Getting Your Hair Cut...

Mon Apr 16, 2007 4:15 am

Something I've always hated my entire life. Making an appointment, keeping the appointment, waiting for the stylist, never getting it cut just the way I envisioned. I go back in forth from getting the $13 special at the local TGIF hair-cutters, or going downtown and paying $35 for a stylist to work the magic.

How often do you get a trim/cut? My work dictates keeping a rather conservative appearance, but I'd go back to the college years of looking like a hippy if I could.

How do you get your hair cut/styled?

Approx every ten days at any time of the day or night when I can be bothered to do it.

I use my clippers and shave my entire head with no guard or, on occasions, I use a razor and shave my head bald in the shower. As my hair disappeared from the front years ago, I decided to concede to recede! (and it's cheap too!)

I do it myself. Twice a month with clippers. Usually the #1 guard. I'll usually ask a friend or neighbor if they'd check out the back to make sure it's all even and whatnot. If I went bald tomorrow you'd hear no complaining from me...

My girlfriend cuts my hair, about once a month. Never get any bad surprises that way, always looks the same. She hasn't realized yet that I save a lot of money that way, once she does she'll probably want me to take her out for dinner in exchange  Wink

3.5 on the sides and back, bangs cut to about halfway up the forehead, and trim and blend up the top to make it look right.

Same haircut for going on every 2-3 weeks for 4 years now.

I hate it and always have, having scruffy hair annoys me but so does getting it cut. My hair is at it's best when it's about one month after I have had it cut, easy to maintain, not too short and not too long. The only reason I would let it grow is so my natural colours come out, I was a blond but it went brown a few years ago so when it's longer I get a good mix of brown, red and blond.
Unfortunately my hair is really thick so if it gets too long it looks a mess Big grin

I need my hair cut about every 10 days. I usually alternate between doing it myself and having a barber do it. I used to go 3 on top and 2 on the sides but now it's a 2 on top and a 0 on the sides. There's a great barber here in Tempe that only charges like $12 and he does it right.

Roughly once per month. In fact, I'm due for one now.

I cut it myself using the Remington Vacuum Trim:

Before my brain surgery, I'd always sport a flat top (go ahead, say what you will).

For the better part of 10 years, I had a regular guy north of Houston who did a heck of a job. Old timey place - the price you paid is the price when you started going there.

When I moved to Las Vegas - I looked for a place near Nellis AFB -- likely to find someone who really knows how to chop a flat top. Well, I found it! A guy 80 years old - a WWII vet -- did the best flat top I've ever had and a shave with a straight razor.

I got tired of making the 20 mile hike and found another place. Cliff's Wild West Showroom & Barber Corral (Trop & Pecos). I really enjoyed the place - unique to say the least - animal trophies everywhere, old firearms, Native American memorabilia and old west memorabilia. And best of all - no price list. The price is what you feel like paying. I'd always give him a $20 and say "the change is what you feel like giving me back."

Since I came back to Texas, I settled on a place that doubles as a barber shop (their primary business is running numbers). I just get a short crew cut - nothing fancy. Low mx!

High and tight, the way i've had it for the last 17 years. I get mine cut about 1-2 times a month depending on whether or not i'm home. I have one lady who does it, and when i'm out of town, I wait until I come home home to get it cut.

Since I have hair that's out of control -- it grows quickly and there's a hell of a lot of it (none on the back, thank God, but just about everywhere else) I hit up a "concept" salon every 3 weeks to keep it short(er) and relatively even. (Hey, it's four doors down from my office, can't beat the convenience). Cost w/o tip, about $40.

A haircut.... damned good idea actually, usually I go every 3rd week and it is time now. I pay 16 EUR (17 EUR with tip), it is expensive but the girls there do it right, additionally I get a coffee (or soft drink) for free so it is ok.

Since I've been in college I've had my hair buzzed rather than left longer; it's so much easier to maintain and I think I look better with shorter hair, actually. I used to love getting my hair cut, but it's often physically painful now because my hair is so thick and a lot of the stylists like to run the #2 over my head with the force of a carpenter's plane.  headache

Unfortunately, not only is my hair extremely thick, it grows faster than heck. I usually go in for a buzz every 3-4 weeks, as opposed to my friends, who usually wait for a couple of months before getting their ears lowered.

Every third week. Unless I am going on holiday and it is not timed with my regular maintenance schedule then it's a bit early or a bit late or I'll just get it where I'm going - depending on the location.

I've done the hair dresser for years but for the past 2 I've been going to the barber. I love it - it's a culture in it's own right. All the barbers are Lebanese and they are amazing at what they do. #2 on the sides and whatever magic on top.

Cheers!

I haven't had a haircut since August of 2005, when my then-regular barber was apparently getting used to some new medication and I left his shop looking like a very tall 8-year-old boy...the day before I had to go to a very important meeting.
Now I wear a ponytail, and when it gets long enough I'll cut it off and donate it to Locks of Love.

I head down to the stylists at my local mall every few weeks or so, I pay about $35 bucks or so, but I'm happy with their work & it's great eye candy, the place is always full of gorgeous chicks!

when I was a kid, the old man would take me down to the local barber's on a Saturday morning. The place was always packed, and could those old Italian blokes cut hair! Man, were they were quick with the scissors! Mind you, it was a close call with the ears a couple of times.....

Generally get a no.3 on the back and sides every month or so, or when I can be bothered to do. Did have it all shaved off at one point, felt pretty cool but people kept asking me if I was from Sweden, Germany, Finland or Norway!!!

After having very long hair and the high and tight I settled on the almost shoulder length do I have now and find it works the best for me. It is easy to manage and dresses up or down. I pay $35 with tip at a good salon with a long time pro who I have been going to through many stages of hair length and style and 3 different salons. It has actually been something like 14 years with the same stylist and only $10 inflation isn't bad if you ask me. I am so loyal that I refuse to go anywhere else, so cuts end up being about 2.5-3 months apart.

I go to a salon near where I live.... I've been going to the same stylist for several years now, and even followed him when he changed salons. He is the only person who knows how to cut my hair- which is very thick, stick straight, and stubborn. Anyway. I pay $30 for the cut, plus ten dollar tip because i apprectiate his work, esp in light of the dozens of botched haircuts i've had in my life. Plus sometimes $20+ for good hair paste.  Smile Looking good is not cheap. lol. Oh, and I get my hair done every 3-4 weeks.

This topic comes up every now and then and it hits close to home. I'm a longhair, and I cut my hair myself. I cut it one length about chin-length all around. Basically a simple bob. It saves money, and like the original poster, I don't like going to the barber/stylist. Goes back to my childhood.

Then why don't you? Except in the military, longer hair could probably be accepted in most professions, as long as it's well taken care of and isn't till the middle of your back. I keep my hair long till the shoulder (not as long as it sounds), despite the fact that I'm the only one among my colleagues.

What I do miss though, is the long beard that goes with it! Now keeping that would have been great.

I hate having long hair, but also hate getting haircuts, so I go nuts for a while until I finally go get it done. My hair doesn't grow out that fast, but it is very very thick, which can get annoying. It also grows really fast at the back and on my neck, so I have to shave that myself. I usually get my haircut once every month and a half or so (or until I start going insane).

My dad in Canada is a Chiropractor, so my hair dresser is a patient of his, so she does it for free (for my whole family) in exchange for his services. I think to normal customers getting what I get she charges around 20-30 CAD. She is great, and I have been going to her for ages! I have only got my haircut once in Austria, and went to a place in my town. I think the girl was Slovenian, and I think she did a pretty good job (not to mention really fast). It was only 12€ or something like that, so I'll be going back there pretty soon (BUT MUST HOLD OUT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!!!).
