri Apr 13, 2007 5:48 pm

If you were waiting to buy a Mac until Leopard came out, you'll now have to wait until October. Resources have been diverted to bring out the iPhone ontime in June, at the expense of Leopard.

Quoting http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/04/12/apple_delays_leopard_release_until_october.html:

In a statement released after the close of the stock market, Apple said its highly anticipated iPhone handset has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned.

"We can't wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is," Apple said. "However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price -- we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned."

While Leopard's features will be complete by June, the Cupertino-based company said it cannot deliver the quality release expected by its customers within that time. Apple now plans to show its developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship the software in October.

I was surprised to see this news because Apple doesn't usually miss deliveries at least not in recent history. But I believe the iPhone is going to be an important product and with their public display it is only time until phones start to show up with similar features sets and look and feel. I've read that the interest list at cingular approaches 1 million units so there is a lot of money on the table.

Luckily the current release of OSX is so nice -- Leopard is mostly all frosting, at least for me.

On the other hand, I had to help our corporate IT boot a 14? year old Mac II to scrub the hard drive before it went to recycling. Amazing how nice and fast 7.5.3 booted and loaded. The look and feel was very clumsy compared to OSX but what the hay, its compettion would have been Windows 3.1?

Another possibility could be that their contracts with Cingular simply make it not an option to miss the deadline for the iPhone, on top of the introduction of an entire new product category being more critical than an upgrade to an existing line.

Maybe... maybe not. It is quite possible that the official and feature-complete presentation will reveal some major new features we hadn't seen thus far... (Not that the already presented ones were anything to sneeze at!)

You guys do know they had to recall all the IPhones because their engineers forgot to actually put the phone part in it.

That is something I would expect out of Microsoft. Kind of like the way SP6 for NT Server 4 broke Lotus Notes from working....hmmm.....who would've thunk it?

Some say it is a rumor because they have not yet shipped, but the story I got was that they shipped to warehouses for the initial realeas without the phone chip. Apple may have been the ones to start the it was a hoax thing IMO. Who knows?

Aren't you running the developer's download? A couple of friends have been running it for a few months now. It's extremely nice from what I hear, even at this stage.

MacOS X is MacOS 10 (and is supposed to be pronounced as such); Since it simultaneously fits the uniX association it's too delicious to waste on upgrades which don't make actual fundamental changes in the architecture... We'll probably see a MacOS 11 some day, but that day is probably still a long way off, so at the very least up to 10.9 I would not expect any changes there.

As a consolation gift, can we at least have the new iChat early? Even my mom wants Leopard; she keeps asking me when I'll be able to connect to her computer and help her whenever she's having trouble with something. I may have to look at trying to set up VNC or something next time I'm there (whenever that is), but iChat Screen Sharing sounds like it would be a lot easier.

I'll even promise to still buy Leopard when it comes out, but iChat is what I'm most excited about.

This is a pretty big blast, considering that they made a lot of fuss about the Vista delay, and that OSX was always on time. Anyway, this is pretty bad when you are the manufacturer of both software and hardware. I would expect Apple to come out with free Leopard upgrades for all macs bought until Leopard releases very soon.

I don't really think that the delay is caused by the iPhone. If so, it would have been known for a long time, and they wouldn't have come up with all the Vista bashing statements. They are probably having some problems with their "top-secret" features, that has not even been released to private betas yet, hence making a june release completely unrealistic.

I'm pretty annoyed about this, as I was also pretty excited. Looking forward to june when they unveil those top-secret features  Smile

Until then, I'll just stick with my Tiger, fully assured that this is still the best OS currently out there Big grin

Hey all,

it was a sad day when they released this information. I wanted to buy Leopard in summer, so I could start using it when I move to my grad school. It was real disappointment, but than again I talked to couple of people. Apple is not a huge company and maybe they need to put more attention to iPhone to meet certain deadlines, as mentioned above.

I think that iPhone will give Apple better margins than 10.5. If you look at it, the iPhone will cost in $500 and up range, similar to some RIMs products. RIM's net income margins are not bad and I think that Apple is going to get more from iPhone than from 10.5. However I also believe that Apple can not "forget" about its PC costumers. It also shows that Apple is diversifying itself into "technology company" rather than "computer company". Some of us already saw this move with iTunes and iPod.

Anyways again I am sad about the delay, but I will get my MacBook once the 10.5 is out. I guess that only good thing from this is that Apple's stock were lower, a good time to buy it. Long-term, Apple will be higher than it is now.

Cheers,
Andrej

Here's another article I found, puts a different spin on the Leopard delay...

Quote:
Apple Inc. has placed the blame for missing its self-imposed Leopard release date on its itty-bitty iPhone device, but analysts on Wall Street suspect other culprits -- such as a widely touted but so far elusive set of "top secret" features destined for the next-generation Mac OS.

I'm rather certain it's not a simple money issue. So far Jobs has always been a strategic thinker, and delays of the iPhone would have a much larger strategic impact than a delay of MacOS X 10.5.

It is apparent to me that Apple is doing quite well with Ipods, this in addition to all the accessories that can be bought at Target, Walmart, etc. So I conclude they appear to be having a monolopy like Microsft has Windows.

Granted virus/bugs in an Ipod are, arguably, non-existant. But people go after them as if all others are not worth the incompatibilities. So again I conclude they have a monolopy like Microsft has Windows.

Granted this is a different field than an OS, but still, I would think with the complaining some make about Microsoft that Apple wouldn't be doomed to repeat what Microsoft has done, even though they like the profits. So I conclude Apple is not taking the higher road by pulling back production to not come off as monoloplistic as Microsoft.

Hey Klaus,

I agree with you that it is not all money issue, but I still think that they will have better margins from iPhone than from OS10.5. However I believe since they have contract with AT&T/ Cingular Wireless to be their provider, I think that they make sure that they will deliver iPhone upon the agreed date. And since they are not a huge company they need to pool engineers from "other assignments."

Either way, I am waiting till 10.5 comes out and than I will get me a MacBook! Big grin

The problem with Microsoft is not the extent of their market share, it's what they do with it!

Microsoft has never competed on the actual product quality. Apple has.

Microsoft has simply been instated into their monopoly power by a clueless but then still dominant IBM and have managed to hold on to that position while churning out products of - well, let's be friendly - questionable quality.

iPods are simply preferred by a large majority of people.

Hey Klaus,

I know that I could wait, but 10.5 is really close and currently I do not need new computer until the fall 07. I was hoping that they would release 10.5 by than, but obviously I was wrong. Otherwise I could wait for OS XI 11.1 that would be even better....maybe it will do all the work.  Smile
