Mayor Daley has done it again! Now the real politicking begins  Wink

Chicago is U.S. candidate for '16 Olympics,

WASHINGTON -- An effort that came as something of a surprise when it was initiated a year ago produced another surprise Saturday, when Olympic ingénue Chicago beat Games veteran Los Angeles to become the U.S. bid city for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Chicago now moves into the international phase of the competition, which begins officially Sept. 15, when candidates must submit their bids to the International Olympic Committee. The IOC will select the 2016 host in October 2009.

Yes, London has the 2012 Olympics. The location for 2014 Winter Games is still in the bidding process. Keeping with the past annoucements have been made about 7 years in advance, we should know at some point this year where the 2014 Winter Games will be held.

So will London have Farnborough 2012 and the Olympics happening concurrently? Probably not, but an interesting thought.

Of course with Chicago 'winning' to be the USA candidate city for the 2016 Summer Olympics, they are getting a candidate that is probably one of the most politically corrupt cities in the USA to bid. I bet the Dailey political machine is already dreaming of their share of the take with all of the BILLIONS of contracts for all the new facilities they will have to build for the Games. Of course, all that money will have to come from the taxpayers, and probably mean the destruction of areas in the city with low income housing. Then you have the corruption, despite newer rules, of wooing the people on the Olympic committee on choosing Chicago. You also have potential competition from South Africa and Brazil, 2 continents where the Olympics have never been held. But the real money is from holding them in American, perhaps the greatest source of income for the IOC due to the TV rights payments.

Sorry. Your pants are like Disney World. Too many tourists in town for the week and WAY too many kids  Wink

Judging by some of those renderings, I can see why Daley wanted Meigs closed so badly.

As posted above, we will find out this July, with either Sochi (Russia), Salzburg (Austria), or PyeongChang (Korea) getting the bid.

As for 2016, Chicago will be going up against, Tokyo, Prague, and Rio de Janeiro (yes, again).

All bids need to be declared by September 15th, so we will see a few more.
Well I believe it all is coming to an end. Oh well, I guess we are gonna pretend.

Curious... has MFW ever held the national nomination? What about a Texas city?

Chicago got a much chance of winning the bid, as I have winning a $300million powerball. Basically no chance will the international Olympic committee will look favorably on any bid by the United States at this point in time. Besides the low standing the US has right now in the international community, the US has hosted four games since 1980.

You might want to go out and buy a powerball ticket. Chicago has a very good chance at winning the bid for 2016. Remember that many of the largest Olympic sponsors (including NBC, which hates not having the Olympics in North America because of the time differences) and those sponsors want to have the Olympics in the USA and 18 years since the last US hosted summer Olympics means it might be time for it to happen again.
