I'm quite happy where I am, but as far as retirement goes. I think I might spend a few weeks in France every year, find a nice place and when I retire, move there.

I really liked both Seattle and Boston when I went to visit them:

Retirement will be in Seward, Alaska . . . .

http://www.sewardak.org/about.htm

http://www.sewardak.org/images/misc/Seward%20map.pdf

About 120 miles south of Anchorage. Easy drive, small town, very low crime, plenty of Halibut fishing. Far enough from Anchorage to skip the BS< but close enough to make the necessary trips to town on occasion.

BOYSTOWN!!!

 Wink

just kidding.

I *LOVE* Chicago and could go there and end up there for a while, but with the business I'm in, I doubt I will ever really be settling anywhere until 20 or 30 years from now. It's quite common to move every 2 to 5 years.

List of places I wouldn't mind stopping off along the way --

Raleigh/Durham area

Seattle

Providence/Hartford/or Boston

Raleigh/Durham is a really nice area. I've got lots of relatives and some great friends down there so I'm in Raleigh all the time. It's just not quite as "happening" as places like NYC/Boston/Chicago. Tons of great business opportunities though.

it's also a good "center" point to explore other parts of that neck of the land.

i've got just about every city covered in the midwest and am pretty familiar with the ins and outs of a lot of places from McCook, Nebraska east to Cleveland, as far north as Minneapolis/St. Paul stretching down to Nashville.

i pretty much cover the midwest now as it is for my job and i have lived in 6 states out here at some point and time.

Well, one day (hopefully not soon) I will inherit my parent's houses in Germany and in Spain, actually a nice location mix IMO (keeps the plane spotter in me alive Big grin ).

But maybe I will sell these houses, buy H from the money, and end up in a drug rehab clinic, who knows?  Wink

I know it posses a high standard of living,

Once my home in Los Angeles gets sold I can get a house in a nice neighborhood thats x2 as big and I can be close to Family in nearby The Bahamas and Dominican Republic.

So it kind of balances out.

rotfl  Unless ou are talking about Star Island, there is no such thing. My parent's place is easily worth $500-650K, and while it USED to be a great neighboorhood, it has gone to hell with people buying houses/property like my parents, demolishing the houses, then building houses that take up almost every inch of the cleared property. It's disgusting to watch houses and yards that you grew up in and played on being replaced by these house only properties. Not to mention a few blocks away, they demolished a whole block that had these nice evenly spaced buildings with 4 two bedroom apartments in each, lots of grass and trees, and replaced it with $900,000 townhomes built one on top of eachoter, and almost no vegetation. If you want to live like that, enjoy.

Carlsbad, CA. I've now been to all but two major metro areas in the U.S., and I like both San Diego and L.A. Carlsbad is nicely situated between San Diego and L.A., with enough of a suburban (slightly rural) feel to keep me from feeling I'm living in crowded space. The beach is about as private as I could tell a public beach could get. A home that overlooks the Pacific would be the best by far.

But I'm not complaining about the Midwest - as long as I can still visit the West Coast Big grin.

I can see myself either back in Milwaukee, where I grew up, here in St. Louis, where I currently go to school (and love it!), or (most realistically) Seattle, if I get a job with BCA eventually. Of course, it's still all up in the air.

I'm enjoying living in Canada so I could see myself in Montréal or maybe Vancouver. I'd like to start saving and buy something somewhere warm for retirement. Victoria doesn't cut it for 'warm' weather.

With the exceptions of (a) the weather and (b) the lack of In-N-Out burger I'm perfectly happy with Cleveland -- it has all of the cultural ammenities I was craving in SoCal suburbia (world class orchestra and art musuem, a thriving theater scene, bars/clubs a pleny) with a much lower cost of living and much nicer people.

I've lived in AZ since August 2005 (summers excluded) and honestly the weather is one of the only things I prefer here to where I am from, the outskirts of Minneapolis.

I want to move back to the Minneapolis area, but I hate city life. I'm the type of person where I'd like to live out in the country with a couple of acres, but still with easy access to the Twin Cities. That way I'm not bored, but I'm not subject to the heavy restrictions imposed by city governments (for example, since I've lived in Tempe, we have a gravel yard and sometimes the grass grows through the gravel, and that's not even allowed regardless of how short the grass is. Not to mention whiny neighbors).

So work and play here:

But live here:

All while being only 25 minutes from downtown St. Paul and just 30 minutes from the airport.

Actually my parents' house is like that, 3 acres out in the country. They are considering moving, but I told them to just wait a couple of years when I'm out of school and I'll buy it from them!

I always get this happy feeling when I'm there. I love being in those two places. I know thats where I want to end up.

See I'm the other way around. I love an urban environment. In fact I am trying to figure out what part of the valley to buy a house in. I'm torn between a house out in Gilbert; along the Baseline Corridor; or a condo in the downtown Tempe area.
