Bonking At The Gym

Fri Apr 20, 2007 5:05 am

WTF? Diamond, are you out there?

Over the last month, I've been doing 45 minutes of cardio (elliptical machine) 6 evenings per week. During that span, I've managed to increase the indicated distance traveled from 4 miles to 5.5 miles, and my indicated calorie burn from about 700 to over 800.

I took a rest day yesterday, went in today, and I couldn't even do 4 miles. I was actually dizzy from the effort when I dismounted. The difference between my Tuesday preformance and today's was perplexingly dramatic.

Could it be nutrition? I've been eating a more-or-less standard diet of a bowl of unflavored oatmeal for breakfast, a supermarket sushi combo or small turkey sub for lunch, and a grilled chicken breast and garden salad for dinner. Today I got stuck on the road, so I had a Dunkin Donuts bagel with cream cheese for breakfast and a Wendy's double combo for lunch. Could one day of shitty eating make that much of a difference?

Not necessarily. I thought exactly the same thing Banco did. Maybe it's my inner Brit.

has long been a colloquial term, slightly jocular in its connotation, meaning sexual intercourse, but has recently become more commonly used as a jargon term by endurance athletes, primarily cyclists and long-distance runners, to describe a condition when the athlete suddenly loses energy and fatigue sets in, usually caused when glycogen stores in the liver and muscles are depleted, resulting in a major performance drop.

I doubt its diet.

Sounds like you might be overtraining (i dont know what your current fitness is like). From wikipedia:

Overtraining occurs when the volume and intensity of an individual's exercise exceeds their recovery capacity. They cease making progress, and can even begin to lose strength and fitness. Overtraining is a common problem in weight training, but it can also be experienced by runners and other athletes.

I do a lot of running and get this too. Take a few days rest and you might find youll be doing better than you where even before you had this bad day.

haha....i thought u meant something totally different with the thread title. Your cardio routine seems similar to mine minus 3 days, althought i'm trying to do more per week. The human body can be unpredictable sometimes. but if your body is use to certain nutrients and then you suddenly infuse it with crap, it could have very well affected you energy level. IMO

Here.

"Bonking" usually refers to glycogen as mentioned above. But glucose is most likely the problem - and is broader in scope.

Based on the foods you ate (cement mix) you put a heavy amount of starch into your system which metabolizes as pure glucose. Your body responds to that with a big dose of insulin which has a sedating effect.

A bagel and cream cheese? A double-burger? Yikes! That stuff will be in your colon 2 years from now!

The last photo I saw of you in the most recent self-pic thread - you looked leaner than in the past. There's good news and bad news with that. The good news is that you look good. The bad news is that your body is now more susceptable to glucose and insulin rushes.

I forgot to mention this above: If your combo meal included a soft drink with sugar ... I'm positive you were experiencing insulin sedation. (even if there was no soft drink, I'm still pretty sure that's what it was).

Chalk another one up to the less innocent meaning of "bonking".

Anyway, I had this the other day at the gym myself. I was simply following my normal cardio regime, nothing different. But about 2/3rds the way though I was feeling a tightening in my lungs, it was harder to keep my breath, etc. It felt the same as when I used to run when I was really out of shape. However, it was just that one day and I was feeling fine again the next time I went back.

I'm sure having a Hefeweisen Stout combo in his "water" bottle didn't help the situation either.

hmmm lol you get a sudden loss of energy after you've been doing the "other" type of bonking also! Big grin Then again if you are into quite physical sex it can be a very good workout! (standing up sex is like doing lots of squats for example).

I have never heard of bonking describing endurance exercise however, interesting tho!

I read it the same way too.

You know the story is that old Joe Gold tossed that "Body by Jake" guy out of his gym from "Bonking" weights.

So maybe you are in good company.

I gotta be honest, I was afraid to open this thread and read about something that happened in the steam room. You just knew either I or Doug (or both) would see this one.

I have to admit that I took one look at this thread title and assumed that someone had been to my local gym - I swear that somedays there is more cardiovascular activity in the steam room than there is out on the exercise floor - and definitely not the sort of bonking that results from a performance drop .
