Russian BMW 650i (pics)

Quote:
Volga is known mostly for small Soviet-era sedans used by the KGB and as limos for the communist party central committee members – a little less so for customized German luxury cars. But in a revolution against Western propaganda, the Russian automaker has unveiled its second coachbuilt BMW.

The Volga V8 roadster starts life as a BMW 650i cabriolet before being treated to custom body panels to give the car 60's retro styling in tribute to the (charismatically-named) Volga GA3-21P. Aside from the bodywork, the car's mechanicals seem to carry over from the stock BMW, which is probably a smart move.

The V8 Roadster follows the path of the V12 Coupe, based on the BMW 850 CSi, which was built in 2001 as a throwback to the Volga GA3-219 (with a 9, the roadster has a P).

Not much additional information is available on the cars, unless you're fluent in Russian, but follow the jump to find a full gallery of images.

Volga may be in danger of folding, but not before joining Fisker in crafting an exclusive coachbuilt BMW.

"Thatz str8 mafuckin P...I...M...P"

Really though, that car looks fantastic. However, I have never been a fan of the 6 series interior/dash. I think the 6 series is the only example for when I would take a Merc over a Bimmer.

The rear looks like a Ferrari 250 GT Spyder crossed with an older Rolls convertible, the side looks like a modern Ford Thunderbird, the front looks like a hotrod version of an old Chevy pickup, and the wheels look like they came from a late-90's impala in a rap video. These elements just don't work together for me, particularly the wheels. I think the 6 series in its stock form is vastly more attractive.

This is a single one only built by Pemespiba, a group of car enthusiasts (coachbuilders) in Moscow. It isn't made by GAZ, which is the company which produces the Volga. Also, GA3-21P above should be GAZ-21P - the Russian Z looks like the number 3. And the GAZ Volga line is in no danger of folding as stated above.

I'll vote for the (newer) T-Bird and a vintage Aston Martin ...

As sexy as the 650 is in that first picture, I love that conversion! Not many convertibles look good with the roof up but this is stunning!

I agree

They took a nice looking German car and made it look like a car 40 years older that got chopped and chromed by the next door neighbor's teenager. What a waste of a good car.
