Accepted Into Craniofacial PhD Program At UCSF!

Fri Apr 20, 2007 4:18 am

Hi you all!

For those who have been following my saga at King's College London and my life with a craniofacial syndrome, I have been applying (and interviewing) for PhD programs in craniofacial embryology research. I had interviews a couple of weeks ago in Los Angeles (with USC) and in San Francisco (with UCSF); I travelled all the way from London to California for this.

I was just informed a few minutes ago that UCSF has accepted me into their PhD program for oral & craniofacial sciences.

I am leaning heavily toward accepting their offer (which includes a stipend, tuition assistance, and other PhD funding). However, I will wait for official decisions from all the other schools to which I have applied (King's College London, USC, Utah, etc).

I just wanted to let you all know. I will keep you all updated on whether I accept this offer (very likely) and whatever other offers I get.

Congratulations!

Just kidding!  Smile

Yes, UCSF is a very respected and prestigious medical institution. My ENT is at UCSF and is one of the best ENTs in the nation. I've always have had ear problems since birth.
UCSF also has a beautiful campus and is close to just about everything interesting in San Francisco.

I hope you accept the offer.

Get yourself ready. A PhD is not light matter. I did mine in 4 years (fast-track), and in one year I had only 3 weekends free. It is a lot of hard work, but it pays off.

If you need any help or pointers, feel free to contact me anytime.

Congrats again

P.S: We operated on a rare form of brachiocephaly patient this week. Amazing results with these new reabsorbable micro-plates for the fusion osteosynthesis!  bigthumbsup

How long is this program?

In the USA, a PhD normally runs for 5 years on average. It starts in the fall (Sept. or Oct.).

In the first two years, you do 3 lab rotations (to find a lab in which you best fit) and some taught coursework. Then, at the end of the 2nd year, you take a qualifying exam (basically bashing out a project proposal for your research). Passing that, you start on your chosen major project in the 3rd year.

They told me at UCSF, that since I already have a strong developmental biology and craniofacial sciences background (from my education at King's College London), I could skip most of the taught coursework and start sooner on lab work, possibly as early as this July.

My support will include an annual stipend (salary) at a standard level for UCSF students (I don't know the exact amout for the salary though); more information will be sent to me about registration, the support funding, etc. I may also find out about housing options for students. One guy at UCSF told me there is housing near the Parnassus Street campus (UCSF Medical Center).

Your classes, clinics as well as many great places to eat, drink, Golden Gate Park, Haight street, Cole Valley, you name it and the MUNI subway line runs just one block over from Parnassus. They connects you to downtown, BART and everywhere else. That is definately one of the more desirable parts of the city.

Try to get in to the Aldea housing complex. For years, I lived 2 blocks from there.
That has to be the nicest university housing complex I have ever seen. It's hidden atop of Mt. Sutro in the woods just up the hill from campus. Feels like you are far away in the woods somewhere far away from a big city. Hard to believe its in the geographic center of one of the most densely populated cities in the USA. The facilities are nice too.
Parnassus is good because it's located at the main university. Mission Bay is across town near the PacBell/SBC/AT&T/MCI/Verison/Nextel/Nokia/SouthernBell/AmeriTech/Sprint/GTE Baseball park where the Giants play.

Actually now it's AT&T Park! I was there April 4, on the second night of the Giants' opening-week series against the Padres. The Giants got trounced 5-3. As a 12-year-old rugrat behind me so eloquently and loudly griped, "They Friggin' SUCK!" I had to laugh at his antics, which went on throughout the whole game! Fans can be so much fun to watch!

As soon as my term at King's ends in early June, I plan to head home to Fort Wayne, IN. I really need to get ready to pack up and move over to San Francisco; the people at UCSF are talking about asking me to come out there in July and start my lab work, if the grant money would start then.

Anyway, I look forward to whenever we can meet sometime--maybe at one of those infamous A.net meets!

I took the MCAT, worked, and researched but it seems like no med school is interested in me.

I went down that same road as you, back in 1999-2002! I shadowed doctors for a whole summer, I applied to medical schools all over the USA, Ireland, and England, and took the MCAT twice, but no dice! I even interviewed at Indiana University School of Medicine twice. At IUSM, an admissions tutor told me that I would not be able to care for patients--because of my challenges (hearing, speech, etc) secondary to my craniofacial disorder. I didn't give up; I kept trying. Medical school, in the US or other Western country, is very hard to get into, even for those with 4.00 GPAs, perfect MCATs, etc.

It was like this until 2003, when King's College London offered me a place, and I entered in 2004. While in London, my opportunities and events turned me towards aiming for a PhD instead. In London I've had the opportunity to do research in my chosen field, craniofacial deformities, and even published my first paper this year. King's College London (Guy's Hospital) has a world-renowned craniofacial research department, where I'm at right now.

So, looking back on my struggles to get into medical school way back then, it turned out for the better for me in a very unexpected way.

So don't give up on your medical school applications, if you really want to be a pediatrician. What field of study have you been in most recently? Do you have a Plan B? If not, do you have a careers counselor or some similar type of person to talk to about planning your career goals in case the Plan A doesn't work?

btw will you still be able to attend the ZRH meet ?

Yes, I still plan to attend the ZRH meet! I have a night reserved at the Ibis airport hotel. I haven't booked my flight yet--because I don't quite know when the exam finishes on the 1st of June.

(First of all, what I will say next in no way is meant to insult anyone)

The only difference between a winner and a loser is that a winner never quits.

Good job, Smiths!

Quoting SmithAir747 (Reply 46):
So don't give up on your medical school applications, if you really want to be a pediatrician. What field of study have you been in most recently? Do you have a Plan B?

Thanks for the encouragement. . .it really means a lot to me.  Smile I'm actually a behavior consultant for autistic children at a company based in Sacramento, Ca. Aside my job, I am also a research assistant at UC Davis Health System M.I.N.D. Institute studying sleep patterns of autistic children. Yes. I know right now my job/research are all related to autism but that's another strong point I think would convince the interviewer that I have the capability to care for children even if they have developmental disorders.

Plan B? I thought about it and clinical psychology sounds relevent and that by being a psychologist, I can still help people. . .just in a different way.

Seriously though, thanks for the encouragement. I do hope my future is bright. By the way, I can't say it enough, congratulations on your accomplishment!  Smile
