Michael Vick Gives $10K To VaTech Families

Fri Apr 20, 2007 7:31 am

Good move.

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has teamed up with the United Way to donate $10,000 to assist families affected by the massacre at Virginia Tech, his former school.

Vick's foundation said the money will be used to provide help with funeral expenses, transportation for family members and other support services.

Move?

That sounds like a calculated thought to gain strength in a game.

I'd call it straight from the heart, and repaying the school and its people, who gave himself so much opportunity.

I'd call it just being a great human being.

I, however, wouldn't call it a "move."

Nice, sure, but I would hardly consider this news-worthy for someone who makes around $10 million/year.

Okay.

Class act.
Nice thing to do.
Kind thought.

I didn't mean to imply that it was a PR stunt or anything.

$10K on his salary, it was probably PR.

Can't someone just do something nice without it being suspect?

He didn't have to give anything.

You're right on both counts. If other professional players and successfully business people that are alums of Virginia Tech stepped up to the plate, then a significant amount of $$ can be raised for emergency assistance. (Perhaps they have already donated, but are staying out of the press)

This is true, however, he has asked the United Way to disburse the funds in the community, and I bet they were the ones to issue the press announcement.

Not that he couldn't have stopped them, but perhaps he thought lending his name would encouraged others celebrities/athletes to join the effort. (Like Ted Turner did with the UN donation.)

Edit: Actually, yes to that last point:

The Vick Foundation is collecting donations from local communities in both Atlanta and Virginia that will be placed in the United In Caring Fund for Victims of the VA Tech Tragedy and the special fund at the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd counties, which serves the Virginia Tech area. (from the ajc article)

Kinda makes it hard to be anonymous then if your foundation is collecting donations.

Understood. I just think in times like this, no one's making a "move." That was a bad choice of words on your part. Reading what you've said since your initial posting, however, show's your respect for Vick, VT, and the hurting families.

I know to some, it might seem like a drop in the bucket to those that are rich, but $10K is nothing to laugh at, and I really think that Vick's donation is going to start a big thing here... and good for him. Let's see other VT grads who've made it big in the pros do the same...

And let's not limit this to VT grads... the Barber Twins graduated from UVA, Tiki and Ronde, both grew up in Roanoke. I'd BET they've already contributed, but it just hasn't hit the "wires" yet..

I didn't read the article because I didn't want to register..knew about his foundation..but if his foundation is collecting donations then he really isn't donating but the community is. (Personally, I hate it when a big corporation request you donate to the cause of the week, then package it like "XYZ corp is donating $100m to the Cause" ).

Well, I don't know the details, but the article implied that he got the ball rolling (no pun intended) with his initial $10K.

This event has moved a lot of people and I think there are a lot of folks who just want to help in some way--even with the various memorials across the country and stuff.

It's too bad it takes a tragedy like this or 9.11 to bring folks together.

Is it 10K per family or $10,000 all together? If its 10K for everyone to share, its only $312 per family.

His intentions are what matters. Remember, every little bit helps when it comes to a significant tragedy. $10,000 is $10,000 more than they had in the fund before hand
